I'm very caffeine sensitive..like alcohol..I can have maybe 1 glass, and that's enough to do the job and send my balance gaga. Caffeine is funny..we go to LEA meetings (me driving), and all they serve is black coffee in HUGE McDonalds style jumbo cups...by the time it comes to leave, I'm positively climbing the walls...I think Steve dreads it..

We've got some job vacancies uploaded to our website, and I'm having calls about "people can't download them" and "they're corrupt". Madeley Academy Sports College Is the address, and there are 3 zips on there. From my end, they seem fine. On the server, they seem fine too. Extracted, they're fine...yet people are having issues. Since all of our traffic runs through a netcache, I can't guarantee I'm not seeing cached copies..can anyone out there try to download/extract them and see if they have issues? Many thanks...

We've just had some good news from one of our parent academies, who are reaching the "IT Stock turnaround" point that they have every 5 years...we're running kit that's a good 7-8 years old or in some cases, even older. We've got to run it into the ground because when we move to our new site (12 months), it'll all be freshly equipped with new kit..so no point in buying any new kit for here now. They've come up and offered us a mass load of their "old" kit..P4/3ghz Dells, TFTs etc. Which is ace, because we can now retire the aged kit, and replace it. HOWEVER, the aged kit IS running perfectly OK. So..here's my query for you all...if we wiped the retired kit, and decided to make the old kit available to some of the kids for home use.. how would we go about the whole "not our fault if you blow it up/it kills you" regulations..? How do you all do it? It's useless for a domain almost, but for basic home use it'd all work quite well..and quite a few of our kids have no computer at home, so it'd be nice to offer them these. It's just all the legal discalimer hoopla that's offputting.. Any guidance?

try safe mode and see if it continues...if it does, I say hardware..check for overheat issues or damaged motherboard components like capacitors etc. Download and run Memtest to check the RAM.. I have a Dell Precision here that I've ghosted twice..runs A1 in here, A1 next door..take it back to it's room, and instant recurring BSOD/Boot loop. Bring it back here - it's fine. My money for that is the TFT...I've got a CRT downstairs that is guaranteed to produce an instant and continual BSOD on any machine I hitch it to. Computers are weird..

How badly affected is the child? Have they had any proper professional assessment done? If it's any help. I have CP and poor motor control as well, and I can merrily run our Eval Dell Latitude tablet without issue. Handwriting recognition works OK, but it's something to watch in tablet mode..if it needs input, it'd ask for either handwriting (like newtons used to), OR you get a piddly little onscreen keyboard. As CP can affect motor control and handwriting, that might be an issue. I always use the onscreen KB..heh. Seems quite tough as a unit..not convinced of the screens longevity though if treated less than gently. Lid catch is utter pants as well. If you can, request an evaluation unit (as we did) or find an independant source of evaluation kit and advice for "less able" students. God, that phrasing makes me shudder. I was evaluated..again and again. I provided the primary/infants first BBC micro.. I blame that for getting me into IT.. EDIT: Sod me, this thread is probably redundant now..hah..sorry about that..

Telling them apart is easy..ours are usually \\taw900z002\taw900p0xx If they're on the secondary server, it becomes \\taw900z003\taw900p0xx We use the "z" designation for auxilliary servers, "p" for printers, "v" for virtual machines, and so on and so on. Printing is managed on it's own box, so if it goes down, or if any others go off, we can still keep rolling. As I say, we're virtualising the box, which will make the whole thing fairly bombproof.

We do..currently running the "main" print server, but also have a supplemental server doing other tasks that has the same printers installed using the microsoft migration utility. We just put a batch file on the staff share that deletes any existing mappings and remaps to the secondary server, and if there are any issues we just say "run that", and off they go without interruption. We don't do printers by GPO though, we use con2prt.. We're in the middle of creating a virtual print server, and we'll be migrating people over to that gradually (or possibly en masse over the summer).

I've twice been a passenger in a vehicle going like the whatsits..one MR2 (couple of years old, M6 toll (again), well over the ton..was wobbling like a jelly..not reassuring), and one Pug605SVE (A5 bypass when first opened, and hell did that thing move..real french cruiser ) In the toyota I had my eyes shut, and in the 605, neither of us even noticed we were "ton+"..it felt like 60. This was in our younger years though..personally, I've always preferred 50-60, and get told I drive like an old fart. Even at 45-50, you can have immense fun with roundabouts and cornering. On quiet roads and trading estates of course..heh. I think I must have poor grip tyres..it's quite easy to go sideways on some surfaces, and roundabouts can quite easily produce tortured rubber squealing.. Maybe it's because I have 155/80/13 wheels..quite narrow. Always seems to surprise garages, that..they're the same as when I bought it..5.5j rims, apparently usually found with wider rubber, and those tyres. All good fun though.

It always staggers me the people here that have Astras the same age or newer than mine (1997 P), with the same or smaller engines (1.6 8valve) and are astounded at the fact that I can drag in excess of 400 miles out of my tank when they struggle to get 250.. Bear in mind it's an automatic as well..I do follow most of those tips. Gentle acceleration up to 50, when lockup of the torque converter kicks in and it's at it's most economical. If I need to overtake, I keep the throttle light (as usual) and just tap the sports mode button to drop the gears, then turn it off when I'm done. I try to judge for minimal braking and "rolling start" at traffic lights (saves the inertia). When I did my "usual week" trips, I could get a fortnight from the tank which was lovely...now I've cut back, I'm managing 3.5 weeks..hopefully a month. Most of the car's trips are work trips...BUT..there appears that there may be a bus leaving a few minutes walk up from the house at 7.35am, dropping off right outside here for 8.02am...returning at 4.53pm..which is close enough to my hours to be useable. It'll require me leaving early, but if I'll be here earlier, it's little or no odds I say. If I used the bus to work...and I manage at least 3 weeks to a tank with work..it could be a 2 month tank or more..we use the local shops as a rule, we've signed upto a "weekly veg box delivery" scheme, there is even a local butcher etc 20 minutes walk away. I need to look into getting a monthly ticket, which they apparently do. It also seems I could catch route 44 from the school and get to pretty much anywhere I need to go in Telford..which is nice. My mother in law is carless for the next 6 months or so...and it's not affecting family life much, once the kids have adjusted to walking and public transport..

I'd have thought so...unless Dell have a custom supplier..

I'll never forget Hex having a mad dash session, leaping onto the table, and using my open Inspiron screen as a launchpad for extra height...the sound of the screen thwacking the table as it shot flat open was horrific. He flew alright...boot up the arse, vertical launch..strange how he now picks his way very carefully round the Inspiron..heh..

does he have a cat? Reason I ask, is I do, and the opportunist cat decides that the laptop is toasty and proceedes to sit on it. Now, my Inspiron and Jems Vostro can take a 4.5kg cat, but...he does get shooed away. Makes the lid/screen back flex a fair bit..

was it in his car, has it been cold? I've had my own one shatter like that when it was left in a car overnight, even in its padded case. Temperature stresses can do it. Mums Compaq laptop has gone the same as well...in it's case, in the boot, suitably restrained...one cold night and bang goes the panel. Other than that, I'd say object on the keyboard, or punched. Especially with the past history..

We've just recieved our new quad-core PE840 "play" server, and I found myself wondering..the Dell LED on the front..normally blue, goes flashing orange if there's an issue...has anyone seen these LEDs anywhere? I'm getting back into my electronics hobby, and I always thought it was 2 discrete LEDs..not a combo. I can see white/blue, yellow/blue, red/green etc..but nowhere a blue/orange. I told you it was a bit of an odd query..I quite like the LED though!

Oh, I know...I do refuse payment though, except for fuel costs. It's just not the "done" thing to go in, say "oh, it's that button stuck in...*thump*..there you go..feel small and daft for calling someone to it.."..much better to make them feel useful and hide what it is, instead of silly.
