Hi Matt. 1 - When you sign up for InTouch they send you a document, which includes a patch. This patch automatically ensures each contact (staff, student or parent) email/mobile number is set to primary. The exact wording is as follows; Intouch tries to determine which contact is best to make the Intouch contact. So if they are priority 1 and have an email address and mobile number (correctly formatted) in their record, they will become the intouch contact. It fills a tick box in their contact record which can be manually changed. I guess the idea is that your P1 contact may not want texts / emails, but does want their mobile number on file in case of emergency. Or Mum wants to be called first if little Johnny is ill, but dad likes the emails and texts. 2 - I don't think Intouch can translate messages - you could set up custom groups to contact and custom templates in different languages though. It'd be nice if I was wrong though - anyone?

I've copied essentially what simperm.bat does into a GPO which is assigned to staff. Our workstation upgrades go through fine. PM me if you want a copy of the gpo.

That sounds like a great solution - perhaps a bit of a marketing campaign with your schools is in order?

I use the dude. I monitor the port on my core switch which connects to my internet connection via sntp. This gives a simple graph of the throughput of that port (and your net connection). I have it on my screen all day everyday - meaning I'm usually one of the first to see an issue. Ping results probably wont give you what you want - I think you need a graph of your bandwidth which the dude can give you, as well as many of the other products mentioned. If you're already using the dude it's quick and easy to try.

A mailing went out to schools last week. The long and the short of it is infobase is rapidy being rebuilt on sharepoint (Office365). Testing to start in late Feb - Live by April 1st! They plan to run some training in March and April to show people the new service. @themightymrp I'll PM you an email address of someone who can ensure you're added into future mailings. I believe the council are having lots of trouble with EFT too. They have extended their licence for AVCO until September, and are going to move the servers out of the current LLN datacentre, so they can open up avco to all Leeds schools.

If I understand your problem correctly it may be due to the fact that google would prefer your search to be encrypted. Your connection to google over https can't be inspected like a connection over http. Filters can only see where the certificate is issued from (in this case google) but can't see what the packet includes (the search terms). So google is allowed in your filter, and the search can happen. Google have created the nosslsearch.google.com subdomain, which with a bit of DNS trickery can ensure your users do not search over SSL - resulting in a correctly filtered set of results. I'm genuinely pleased that you're pleased. My worry for those schools that stuck by the council would be continued poor service and a long contract. Long may your happiness continue. One of the schools we support have gone this way - they're not live yet but communication has been poor up to now. Have you looked at the smoothwall VPN rather than logmein? Surely as SW is ICT4Leeds approved product this should be easier to convince them of it's worth? We're in a very similar position (as you probably know!). We are keeping a few users on our LLN connection for two reasons. Get some value out of the SLA we've already paid, and defer the cost of vasco tokens & infobase account (Oh, have you all heard infobase is being replaced now before April?) for as long as we can.

I'd probably be looking at web hosting companies that will also host your email. There must be thousands in the uk - but I use Vidahost.

Lightspeed isn't a firewall though, simply just a filter. We use Lightspeed and Fortinet at the moment. Fortinet has filtering within it, but it's one of those things it also does, it's not it's best feature to be honest. Fortinet firewalls are pretty robust, and they have a decent VPN solution too.

If you have managed switches you should be able to monitor the port which connects to your edge router using sntp and 'the dude'. You can then keep an eye on the graph it produces to see your utilisation. If you give us an estimate on the size of school, I'm sure @SchoolsBroadband could give you an idea on the average they see from customers of a similar size. The only reason why I asked is because some providers will adapt your connection to fit your requirements and budget. We've just moved broadband as I said. New phones coming in the next few weeks too.

It doesn't seem quite right. Have you checked all your wiring? It would be odd that the BT speed test gives a bad result on their product. Try different speed tests at different times of day.

We too recently moved from our LEA supplier. @Gongalong Do you know what kind of bandwidth you are using at the moment? I set up a 'The Dude' install to keep an eye on my router well before moving suppliers. We've got a 100/100Mbps fibre through @SchoolsBroadband now, and typically use around 35-45Mbps bursting up to 80-90Mbps every so often. We've 450 machines.

Look at the source of the home page (right click - view source) and do a text search for the phrase. You may then be able to identify which template contains the bit you want to edit. If you can't find the text, try looking for the image file name. If you let us have the URL - someone may have some more advice for you.

How long ago did you apply sysman permissions? I find that sims can be slow to catch up - have no idea why though, you'd think it should be instant.

Remember that whoever lodges your ruckus quote first will get preferential pricing, unless something has changed recently. This is an annoying part of procuring a ruckus solution. Difficult for the resellers too. Depending on how hands on you want to be, ubiquiti kit is proving reliable and pretty fast. I'd throw lightspeed into the suggestion pot for filtering - a real quick win if you're looking at byod and the monitoring is good. VPN - many firewalls have this as standard, so it depends on your fire walling needs.

I recently migrated from windows 2003 - SQL2008 to windows 2012 - SQL2012. It was a fairly painless process. Using the sql2012 migration tool I upgraded the database to a file on the old server (which leaves everything intact in case of issues) then copied the file to the new server and ran the sql2012 migration tool again as per capitas instructions. Copied over the DMS and changed the sims drive mapping and that was pretty much it.

I've heard quite a few people talk about the couch to 5k program - all of them have been positive about it. I downloaded it, but I'm not sure I'm built for running. My wife and I joined the gym in early December and I received a fitbit flex for Christmas. With the fitbit app and the monthly gym direct debit I'm feeling motivated to get active. Last week I even might have started enjoying it...

I usually agree with what Dave says - you get what you pay for. However I also think there are also exceptions to every rule. I've been using vidahost for six months now for my own sites - excellent service generally. I've coupled this with cloudflare. I can't praise them enough for their DDoS protection and CDN. The problem with shared hosting is you may be protected - but what about everyone else on the same box?

Yep, Ireland is in the EEA - what you might need assurances on is where backups and disaster recovery solutions are placed. I don't know too much about AWS I'm afraid.

Officially one of these territories is the USA under their safe harbor agreement. Amazons safe harbor registration is here... Safe Harbor - Organization Information but it doesn't specifically state the AWS service. You must inform the ICO if you intend to hold data outside of the EEA and have it mentioned on your registration.

I haven't used the point to point kit from ubiquiti but can't praise their wifi kit enough. We've got it in four of our schools now (and my house) and it's been fantastic. At the price - I'd be my first option if I needed to connect two remote buildings over that kind of distance.

Sounds to me like you have everything you need. I've set up a basic pair of VLANs on those switches - it was fairly straight forward. You just need to create an ID and name, then tag ports... IEEE 802.1Q VLAN Example Configuration Ports connected to end devices will need to be 'untagged' in the correct vlan. Ports used to interconnect switches, and connect to your access points will need to be 'tagged' in the two VLANs (school machines & BYOD). Then you should be able to setup another interface on your smoothwall and set your filtering policies. I haven't got a SW, but I'm fairly sure you should be able to get it to be your dhcp server, and allow access to internal services if you want to. Once you have the basics setup, you might want to look at different vlans for different levels of filtering on your BYOD network.
