  1. It seems to be something on the laptops themselves - when I log in on a desktop PC it works just fine... Maybe something to do with offline files?
  2. I've tried giving explicit permissions to the group `pupils' (which includes all pupil users). Despite the fact that pupils have full control of the shared folder under which sits all their home directories (and this has propagated to their individual home folders), they still can't access H:\ - for some reason, nor can they browse to it by typing \\oa-mk-dc01\pupil users\ I've noticed that the share shows up as [Offline Share] when you hover the mouse over it...
  3. Hi folks, I'm having some trouble with pupil user home folders and group policy folder redirection - can anyone help me? We had a catastrophic server failure a couple of months ago, and things needed rebuilding; luckily almost all the files remained intact, including the pupil user home folders. However, now when a pupil logs in and tries to open their H:\ drive, they get an error `H:\ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network... etc' I've checked permissions and sharing permissions, and as far as I can tell, they are correct. Not only is the user not able to open H: as it appears in Windows explorer, but the folder redirection for `My Documents' doesn't work either. Anyone seen this before? thanks a lot
  4. Yes, I support the admin and curriculum networks, and pretty much all IT related devices in both schools I work in. Both schools have windows AND Mac networks, which has been an interesting challenge...
  5. I think you can, but it's not that simple - it involves registry keys
  6. I don't know if there is anything helpful in this link: Some computers not updating new IP in DNS - TechRepublic
  7. It sure sounds like you've tried almost everything! So if you manually assign IP addresses and DNS, it works OK? Are these PCs the same make and models as the others, or are they different?
  8. I'll be there - I won't need any food booking though as I'm only down the road in Northampton! Looking forward to it!
  9. Just a quick update, after I enabled SMB on one of the shared home folders, all my mac problems suddenly went away!! I wonder if the latest updates of either OS or Server itself breaks AFP... Anyone had an experience similar?
  10. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7252103?start=15&tstart=0
  11. A quick update for anyone watching this thread: the StaffHomes folder was only being shared using AFP for some reason, where all our other shared folders on the mac server were using both. Last night I ticked SMB on the StaffHomes so that both SMB and AFP were being used. This morning the user reported that everything was suddenly working again!
  12. Well, I checked all the users that are having one problem or another - all have File Sharing ticked in services. Interestingly enough though, when I logged onto a mac with the local admin account and tried to connect to any user's using AFP it couldn't find the server... It only seems to work using SMB. I've checked, and all shared files except one have both AFP and SMB ticked.
  13. Aaron, that is great -thanks a bunch for all your help!
  14. I've created a new account called `pupil', but when I go to create a home drive under the `studenthomes' folder I get an error: Unable to create home directory. The home directory could not be created because of an error. When I look in the StudentHomes folder, it has actually created a home directory for the pupil user... When I try to log in as `pupil', I get the same error as listed in my other Mac related thread - You are unable to log in to the user account pupil at this time Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.
  15. Cheers Aaron, all users have the `login' box ticked. I haven't given them access to `administer this server' though.
  16. Hi Aaron, in the DNS section of Mac Server, I've put the Windows DC down as a forwarder. It's strange because all macs in the school are configured the same way, most teachers aren't affected by this problem. They pick up DHCP from the Windows server, but I've put the Mac server (as well as the Windows server) into the DNS section of their network settings. All macs are bound to Open Directory and Active Directory. Windows users occasionally log onto macs.
  17. Interesting, I just tried logging onto the server with the user's account that inspired this post, and it logged on fine, but when I log off - I get the same error: There was a problem connecting to the server “server.orchard.lan” The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Strange considering that I'm actually on the server.
  18. So far it seems to be a selection of users, most can still log on and access their home drives, and the main shared folder. I've not restored anything using Time Machine either.
  19. If I do it with the IP address (10.83.79.20) I get: server: 10.83.79.9 (which is the IP address of the Windows DC...) address: 10.83.79.9#53 20.79.83.10.in-addr.arpa name= server.orchard.lan
  20. I think the permissions are propagated - I will put up some screen grabs
  21. Cheers Antonio - it was two separate networks, a windows one for admin, and a mac one for teachers and students. I inherited it, and I've tried to run it in a more integrated way (which has been a steep learning curve); some groups from Windows AD can log onto macs if they need to. DHCP is and always was provided by Windows. DNS is also configured on the Windows DC, but it is also running on the mac. The mac domain is orchard.lan Windows domain is orchard-ad.local When I got here, there were quite a few users listed in Open Directory with home folders set up on the mac server. This particular user I set up in Open Directory, and used OD to create her a home directory. It has been working for the last year or so, up until very recently. I'm now having other issues with older OD users not being able to log in any more, which I've been posting in a separate thread - I don't know if it is all linked...
  22. Thanks both for replying - I've checked the time so I am fairly sure it is not that... 23. For some reason, our mac network pupil users `year3, year4 etc) can no longer log on to any of the macs – it starts to log them on and then they get this error: You are unable to log in to the user account “_____” at this time Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. I wondered if it was a permissions issue on the home folders, so I’ve tried to add and change permissions, but I suspect I’m just making it worse; either way I haven’t made it better! I've also tried (after making copies of the home folders) deleting the home folders and recreating them using the Workgroup Manager `Create Home Now' button, but then I get another error on the server `Unable to create home directory error' The server is running El Capitan after a fairly recent upgrade, and server version 5.1 Anyone else had this trouble? thanks a lot
  24. Interesting, when I look at DNS, in the `host names' window, it only shows the mac server and its IP address. However, when I choose to `show all records' it is listed several times, with several different IP addresses
