  1. Capita just reinstalled Solus on the SIMS server - only took them about 10 minutes and it was all sorted.
  2. I've managed to get SIMS working on the server I wanted by copying the SIMS folder from another machine and copying teh sims.ini file. Did not expect that to work - but it did. Call to Captia about the deployment service on Monday...
  3. I've restarted and it make no difference. Logs show for the failed deployment service startup: Service cannot be started. System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Sims.Solus3.Common.LoggingHelper, Version=3.11.61.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. File name: 'Sims.Solus3.Common.LoggingHelper, Version=3.11.61.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' at Sims.Solus3.DeploymentServer.DeploymentService.ServiceManager.Start() at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.ServiceQueuedMainCallback(Object state) WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF. To enable assembly bind failure logging, set the registry value [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fusion!EnableLog] (DWORD) to 1. Note: There is some performance penalty associated with assembly bind failure logging. To turn this feature off, remove the registry value [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fusion!EnableLog]. Any ideas?
  4. Hi, Hope someone can help. We had a long power outage last night and our SIMS server went down. Started back up OK and SIMS itself is working fine. I can fire up SOLUS on the SIMS server - but the solus3 deployment service will not start in the server - if I try and manually start it it fails. Any thoughts on how to fix this? I need SIMS install on a server for Monday AM - is there a manual alternative to using SOLUS for a on off? I can call Capita on Monday - but would like SIMS on this otherr server before then. Many thanks, Roger
  5. Many places use G Suite for Education. Its straightforward to setup and easy to manage (we have used it for around 7 years). The basic google instructions can be found at https://support.google.com/a/answer/2856827?hl=en
  6. My advice would be to do one or the other - but not both. Having everyone doing stuff the same way is very helpful. For what its worth, we have used G Suite for about 7 years now and run mainly ChromeOS (1:1 with students). Could not imagine switching to something else now. Gmail + Groups for Business is very powerful and I'm very glad I never have to deal with Outlook - or any other local mail client.
  7. Its around £4 a student per year - but you can get multi-year discounts. We use it alongside Classroom - the Highlights part is very good for managing student Chromebooks as we are 1:1.
  8. I use to give teacher password change rights on the Student OU - but for the past few years we have used Hapara Teacher Dashboard and that allows them to change the password (and many many other things).
  9. Don't know. I'll take a look at our old macs that run it tomorrow and see. Don't see why not.
  10. Policy is there now - seems to work on any version of ChromeOS as far as I can see.
  11. Get the user to go to https://chrome.google.com/sync - hit the reset button at the bottom of the page. Seen this a few times.
  12. I normally just put a letter of something in - so equals x or the like. But as far as I can see that should work. The G+ community is a good resource https://plus.google.com/communities/104966983745456719075?hl=en-GB
  13. Formmule: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/formmule-email-merge-util/kabhamaiihmaphgpijdolgcihofefajn?hl=en Their site: formMule - CloudLab Tutorial vid:
  14. Its one of the features coming towards the end of this year - along with the migration tool to convert classic to new sites. Our staff is in classic sites - will die once this feature comes online.
  15. The Lenovo Yoga N23 is also worth a look. Got a demo unit it and its pretty good + a lot cheaper than the HP - although no second camera. Might be a possibility for our new Y7's (instead or the Acer R11's that the rest have got).
  16. As the user - go to groups.google.com and check the delivery options for the group. They may have it set to "no emails". Also check they have not got any email filters setup.
  17. We just use an external url link to a public Drive folder. Admin team just periodically dump pdfs into the folder.
  18. 4G router (if you have 4G coverage)? Maybe something like Proroute H820 LTE 4G Router
  19. Yes - in the Formmule settings, you can set the merge to run on conditions - so may a Y in a given column to indicate something has been done. You can also set it to run on a schedule rather than on form submit, if someone needs to do something manually to the data. I normally use it with CopyDown which allows most data processing to be automated.
  20. In groups.google.com - click manage on the specific group. The basic permissions. You can get there on the admin console by client clicking on view in group services. Or set the permissions via command line in GAM.
  21. The Formmule add-on will do this. Can be used with the Copydown add-on if you want to process the data first. If you want to dump the data into a doc and then share it with people, Autocrat does the job. These three add-ons automate a lot of our stuff.
  22. YouTube is outside of G Suite (Free and paid for Business/Enterprise) - so not covered by your agreement. However, it does work and our staff can approved videos and students get restricted. The absence of the blue bar is normally when on a PC the teacher has not signed into YouTube with their G Suite account (happens automatically on ChromeOS). So I'd check that first - might be obvious - but the only thing I've seen that can fox people. If its not that, make sure the teachers are in a OU thats has the correct policy applied - I do it via the permissions section - so the OU the teachers are in get restricted. If you just use the verified classroom teachers method - make sure the teachers are actually in the classroom teachers group - if they are not, they won't be able to approve videos.
  23. Tried last week and the Database upgrade failed. Rolled back to Spring - but the Summer update is needed for exams. Had to supply a copy of our database to Capita - they are still working on the problem a week later.... They say that doind a database only upgrade first is not advised and the patch mentioned is not applicable to us - so I've got no option but to wait for a fix.
  24. We still have some Windows clients - so in Media and Music for eg - but better cloud alternatives are becoming popular. Now that Android Apps are here - there are loads more options. Most of our Windows PCs are just used for Chrome most of the time. Staff can use Ericom AccessNow to do SIMS on a Chromebook. ChromeOS devices have gone to a 6 year cycle - however, we now have devices beyond this that still work fine and get updates - Samsung series 5's.
  25. They have devices that work all the time and they login in seconds - zero hassle - ChromeOS. They can access their stuff anywhere and on any device - "Everyone Learning Everywhere" is our 1:1 strapline. Seamless collaboration and working independent of where you are or what you are on. Classroom - simple collaboration - student -teacher - parents. Unlimited storage. Unlimited versioning of files. Everything archived in Vault. Moving to G Suite (now many years ago) and being largely cloud based has had a massively positive impact on all aspects of the school. Going back to a "tranditional" setup would feel very alien and limiting now.
