  1. Sorry to say, but in order to make change in IT you have to take the lead. I don't ask, I tell. I always sell in the name of security and system integrity, with the sweetener being improved performance.
  2. Hopefully the VL downloads will be available on the same day.
  3. Testing it on our domain will be one of my main activities this summer, that will decide whether we go with deployment together with SSD upgrades or not.
  4. I'll be installing it both at work and home. Been on the TP for some time so there won't be any surprises.
  5. We've had good experience with W8.1 on tablets and that's spurring me on as W7 is getting a bit long in the tooth and is not as secure. Fine on our network, but the staff take their laptops home to their insecure networks and pick up all sorts of crap. The worst thing about the Dell tablets are the docks, which are just cr*p. I'm draft planning on migrating all the laptops to W10 Pro with an HD swap to SSDs at the same time, starting in late summer. I also have to setup encryption to meet the new EU Data Regulation so would rather do it all at once if possible. We'll use MDT and deploy it with Office 2013, which we're already using. Testing proper will ramp up when the Volume License version of W10 Pro becomes available and I can put the image into MDT.
  6. Windows 10 Mobile update: 10136 is a LOT more stable than 10080 and really worth the effort to upgrade to. However there is an upgrade bug in 10080 meaning that you cannot upgrade it. You must revert to WP8.1 first using the MS recovery tool, reinstall Windows Insider and then go up to 10. Be warned, it takes a while.
  7. 10130 fixes the issue with AMD graphics. Otherwise, seems more stable overall. Windows Mail crashes occasionally.
  8. Edge crashes with my AMD graphics. No matter, got it going with basic graphics by uninstalling the driver and Catalyst.
  9. An SSD makes such a difference. The Samsung 840 Evo in mine goes link stink!
  10. Both Edge and IE11 measure faster than Chrome!
  11. Useful, thanks. I am one of those users who really likes the cleanness of the W8.1 Metro Internet Explorer and use it a lot. I think Edge will be even better as it will run windowed or full screen and gives much (but not all) of that lovely clean screen experience.
  12. To some of those questioning computing power, try running SIMS processes like Timetabling or Report printing, Exchange Powershell scripts or video editing and see how much longer you have to wait for things to get done. Our time is valuable and team size small, economising on the PCs we use is actually a false economy. We do need more power because we use a hell of a lot more than the average teacher.
  13. Custom with MSI mobo, AMD quad-core, 8GB RAM, ATI graphics, 24" screen, W8.1. I'm going to dump it for a Surface Pro 4 with dock when they're released as I use my own Surface 2 so much around the school and in SLT meetings.
  14. 10074 is a lot better!
  15. It works fine for me, including Sharepoint and OWA. I like the clean design and fitting of full-screen pages like YouTube inside the window.
  16. Aircon is set to 22C, temperature reads 28C. Aircon is useless and I get all the excuses from the engineers but not the cool air that we need.
  17. I've just upgraded to a Pi 2 for my audio streamer based on Volumio. It's fast and works beautifully well.
  18. Thanks, I'll take a look tomorrow.
  19. I did one recently to our students. Many were positive but one whole year group obviously have a grudge and we got comments like "they block everything" and "they never fix anything" which was frankly quite demoralising and got my team's backs up as they often bend over backwards for the students. It's a double-edged blade, for sure. Set the questions carefully if you want useful feedback.
  20. Agreed, that's a good move although it may have already got through. I'll check too.
  21. WP8.1 is a beautiful OS, focussed on productivity and with great integration with Office and OneDrive. I can't think of one good reason why you'd want a desktop on it. Bring on WP10, I'm waiting for it to come to the Nokia 930.
  22. I note that 10049 has the same issue with the Mail/Calendar/People apps as before, requiring you to Powershell uninstall them and reinstalling from the Store. Spartan is nice, though.
  23. It took almost three hours to upgrade my AMD 6-core beast with Samsung SSD, and the entire night to upgrade my Tosh 8" tablet!
  24. Happy to help
  25. If you find SIMS takes longer to start after upgrading SQL, don't forget (as I did) to modify the firewall rule to allow a program through, as it still points to the old SQL executable. This results in 30s rather than 8s startup as it tries then falls back the connection method.
