It's all possible. As others have said, research your products well and don't scrimp on safeguarding and data security. The other thing I'd ask is what is best for the school? If you got run over by a bus, is the support there for the school to ensure safeguarding and data security when you are not there? Sometimes you have others in school who can assist but it may be best to think about a company who can manage things if something goes wrong. It may be cheaper (it may not too) but ensure the correct decision for the users.

This is what we do too. Can't remember the amount of times we've had staff leave only to return a year or two later. We also do this for students. Again we've had a number of ex students join us again as staff or interns.

Oh and don't forget to change your subnet in Active Directory Sites and Subnets. I've forgotten about that once or twice.

Your plan should work. Your 5406 will need to act as router, so setup VLANs here first. Your 5406 will end up being the router address for each subnet. And you'll need to input your edge router as the switches default router to ensure devices can get on the Internet. You'll need to create scopes on your dhcp server for each Vlan that requires this service, and enter your IP helper-address in your switch config on each Vlan as well. I'd advise you not to create any wireless subnets too big. A large subnet can soon cause a lot of broadcast which can hit APs hard. Once you have the above set up, it's then time to tag some devices and check they get IPs in the correct ranges, if all is well you need to think about tagging and untagging ports depending on what device is on the other end. I find re patching switches and keeping them logical is best - colour coded patch leads even better.

Apple products add a 'this way up' flag (for want of a better term) to video files which they read again to play the video back. The video is actually always recorded the same way up. On apple mobile devices the home button should be on the right when you video to be compatible with all playback devices. (so on an iphone/ipod touch the volume buttons would be towards the floor, and on an ipad the volume buttons are towards the ceiling). Services like Youtube, Vimeo etc. understand the hidden info and rotate the video to compensate. If IRIS haven't accounted for this in the software or iPod clamp, they've made a very silly error.

More and more of us are running our own filtering and monitoring products in our schools whether we are with the local LEA/RBC or we've moved to a private provider. If you are anything like me you take your duty of filtering and monitoring the young people within your organisation seriously knowing that failure to do so can have serious repercussions in some cases. As my children get older and access to devices in the home gets easier I've been thinking about how as a parent I keep my kids from straying too far into the nastier sections of the internet. My kids know if they see something they don't understand to see me or their Mum. They don't often have access when we're not around, but as our sofa has recently got bigger, and the smart phone screen are getting smaller (ok, it could be my eyes) it seems harder and harder to keep an eye on what they are doing. I'm currently using OpenDNS on a Wifi SSID the kids have access to, but it doesn't allow much control because I don't have a fixed IP and don't have a 24/7 machine to run a client on. My daughters laptop runs K9, but it's a bit hit and miss and must be monitored on the device it's self. Our 2 kids are getting Hudl2's for Christmas, and they are already set up with the parental tools loaded on them by The Parent Zone to block some sites and so they can't use them in the middle of the night. But none of these put me in a position where I think I've done a good job. After a bit of testing this morning it seems AD security group filtering is working again. Seems like the patch has worked. I've removed my OU filtering settings because they were a lot more messy in my environment. Reports are much faster now too, which obviously was one of the main reasons for the change. I for one am pleased.

It obviously hasn't been their best day, however I think we need to keep things in perspective. Schools Broadband probably should have planned this in for one week previous, enabling schools half term to test and fix any issues. I suspect there was a reason why they didn't, and they'll probably learn from that decision. I noticed the issue with user groups not getting the correct filtering before nine AM and after checking that the agent had deployed correctly on a few machines I was able to determine that our IP based filtering was working as it should. It became apparent that another group of users were being filtered correctly (one set up with OU based filtering) and I contacted schools broadband to confirm what I had found. About an hour later (presumably after testing themselves) an update went out to schools with a suggestion of the temporary fix (which I had already tested and implemented). Unless you know something I'm not aware of all schools were given a possible fix by 10:30am. Previous to this - assuming your client had been deployed correctly (a separate issue really and dependant on each individual school and their technical support rather than SB) your users activity was being logged, however all of them and the strictest level of filtering. If your client hadn't been deployed correctly, your users would all be anonymous, unless you challenge users to log in through the lightspeed blocked page. Were users safe? Yes, they probably were perfectly safe. Were lessons distrusted? Yes, especially if teachers didn't have an alternative lesson plan, but only for a fairly short period. Were we all shouted at for an issue not of our creation? Yes, but that's the job unfortunately (reminds me of this... Warning! One swear EDIT Warning! Three swears!). I don't know about your school, but the most common complaint was the lack of YouTube. If worst came to worst schools had it within their power to unblock such sites on that strict level of filter if it was truly impacting on teaching and learning. How quickly we forget the misgivings of our previous service providers - in my opinion, this wasn't anywhere close to the poor service offered by some of them.

I'm guessing the Children's centre is connected via a VPN or point 2 point link? Can't see why the lightspeed change would cause such issues with 'local' traffic otherwise?

The info coming out today from Schools Broadband has been on time and appreciated. Lightspeed (who I'm sure have 24 hour staff) are creating a patch to solve the issue which SB have suggested should be with them later today. OU and IP based filtering working perfectly here. Client out now to nearly all machines, so users are identified in our logs.

You should be able to use OU based filtering. We quickly set that up this morning and it is working for us. The AD USer Group filtering isn't working as it should at the moment. I'm looking into if those permissions cascade down for one of our local primaries. We've got it set on the OU our users are within, they're trying to implement it on a OU slightly higher up and it doesn't seem to be working. We're using IP specific filtering without an issue too, odd that yours isn't working.
