SSL Certificate Domain Verification
pbad replied to pbad's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
The SMTP server belongs to Link2ICT and only allows relay messages to be sent on the BGFL network only. -
I need to create an alias account for domain verification for the SSL Certificate. I am trying to use gmail to create the alias, however the SMTP server address does not require any authentication and gmail does not allow me to proceed without and username. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm just running the reg files before creating my base Windows 10 image.
-
I've run the registry files (x86 and x64) to remove these folders from the "This PC" in explorer. However when Windows 10 LTSB 1607 installs some updates then the folders reappear. Anyway to permanently remove these folders?

I tried MPC-HC and this works fine. The Toy Story DVD plays straightaway.
-
I have installed VLC Media Player (v3.0.1) and made VLC Media Player as the default player for all audio and video formats. When playing a Disney DVD (Toy Story) VLC Media Player takes a while before playing the DVD. You can hear the DVD being accessed and see the light on the DVD Writer, reading the DVD, but VLC Media Player will show a blank screen for about 1 minute until VLC Media Player decides to play the DVD. I have tested this on a Windows 7 PC with VLC Media Player installed and it does the same as above. If I play another DVD that is not a Disney DVD, the DVD loads straightaway on VLC Media Player on both Windows 7 and Windows 10. If I also play the Disney DVD on Windows 7 through Windows Media Player 11, the DVD loads straightaway. Can anyone else confirm they are having this issue? Can anyone offer any other free alternatives to VLC Media Player?

IT Technician Role relating to GDPR
pbad replied to pbad's topic in Data Protection & Information Handling
So far I have only been asked by SLT to give each Teacher an Encrypted USB Flash Drive to save any school data on them e.g. reports, lesson plans, Assessments etc.. Each Teacher has signed for the USB Flash Drive and I have made it clear that I will not be able to recover the data if the Teacher forgets the password to the USB flash drive. Some Teachers have a Teacher laptop provided to them by the School and these laptops don’t have any encryption on them. The laptops do have Sophos antivirus installed on them and are password protected by the Teacher. For sensitive data the school has been asked to use egress switch to send data to Birmingham City Council, which is mainly used by SLT. @Liam The School doesn’t have a DPO yet, so I’m trying to cover my back in case something happens and the blame finger is pointed at me. -
I know that GDPR is a minefield, but can anyone simplify what my role as an IT Tech is relating to GDPR? Do I just have to make sure staff are:- Using Encrypted USB Flash Drives Using Encrypted School laptops Computers are automatically locked after timeout Stronger password polices?

I’m now having problems with Windows 10 x64 LTSB 2016 and Promethean Actiview v322 Visualisers. I thought the problem had been fixed with Windows 10, but I am now getting the same problems that I had with Windows 7. Does anybody have a Promethean Actiview v322 that they can test on Windows 10? I'm losing the will to live here as I have the Head of English on my case as to why the Activiews are not being used in the classroom.

Windows 8 & 10 File Explorer Ribbon Customizer (ADM Template)
pbad replied to jacobjb's topic in Windows 10
Just added this now on Windows 10 x64 1607 LTSB. Works great! I can't believe Microsoft haven't thought of this. Absolutely useless software company.- 37 replies

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I also have some concerns about GDPR. I have a “feeling” that the school will expect me to manage the GDPR in the school as anything IT related get pushed in my direction even when staff have gone ahead and ordered the software/hardware, without me looking at it first. Also I don’t think the school will be purchasing any software or hiring any DPO as the school is very tight on funds. I haven’t heard anything from SMT about what they are doing to be prepared for GDPR and I fully expect all this to fall on my head when GDPR comes into effect.

Yes, they have. Thank you very much!

Second class will be fine. Thank you.

@Pottsey, Witch and Accura2k7 have very kindly offered to send my school some spare activpens. Thanks to Witch and Accura2k7, I have enough for now as I have also advised the Teachers to be more mindful and take care of their existing activpens.

I'm just wandering is there still a need to use ctrl+alt+del to login in a School environment. It just seems so outdated now as most devices that children start using at a young age are unlocked using a swipe gesture. I have the "Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to log on" setting enabled on all Windows 7 clients, but I don't know whether to have the setting enabled on my Windows 10 clients? Any opinions or suggestions are welcomed.
-
Sounds like I owe @witch and @Accura2k7 a coffee each for sending me their spare activpens!
-
These pens are for the activboard 378 pro. Unfortunately these pens do not work on the old activboards. Thanks for trying to help though, most appreciated. I have PM'ed @witch and @Accura2k7 and have taken their offers for the activpens.
-
Unfortunately the school doesn't have the money to upgrade to Interactive touchscreen boards and we have 17 old promethean boards with projectors. School is more concerned with saving money than spending it on upgrading outdated IT equipment.
-
Thats extortion £39.99 for 1 Activpen. Are there any other cheaper pens that will work with the old Promethean boards?
-
Where can I order replacement activpens for the old Promethean boards? It seems that every Promethean reseller is unable to get a hold of the activpens. I have attached an image of the Activpens I'm trying to buy.

I'm looking to upgrade to the latest version of ePortal v17.1.19 to resolve this register problem. However the current version of the Facility Controller is v17.1.29.0 (UK). Do I need to install the Facility Controller component from the ePortal v17.1.19 installation as it appears that the Facility Controller is already the latest version?

I thought I'd just update this thread. I'm still having problems getting the actiview to work consistently. I installed the actiview software on Windows 7 32bit and Windows 7 64bit and I still get the same problems. I then installed the actiview software on Windows 10 x64 Education and the actiview worked straightaway without any problems. There definitely seems to be some USB software problems with Windows 7 and skylake chipsets.

The previous Office Manager didn't want to move to Progresso and I think the new Office Manager is happy using Facility CMIS. After more digging... Curriculum server (running Windows Server 2008 R2) will be 5 years old in Nov 2017 and warranty expires May 2019. Admin Server (running Windows Server 2008 SP2) warranty expires May 2018. I suppose the cheapest option is to extend the warranty on both servers and upgrade the Windows Server OS on the admin server. Not sure if upgrading the Windows Server OS on the domain controller is a good idea? Maybe better buying a new domain controller?
-
The School is a Primary School and we have 2 physical servers. 1x Admin Server and 1x Curriculum Server (Domain Controller). After doing some digging the Admin Server is nearly 7 years old. Cost was about £3,500 for the Admin Server, Installation and Configuration by LINK2ICT Service Birmingham back in 2011.
-
The School's admin server is running Windows Server 2008 SP2 and I am trying to find out if Windows Server 2008 SP2 is end of life? If Windows Server 2008 SP2 is end of life then does the School need a brand new admin server with the latest Windows Server Operating System? I mean there's nothing wrong with the Server (touch wood!) and the School has extended the warranty on the Server to cover for hardware failure. The admin server is only used for Facility CMIS, Facility ePortal and storing the documents for SLT and the office staff.
