We started to use OPSmartDesk (OP SmartDesk - Great for Customer Support, ICT Help Desk and Asset Management. - OP Software Ltd) a couple of months ago. It's working out pretty well and users seem happy with it. You can set up multiple queues for different departments and it can be AD integrated. It is made and supported by @ICTNUT The room booking system has gone down well with teachers.

You can set different vlans for different SSIDs. Your switch and/or router will need to be aware also however.

I run three UAPs in my home (yes two would be sufficient, but...) and a Draytek 2830 ADSL Router. Three floor home, ground and middle floors connected by external Cat5e, middle and top via a pair of Zyxel 500meg powerlines. The unifi controller runs on a Raspberry Pi and I have three SSIDs and VLANs. One for adults, one with filtering and time control for the kids and a third for guests. After what @m25man said, I've just totted up my device count... 26, or 30 if you include the APs and the router as devices. I don't think its hard to hit 30+ devices these days.

I've done this yes, but obviously signal levels will drop. I've setup two nanostation bridges, one outside to inside a window around 40meters, and one inside to inside through two walls about 20m. Both rock solid.

Yup - I've used this too. The other one is Mikeys Active User Manager - which he released for free in the end. Hard to find now though.

Worth noting though that I found when fitting an M5 bridge, you can plug a Unifi UAP straight into the second M5 port and the injector will power both devices saving a socket!

I think it's more about getting your NTFS permissions right, which I'm sure the OP will be looking at once data is restored. :-)

We do much the same. All filtering should be age appropriate (of cause your definition of that may be different to mine) and therefore our sixth form have access to more than lower year groups. Our policy is much the same of that above, may be used when directed by the member of staff in the room for educational purposes. Attempting to circumvent the filtering (which includes 3G/4G etc.) will result in losing your right to use your own device. We allow all mobile devices. Not all students want or can afford a tablet, so we'd rather they used their phone than miss out on a learning opportunity.

What does it say under Name Servers - that should give you a clue. A bit late now, but agreeing a switch over date without planning the necessary DNS changes is a recipe for disaster.

I've seen one once I think... Cheap cables with cheap items. The saving in copper saves a fractions of a penny with each product sold.

We've named ours after metals. I find it easier to remember personally, but understand those that don't. Physical servers are precious metals; gold, silver, platinum. Virtual machines things like iron, copper, titanium, tungsten etc. Everything is documented so a new person coming into the school could quickly decipher what ran what. The CNAME suggestion above isn't a bad shout either.

Spent an hour this morning chasing around with this. Found the DotNet4.5 security update causing the issue about fifteen minutes ago. Should have come here first...! If it is a known bug, I do wish they'd link that article to the fault code - 1829-4733-7100 Would be handy @PhilNeal?

Interesting - I follow James Martins Yorkshire batter recipe (another Yorkshireman) 4 eggs, 4oz flour, half a pint of milk and a pinch of salt and pepper. It makes a pint of batter. So easy, I'm really not sure why people buy frozen.

Although I'm not a true Yorkshire man having only moved here at the age of two, it's fair to say I hadn't done much cooking before then. My mother and her parents both being from Yorkshire, I can again confirm I've never come across this Yorkshires round the joint malarkey. In fact, growing up we were quite traditional (especially at my Grans house) and our Yorkshire pudding was in fact served simply with gravy as the starter of a Sunday dinner.

That's really useful - I think our GAFE account was set up well before that option appeared. One of our partner primary schools has been having the occasional issue when they get a class full of kids to log on at the same time. The only google support document I found explained how to over ride the request for ten minutes. Thanks @crc-ict

There is a school of thought that I subscribe to that suggests flooding social media with positive updates about the school will quickly return bad comments to the bottom of the search page. Once you get more comfortable using social media you can use it to nip any negativity in the bud too. If you see a tweet from a parent for example with a gripe, simply say sorry that the feel like this and point them in the direction of someone who can deal with their complaint - much like bigger business. Once a school is more active on social media, pupils tend to reduce negative comments, because they might be seen and they might get in trouble. The issue is if this encourages them to be more vocal on other media out of sight of the school. It's always worth setting up a google alert to email you of any new search results mentioning the school.

Was just talking to a colleague who had been looking at a golf GPS range finder watch - thinks he might go for an apple watch now with an app for that. Best of luck with the name change.

I'll echo this. I went to bed last night with around 45% battery left. I think there is much more to come for the watch too. It's a great notification device (Ping!) but I think that is just the start. One gripe I do have is not being able to adjust the activity goals except for the calorie counter. I'd like to change my daily exercise goal from 30 minutes, and change the stand goal. It'll come I'd expect in an update down the line.

I've had my apple watch on my wirst for the last couple of hours. Some of it is a bit gimmicky yes but I've answered a call with it, sent texts and kept up to date with my diary, favorite'd a tweet. So far I can see some really interesting potential. Luckily my wife has one too, so I can play with the inter watch heartbeat, images and the like straight away.
