I just add printers to the Mac server and then use Netputing » handyPrint v5 (have to be logged in for it to work) Depends what sort of restrictions you want to put in place on printing though I suppose.

Just to be absolutely sure, how long are you/they waiting? It's the same with all our macs for a period of time when they're switched on/rebooted

And the red light never goes away? Before we get into something more complicated I'm thinking this is simply the mac going to sleep. When it goes to sleep and is woken it takes 30s or so before you can log onto a network account

Could you be a bit more specific when you say "won't allow"? Taking a guess though, do you get the below at the login screen?

Only odd issue was that it was indexing a (AD) users files, got to the end and then promptly started all over again. If I remember software update worked, or at least it told me it was looking for updates on my mac server. These are all past tense as I only had time to test one (10.9.1) machine. My Mac is 10.9.2 though, while I avoid other work, I'll enrol my machine and see what happens. Could be, if you alt+click on the wifi icon in the menu bar you can see the strength on the connection. Also, spotlight indexes files when they log on so could be that but seems surprising it would make much of a difference.

Glad it worked. For what it's worth I use profile manager to bind my machines to the AD Need to upgrade to Mavericks to get the finer control OS X Mavericks: Using advanced Active Directory options in a configuration profile It's all working at the moment though so I'm not touching it

Just as I was doing this today, the manual alternative is to use (Apple) Remote Desktop. Select all machines. Manage->Send Unix Command. diskutil repairPermissions / (or use the template)->Send Once it's in your history you can just click retry. It tells you if it succeeds or not

I know that feeling well. What do you see for that/a user in the Directory Utility? More specifically the home folder location

Oh, ok I think I read that as more complicated that it needed to be. Perhaps a simple shared folder that's in everyone's Finder? Doesn't force everyone to save there though. I've gotten people to navigate to the shared folder and then add it to their sidebar "cmd+t". Has to be a folder within the initial share (if that makes sense). Nothing fancy, will see if I can add the "add to sidebar" to it set MyName to do shell script "whoami" tell application "Finder" mount volume "smb://Server/Share" & MyName & ";" & MyName & ":password" end tell This won't change the default save location. How do you have the home folder location set for the AD/Windows?

Can you see the computer in the AD? Try deleting it and adding again

Drawn in by the fun topic title no doubt, I'm looking for a bit of guidance. I have a mixed Win/Mac environment and having problems with home folder redirection on the Mac machines. Pretty sure they problem lies on the Windows (Server 2008 R2) AD side. A few users work, and as far as I can tell because they have the SMBHome attribute. The rest don't work and don't have that. I see no obvious connection between them. Getting a little help from Apple and they want me to check/do this OS X, OS X Server: Active Directory attributes required to be accessible to OS X computer account objects I don't know how though. Hopefully than wasn't too light on details. Any pointers?

Sounds like what I ended up doing. Didn't seem to work when I gave the teachers group remote access. Oh well

At my computer I use Apple Remote Desktop (save me walking around) and I'd like to give teachers access to it from one machine. I've installed it but not sure what the best way to give them the necessary acces is. Wondering if anyone has done it?

And on that page (the enrolment profile) does it show any devices on the usage? On the machine you're trying to enrol, in System Preferences, Profiles What profiles do you see there? Is the trust profile ""verified" In the Server.app does profile manager look like this

I meant this bit Did you create an enrolment profile? Lets assume yes, do you have "restrict use to the devices in this library" ticked? On the My Devices page, you need to go to the Profiles, and install the Trust Profile on a machine first and then the Enrolment Profile.

Fun times ahead. Did you create an enrolment profiles in Profile Manager? If you did does it show anything in the Usage tab?

Yes. Our print server is 2008. I'm using profile manager to manage printers though so perhaps things are a little different

Am on 10.7 but hopefully the directory utility is pretty similar. I have it working (most of the time) like you're trying. On the local machine make sure "Force local home directory on startup disk" is unticked

Are they mobile accounts? Why you look in /Library/Managed Preferences do you see all the preferences there? There will likely be user (in their username folder) and computer preferences
