Hope it works out, unfortunately and belatedly the more tools you run the less chance you have of recovery, each tool does read/writes and alters the structure of the data. Best bet as above is to take a raw image of the drive then work on copies of that. Tools like chkdsk can just as easily mow over the data as recover it. Best to try and run undelete/recovery on the raw image first then wipe any viruses that remain (use Linux or well protected, isolated windows box). System-tools - SystemRescueCd with ddrescue, photorec and testdisk are probably worth a shot in future cases.

I use virtualbox or even hyper-v, I just don't trust Linux on non-exact-Linux-approved hardware. I have had it hash its own file system so many times after a powercut or crash thanks to shoddy old school laptop drivers or just plain randomness. Queue the Linux brigade to berate me over my experience but it stands. In a VM it is contained and quite well behaved, ESXi is also a nice Linux derivative but again on the right hardware.

Have an XB1, have played on both, still like the UI and online bot of the XB1 better as despite improvements the PS online stuff is still inferior. The server count thing is rubbish, they backend it to azure and have as many or as few servers as they need at the time. Graphics may be slightly better on the PS4 but I like the Kinect sensor and the controller on the XB1 more hence why I brought one. Both next gen consoles still have their issues so neither is faultless and it comes down to what you want out of it and what your friends have.

Sure, all printers regardless of brand are terrible problematic devices in comparison to almost all other computer gear. Brother make decent cheap laser printers that work well for their intended life span which is not that long. Brother printers have all in my experience had terrible drivers, some with memory leaks so bad they could take down a server that was running their drivers. All printer vendors are also guilty of shipping at least one horrible driver for their printers, you want to make sure you get a trial unit to test and make sure the drivers deploy, aren't 150MB (Xerox) and don't crash the printserver every two days as above.

I like the new backgrounds, the uber quick install and the new/old start menu hybrid, actually having GPOs for it will be great to and when they do a release it will not come with any overly intrusive monitoring gadgets. Lets hope they keep on the track through as I found the 7 beta even with all the debug tools switched on to be far faster than the RTM, same with Vista. Both add rep but the thanks in increments of five and the rep in increments of whatever your rep power is, it is not really the number but the acknowledgment, totally fine if people are new to the forum and have not found the button yet or it is not available in the forum but in the grand scheme of things a thanked post of a rep is a lasting acknowledgment of being helpful. Any acknowledgement (including a posted thanks) is great but it is nice top get some response if you are helpful instead of a cloudy non-determinate haze from the ether of the internet. Acknowledgment also quantifies the usefulness a bit so helps other users that may find themselves in the same situation.

AS altruistic as this site is a little acknowledgment goes a long way, a click on the thanks button costs nothing and can help the contributors feel more valued and more likely to help in future.
