  1. Ok i have little to no experience with webservers... our school website will only work if you put www. infrom of the domain. How can i add a rule or name (not sure of the termanology i should be using here) so the you can just enter the domain in IE and get to the site. eg http://www.mywebsite.sch.uk works fine mywebsite.sch.uk doesn't work i think it something to do with DNS and forward look ups..... but i might be guessing here. thanks for your help.
  2. I'm right in thinking that if we have a SITE volume license (brand new one) and have the MSHUP (MS Home use program) benefit, teachers will need to purchase a copy of Office 2010 from the MSHUP site at a highly discounted price to be able to use on a personal machine at home? Do they have to purchase a license for a school owned laptop for home use? Im confused how... i've read to may Microsoft T&C agreements now LOL in the past, office 03 was just installed on school owned laptops for them to take home...... not personal computers..... but i'm looking at all the software terms now. thx
  3. We dont have a mail server on site. We dont have the need for one.
  4. At the mo we have one physical Controller. We have never used virtual servers before but are willing to use them. the servers will be running 2008 r2 Ent also thx
  5. Hi ben thx for the reply, DHCP DNS WSUS SIMS FOG (on a linux box or maybe could vm?) FILESERVER SOPHOS WEBSENSE CASHLESS CATERING was looking at app-v also.... but still need to do more research on this. thx for your input
  6. i wouldn't say no input..... more like "We can't just run a home pc, it doesn't work like that. we need server hardware with high spec cpus, lots of ram and lots of hdd space. Dell and HP are good brands." ultimately, its the schools decision in our scenario. the best we could do is get them for a cheap as poss. which i think we've done very well.
  7. sorry all Dells 2x 710 2x 610 We have off site mail, which i hate. And if ref to other people buying ours servers, i couldn't agree more..... but sometimes its a handpalm scenario. still better than the core-duo we had delivered for the job from "PC Planet". Didn't you know that a home desktop with lots of ram will be able to server the schools 900+ clients. Anyway thats another story and it gives me high blood pressure! thx for your in put guys.
  8. The school is moving to server 08 r2 as well as win7. we have an exsiting 2003 network running xp. ...... seen a order form for --------------------------------------------- 2x 2x intel xeon 6c cpus 48gb ram 2x300gb sas 4x600gb sas ------------------------------ 1x 2x intel xeon 6c cpus 48gb ram 2x300gb sas 4x900gb sas ------------------------------ 1x 1x intel xeon 4c cpu 8gb ram 6x 600gb sas so that four new server for me to unbox! high spec tho.... i thinking virtual servers. if the stuff was yours..... how would you config them.
  9. Ok then thx for the help guys
  10. oh its as simnple as that for the logon screen also? I was under the impression that i had to build and recompile and logon file of some kind
  11. Hi guys, i had on kid ask me this last week. hes a good kid and always telling me who and where people in his class are getting games from . Anyway, he asked if it was ok with us (techies) and his teacher, if the school could hold a design competition to design windows 7 logon and wallpaper screens. (the site is changing to W7 this year). its not just him, but other kids (and teachers) are really excited about the move. i dont have an issue with this, but thought id ask you guys who have modded the logon screens about the difficulties i might face. Am i shooting myself in the leg with trying to deploy a modded logon screen....
  12. Hi guys, sorry for the 101 questions i've been asking over the past fews days.... the info you guys are giving me is really helping. i do have another question tho i have a dell r610 with 4 1gb nic cards. i have two core switches in a stack and i want to be able to have the server connected to both physical switches in the stack for through-out and redundancy. after some power googlin' i think i need the switches to have a feature called VSS? to allow me to connect to two seperate switches in a stack...... The 4 nics are set as a team of 1x 4 aggregated links. i've drawn alittle pic (plz dont laugh LOL) can anybody shine a light on this plz? EDIT: the core switches are HP 5500-24G DC EI if help any http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.asp?sku=10256530&mfg_part=JD373A&pagemode=ca
  13. that post was epic!! thx for taking the time to respond like that! that helps me heap loads! thx very much
  14. i only have 6 bays!! LOL one server is 6x600gb sas and the other 6x300gb sas. so would raid1 (2x600) and raid6 (4x600) without a hotspare be good? at the mo we have raid5 (6x174gb) inc a hotspare. the raid6 added parity would remove the need to have a hotspare would it not?
  15. thx alot. this helps me loads
  16. Hi guys, Im replacing some old servers (Yay). With the current setup we have a single RAID5 to which two virtual discs are setup. C: & D: Im told that its better to have two RAIDS. RAID1 C: & RAID5 D: what do you guys have, and what are the benifits? thx
  17. even if the motherboard doesn't support UEFI? eg, non UEFI MOBO, raid5 c: @ 4TB(gpt), would the server boot if running 08 R2 @ see the full 4TB or UEFO MOBO, raid5 c: @ 4TB (gpt), would the server boot if running 08 R2 @ see the full 4TB on my server (UEFI supported) could i have OS C: (GPT) and DATA D: (GPT) where you have a OS C: (MBR) data D: (GPT). what are the benifits of me using GPT over MBR if the Boot volume is not going to be bigger than 2TB.... i was under the inpression i needed a Itanium based cpu aswell as running Itanium-server 2008 r2 to be able to boot from a gpt volume, even tho i have a UEFI supported MOBO thx for taking the time to answer my questions.
  18. Hi guys, please forgive me as im alittle confused. i have a dell server (r610) 6c xeon with 6 x 600gb discs in RAID5, -one lost to the RAID and -one as a hotswap/dormant drive giving me 2.4TB of storage. i installed server 08 r2 onto this server and disc manager reported alot of "unusable space" after alittle research it seems its because my volume exceeds 2TB. If i enable UEFI and reformat the discs to GPT will i be able to boot from this GPT volume or do i need a Itanium based system for that? or do i have to have a RAID1(MBR) for the OS and a RAID5(GPT) for the data volume? thx
  19. Hi guys, i getting a new switch (hp v1910-48g ex 3COM) that uses sfp mini-GBIC modules..... i am retiring my allied telesis switches that use the same modules..... can i use these in my new HP switch... or do i have to use the HP branded ones..... Sorry if this sounds like a newbie question. Just wanna save some money
  20. think we've cracked this now..... now using latest console and endpoint 10 we called sophos support who checked a few settings. we had download scanning off! once enabled it worked fine....
  21. just an update...... after restoring a pc in one of the suites.. it worked fine... did all the updates still fine..... updated to endpoint 10 and it started again...... removed it, was fine again...... reinstalled 9.5 works fine..... removed 9.5 and installed 10. and it stopped working again...... put 9.5 back on and its fine again! so looks to be sophos! still running the lastest console also......
  22. yeah i could just re-image a machine first thing tomorrow.... we use fog so thats not much of an issue.... prob is.... i know before i put fog inplace the computers were build 1 by 1 ! and some of the hardware doesn't have an image........ 45% of the site is about 240 pcs! still...... i was really hopin' i would never have to use "i told you so" in my place of work..... leason learnt...... could of been alit worse! thanks for all the help guys...... i reimage a infected suite tomorrow and report back! thx again
  23. OK i think this is my first post and i have dyslexia so please forgive any errors. i find it hard to get my point across sometimes but here goes.... oh and sorry for the long post; i think we have some big probs at oursite..... and i think this might just be the tip of the iceberg! for a few weeks now, the internet access drops for approx 3mins at 3 set times during the day. I've checked update/backup schedules and almost every bit of software installed in our site to see if something is floodin' the net. i couldn't see anything amiss. it happened today, so i check the firewall log to see if anything popped up in there..... i have reports saying computer X @ 10.15.x.x has exceded http requests and might be infected.blah blah blah..... at first i thought, cable, nic faulty. but the list of machines is as long as my arm...... so i think oh dear... we have a virus...... so i asked when the last sophos update was done and what the report reads... and 45% of the networks pcs are infected with; troj/userin-a vbs/autom-b vbs/malnir-a ...... now i'm very new to domains and large networks at a whole... so please forgive me if some of my wording is off. the sophos version we WERE on was 4.5 sophos console and endpoint 9.5 (i think might have that the wrong way around) with it being a virus issue i asked my boss if there was a newer version of sophos.... to which we found console 5 and endpoint 10..... both of which are NOW installed and fully updated.....after doing a scan on all the computers infected. the virus "SEEMS" to of been removed. however.... all the web broswers on all the computers on the network are now crashing ..... servers/clients on both domains the lot. Firefox/ie/safari . this didn't happen stright away some 3hrs after the sophos update...... it might just be coincidence that this is happening after a sophs update. but i really dont know where to start..... i tested all the broswers. firefox just crashes and gives a "oops error", ie just drops to the desktop, safari locks ups and google also gives the "oops" error. i thought sophos must be blocking something, so i disabled it breifly... but the same thing happened...... i had to use the 3g dongle to get online.... which worked fine on all broswers..... i even checked on a "suspected" infected pc. works fine. done a scan on all the servers all clean....... my head hurts now..... and im not looking forwards to tomorrow.... any ideas? thx in advance.
  24. thanks for all the info guys, to answer your question arther we're an XP site thx again guys
