Netgear's a good choice, I've never been disapointed by the netgear stuff i've had. Although have a look into the PowerConnect switches Dell do. Their 24 port 10/100 unmanaged switches start at £56! and that's before any educational discount!

Things started to go missing from my office which had open access so all staff now have proximity cards and access to my office which has the server room leading off from it is now resricted to 2 people

Am I missing something here? Doesn't Mailwasher just show you what email you have and let you delete it before downloading it from the server? That's not really much different from deleting it from the Inbox. Or does Mailwasher make some decision and rate the mail as spam etc?

Thanks for the suggestions guy's but they all look like they sit on the mail server. I was after something that sits on the desktop machine and scans as the mail is pulled down from the mail server. I didnt mean afford in a monitary sense, I meant because I have control over my mail server I can put whatever software I please onto it! Any ideas?

Because I run my own e-mail server I can afford the luxuries of things such as spam assassin to filter out spam from my email. My girlfriend works for a Bridal company and they're getting so much spam it's ridiculous. Out of 130 e-mails this morning, 120ish were spam, his mail host say they don't have any anti spam measures in place and there's nothing they can do about it, short of moving his email to another host, has anyone used any desktop anti spam products to cut junk mail. Is there any free software that does the job well or is he looking at paying for something?

Not seen anything like that, I'm having weird problems with the latest beta on a Precision 380 Workstation though. In both Vista x64 and x86 it detects the Broadcom 57xx Gigabit LAN chip and it works, but very very slowly. I can get files from my LAN but as soon as you try and browse tinternet or connect to Windows Update it just goes so slow and times out. Tried manually asigning an IP and DHCP. Symantec Antovirus 10.1 (which is claimed to be Vista compatable craps out with errors too), I don't like Aero and I hated the damn "Windows needs your permission to do x" messages. Had to quickly turn them off! IMHO with all the fancy bits of grahics it's too distracting, setting it back to Windows Classic helps though!

Nope, I didnt mention running Windows on it, quite frankly I don't like running Windows on my MBP. The keyboard layout is screwy, I can't use the Brightness/Volume keys and the backlit keyboard doesn't work. My point was that if you bought a MacBook, for <£800 it's of a higher spec than the £779 Dell laptop and you get iMovie and iDVD thrown in for free.

Sounds like you're not the sharpest tool in the box! You've obviously never installed software onto a Mac! If you're only looking after one machine then a child could do it, the majority of software you can simply copy to the Applications folder. On large installs Apple Remote Desktop simplifies even further the install process. Select machines, select Copy Items. Yes there are programs you can't install like this, but Windows isn't perfect too.

I have 3 generations of Powerbook here (G4 Ti, 17 G4, Intel MacBook Pro) that all work perfectly. Which is more than can be said for the Inspiron's with dodgy screens and hinges that we've had.

I would say it's the mapped drives, I had a similar problem a few months back with a Windows 2003 Server, a dodgy uninstall of APC PowerChute made it randomly freeze. Every client logged onto the domain that had mapped drives froze, the ones without, didnt.

It's a pitty that you don't know how easy it is to get a Mac to authenticate from AD. At under £800 for a well specced MacBook with 1GB RAM, 60GB HD, Bluetooth, WiFi and Firewire. It even comes with Video Editing software, DVD+/- Dual Layer Burner and DVD Authoring software. It's a shame that it's "too much effort" though. Honestly, what is it that people have against macs? They serve a purpose as much as a Windows machine or a Linux server does.

What you need is Darik's Boot and Nuke Great free utility that completely trashes a drive, it can be set to do a 35 round wipe or just a simple wipe. It's never failed me! Get it here!

Easynet and our RBC are currently working to make our connection redundant from the POPs to the Internet. Think it's a bit expensive to put fiber down a different route to every school just in case a digger goes through it!

We've had the Internet go down once or twice, saved the day by connecting my phone to a machine and created a net connection over 3G GPRS for staff to send email, the latency is horrible. Glad I was on an unlimited data tarrif at the time too!

Me and a few friends discovered Subterranea Britannica a couple of months ago and have been looking at the local Nuclear Monitoring stations. You'll be surprised at how many there are, most are locked but some are open and you can go inside them. They're just 15x15 rooms but some have the tables and chairs still inside! I thought I better say that although my experience with NTL customer services has been less than helpful, when it works their service is excellent. When I lived with my parents we had broadband for 5 years with not a single problem, no billing errors or anything. Even though I'm still waiting for someone to get back to me about my many months of problems for what I pay to NTL I get what I want cheaper than having to go to BT for a landline, Sky for TV and someone else for DSL.
