+1 for Hiren's Been using it for years. Active password changer is one of the best things on there... Stick portable apps on there (recuva is another great app from Pirisoft) and you're good to go.

As @Griff said, its likely to be proxy related. Check internet settings on the workstation and make sure Bypass proxy server for local addresses is ticked Try using the IP address of the server instead of the server name. e.g. http://192.168.1.100:9675/portal (or whatever your server IP address is) If you're still not getting anywhere, check you can ping the server from the command prompt on the staff workstation.

You usually have to specify the port in the shortcut. The default is 9675, unless you've changed it. e.g. http://servername:9675/portal Is it running as a service on the server? Right-click on the Spiceworks icon in the systray on the server to check. There's a whole load of other possible reasons but without more specific info, its hard to give more help.

No, you don't need to do any coding. Its all configured in the Powerchute software. I haven't done it for a while, and it will vary slightly depending on the version of Powerchute you have, but there is help for the Business edition here: Frequently Asked Questions

+1 for APC and powerchute. From experience, APC UPS are the best and well worth the money. Any decent UPS *should* come with software that is able to send an email alert though. Have you checked the software that came with your UPS?

We have a Dynadock in school and it works very well. I can confirm that it installs as a display adaptor, network device, and audio device. You can then decide whether to clone the desktop on the laptop display and the dynadock VGA/HDMI output or extend across both. We use this with a Fujitsu laptop running Win 7 Pro 64. Its used by the school business manager so not for heavy video use, but I've tested it with iPlayer and youtube and not had any issues.

I've never read it. I tend to empty my pigeon hole once a month and 99% of it goes straight in the bin (apart from my payslip!) so I may have seen it before but I wouldn't remember. Online all the way for me. I try and read a cross section of the tech review sites, and don't rely on just one as I don't believe any are 100% impartial.

You could use Skydrive or dropbox, or even a USB stcik as a temporary alternative. As an aside - If she's off sick, why is she using her laptop?

I can recommend @VeryPC. They worked with us on to design and build our new website which has been live since July last year. We started with some pretty out there ideas, with input from many people in school - including some conlicting ideas from SLT. They were very patient with us, and knew what would work and what wouldn't from a web technology point of view. The final design is amazing. There are some really good things that 8.1 does. Sadly, at least for me, these are way overshadowed by the rediculous way MS tried to make a one size fits all, touch enabled OS. This has resulted in a really poor user experience for anyone not using it on a touch enabled device. We're concentrating on getting rid of the final Windows XP machines and getting to 100% Windows 7.

@zag do you use a GBIC fibre module with any of your netgear switches? I'm having an issue getting mine to accept the GBIC module is present.
