Good morning Hopefully, you can advise on an update problem. When I update my Hyper V Virtual Machines all updates/patches apply except for KB4072650. The update will simply not install. All updates install correctly on my physical Server 2012 boxes, it is just the VMs that is causing the issue. I have researched the issue and it relates to 'Hyper V Integration Components for VMs'. I was led to a couple of .cab files so tried installing them on the VMs, but no joy. Just wondering if anyone has come across this issue and if you are aware of a fix. Many thanks Eddie

Once again thanks for all your support. I cannot get to see the DH at the moment hes in meetings. I have the HDD attached to my PC and just ran RECUVA. It shows the deleted profiles and files associated with them including all office extensions, however when I filter down to documents it does not show any at alll for the DH. I am wondering if the files have gone somewhere else other than the usual place in the library.

Thanks everyone, cannot believe this has happened. Over 20 years working in IT and first time ever. The DH is also pastoral lead so its extra crippling.

Good morning everyone On Monday I was preparing the deputy head's PC for relocation to another office in school. Before I moved it I needed to add SIMS. While I was installing SIMS I checked out the PC and noticed that the hard drive only had around 800MB. I uninstalled some old software and ran disk check to get rid of the old windows updates etc. Then I ran Delprof. I ran Delprof assuming that the DH was saving his work to the network the same as every other staff member. Happy with the work the PC was relocated and the DH moved into his new office. Yesterday, the deputy head reported that he could not access his files. I checked his shared home folder and the share name did not match the home folder path in his AD account. There was a letter missing. I checked shadow copies and tried a restore from VEEAM and when looking at his home folder it was totally emtpy. He hasnt actually been saving his work to the network since he started work for us in September. My guess is that his work has been somehow been saved to the local machine, but of course I ran Delprof so if it was going to any sort of local profile it would have been deleted. I urgently need some advice on how I can recover this data. I didnt sleep a wink last night and have been sick this morning :-( Would the data have gone into a temporary folder somewhere on the hard drive? I took the PC home last night and ran a data recovery tool. The tool identified some files and some were unrecovereable. My plan this morning is to take the PC back into work and disconnect the hard drive and connect it to a SATA caddy and connect it to another PC and run the restore software from there to see if the results are different. Please can anyone help me here. Has anyone had experience of this issue? Thanks in advance Ed

Hi all, apologies if I have posted to the wrong forum. We have recently gone to tender for the renewal of our managed print service. I provided the 4 companies with the exact same requirements and specifications. The details were sent via post on the same day. All four returned their response via post on the deadline. The tender applications were opened by the BM and myself at the same time and were stamped. The BM made final decision on the successful vendor. The BM is asking me for evidence of using a tender framework such as CPC for the ESFA. I did look at this initially because I used the framework earlier in the year for our Microsoft licensing, but the quotes that came back were no cheaper than our existing reseller. I am worried that I may be in trouble for not having the evidence for using a framework. Any suggestions on what I should do in this situation? I would really appreciate any advice or guidance. Yes it is one of the very few things I have managed to get extra capital for during my time here. Thanks for the information, I think I will probably expand the existing cluster across to the old kit, but I am worried about the network traffic side of things, it is a lot of data to replicate.

Hi all hopefully some of you can advise. I upgraded our virtual server environment and SAN in the summer. I have kept the old kit in the hope that when I get time I would try and set up the old kit in another building on our site to act as failover if disaster struck and wiped out our new SAN and server environment. Our new setup consists of: HP MSA 2040 x2 HP DL380 G9 | built as Microsoft Hyper V Cluster The old kit consists of: HP MSA 2000 x2 HP DL380 G5 I can obviously provide more info if required, but at the moment I am just investigating options and the most cost effective way to implement this solution. I have installed 4 Aerohive AP230s and will use Hive Manager Cloud Management to manage the wireless network side of the solution. I have the following resources: 1 HP Switch 5406zl (J8697A) (Core) 1 HP 2530-48G-PoEP Switch (J9772A) (Edge - Sixth Form) 4 Aerohive AP230 Access Points 1 Aerohive Hive Manager 1 Microsoft Network Policy Server (RADIUS) 1 Smoothwall UPS S8 Appliance The two switches are linked by a 1GB fibre connection. I have created 2 VLANs: VLAN 10 and VLAN 20 VLAN 10 is named CORP_VLAN for Teachers and Staff access VLAN 20 is named BYOD _VLAN for BYOD traffic internet access only I have a RADIUS Server setup to use 802.1x Windows Authentication for both VLANs On the core switch B3 connects to port 49 of the Edge switch and this is the fibre uplink connection. Hi everyone I would like to set up BYOD for our Sixth Form area. I am going to use a combination of AeroHive web management and Smoothwall to enable the solution. I would like Sixth Form students to be able to come into school with their own devices and only get an internet connection so that they can access Office365 and the VLE. I was wondering if there is a way that I could create security, segragation authorisation, identification without setting up VLANs on our switches. I would appreciate any help/advice on this. Hello Everyone Just wondering if anyone else has been on the recieving end of a HT bringing in independent ICT Consultants to conduct an ICT Audit? The story is this. A new SLT was formed approx 3 years ago. I notified the new SLT, (including Business Manager) then that we would need an investment in our back end in 2016. This was communicated to them at an ICT Strategy meeting and via an annual ICT Audit report that I send to all SLT members. I carried out numerous hours worth of research and costing exercises, that I am sure you are all familiar with, until I arrived at my decision for the proposed change. In February 2016 I submitted my proposal and it was then added to the agenda for next ICT Strategy meeting. I packaged the proposal as normal with initial proposal, business case, research notes, details of the recommendation including company details, costs etc. The HT agreed that the work needed carried out, but she requested an Independent Consultation and Second Opinion on the proposal. This was the first time in my 25 year career in the IT Industry that my judgement has been called into question. I have looked after several budgets and invested wisely and productively for establishments over the years and I pride myself on my business decisions. Today, the ICT Consultant attended school and was impressed that I had all business cases, project plans and costings available. He agreed with my proposal for the backend system renewal stating that it was an excellent decision. He was also asked by th HT to check on internet connectivity and server side issues. Before he took a look at these I informed him that during that past two years we have been unable to carry out any essential maintenance during school holidays due to the amount of revision classes that have taken place. For example, I have scheduled the upgrade of a Server 2003 Fileserver on two occasions even though I informed the SLT that 2003 was no longer supported and that we could run into trouble because of that. The consultant could not believe this and marked it down to add to his final report that will be presented to the HT. All server and switch event logs were checked and, as I already expected, these checks were greeted with good comments with no technical problems to report. I possibly looked at this the wrong way and took it that the SLT had lost confidence in me, or that the new SLT are just being thorough. It would be good hear some views on this especially if someone has been in the same position. Cheers Ed

Hi, I have set up a Smoothwall SSL VPN connection to enable two of our staff to work at home. I created the SSL VPN client, installed it and tested the connection at home. I can successfully make a connection and receive an IP address on the 10.110.0.x which is passed from the Smoothwall. I would like the two staff to be able to connect to their network shares and work on and save content to these shares. However, as this address is on a completely different IP range I obviously cannot connect to any resources. Is there any other configuration required on the Smoothwall or on our internal DNS servers? Hi, I am running a Citix Xen server 6.0.2 pool, which incorporates 2 physical servers running the citrix hypervisor and these are connected to a SAN via channel fibre connections. I have all of the latest updates and patches installed, but I am having issues with one of the VMs. The problem is linking to a virtualised fileserver which still has the Server 2003 OS installed. At least once daily, the network runs like a dog and the phones start to ring with cries of "I cannot save, I cannot log on!". Going by the logs on Xen Server for that virtual machine, at the time of the poor network performance, there are big spikes on the system graphs, this is mainly on disk activity and the activity maxes out. The CPU, memory and network also max out at certain times in the day, but it does not affect the network in anyway. The most activity can be seen on the DC VMs when students and staff login in the morning and after lunch, but this can be expected. I have 4 virtual CPUs assigned to the Fileserver VM and 8GB of RAM. I have always managed to sort out Xen Server issues, but need some urgent advice on this one. I am hoping that it is the 2003 OS that is causing the issues. I also noticed from another post that someone had issues because they were using universal print drivers on the network. Anyone have any suspicions on this one? Regards Eddie

Hi, hopefully someone can help with an Office 365 external mail flow issue that started last week. This problem is intermittent because some email from external domains is being received by internal mailboxes. I have checked all of the DNS records at our external DNS hosts Easily.co.uk and they seem fine, however, when I have spoken to Microsoft support they say that the MX records are not set up correctly at Easily. I then spoke to Easily and they told me that the records were fine. Nothing has changed on our internal DNS servers so I am assuming that all is fine there. When an external sender sends an email to someone on our domain they are not receiving any NDRs because the email message is showing as sent in their sent messages. I am now thinking that there may be a filtering issue. We use BTNet for our internet provision so we have a CISCO 2900 Router and for our web filtering and firewall we have Smoothwall Unified Threat Management in place. Has anyone experienced these issues with Office 365 Email and if so where would you recommending making checks? Many thanks Eddie

Thanks for those quick answers and I agree with both. I was just interested to see if anyone had managed to pull off the holy grail of imaging. I have always been at the point of doing all except renaming I just wondered if you could get to a point where the PCs could receive the image via WDS (including the answer files which were set up on Image Manager) then reboot themselves to a point where the clients were actually ready to receive a new PC name? I am sure it can be done using Ghost, I wouldn't go as far as purchasing Ghost just for this. cheers Eddie

Hi, I am busy setting up my 2 unattended answer files for the WDS deployment of Windows 7 to a classroom 30 PCs. Is there a way of fully automating the WDS process so that it is 100% automated? e.g. giving each PC a unique given name, which we have chosen and adding the computers to the network. Also registering and activating the serial code. My aim is to be able to reimage a whole room over a weekend or overnight and for the PCs to be fully functional without any intervention. Hi Everyone The SLT decided to not renew the maintenance fee for Frog last year as the new head thought it was too costly. Well, I need to change some network details on the external NIC, but I cannot log into the Maintenance Console on the Frog Server. Frog have informed me that they would need to charge £750.00 to provide me with the root password!!! I have tried to get around it by using SystemRescueCD and change the network card details there, but not managed to change the settings yet. I was just wondering if anyone could advise me on a workaround on this or if they have been left in a similar position by Frog? Look forward to your replies

Hi, we are just about to launch Office 365 at our school. I was wondering if anyone can share their experiences and advice on launching the service to staff and students. I am particularly concerned about introducing the email side to staff. For years we have been using the web based email service provided by the LA, but since converting to an Academy it was clear that we needed our own internal email system so this will be a considerable change for staff. What would be the best way to phase out the LA system in order to phase in the new system? I would appreciated any advice on this. Kind Regards Eddie

Really appreciate your reply on this. I will try out your advice tomorrow and let you know. Office 365 is definitely the way to go, but there are so many processes to get right to get the SSO and AD sync working properly. Won't be giving up on it though
