As some of you maybe aware some search engines are easier to filter than others. we use Dans Guardian here and I'm having real problems filtering ask.com. couple of year 11 boys have now realised images are unfiltered.Not sure how much of a problem it is yet, only just been told about it or even if its just the images section which is the real problem or just part of it. for now its blocked until i get around to the finer details of what needs to be done about it, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to filter out even simple things like adult content on/off like googles safe search. Anyone got any ideas or already have some banned expressions/phrases i could steal from you? thanks Gaz

handheld metal detector is the only way scan them as they come in while your at it you might find the odd gun, pocket knife, screw driver depending on what type of school your in

we have had 6 Lacie drives heavily used for Imaging macs. our oldest 40GB drive is now 5 years old and has installed in the region of 1000 10-15GB disk images.In that time they've worked solidly during some of the hottest summer days. i would also go for something Bus powered with USB2.0 + Fw400 ports just so you have some flexibility if you need to use those usb ports (i would use FW400 personally) Lacie portable drives Not so portable

if i remember correctly the interface on facitlity can be made to look like sims or how ever you want it to look. never tried to change it though

the administrator (stupid name for it tbh) software goes on the clients. during the installation you will need to point it to the exam data share on the server. Make sure this share is setup correctly else you'll be left scratching your head when the software keeps telling you the path is invalid.

They should have got a better person to do the job then. running water/heating pipes above the server room was a great idea! don't these people realise the data held in these rooms are insanely important?!?!?! Designing the building(s) with everyone in mind is surely going to get the best results?

2 of our admin servers which update directly from microsoft had crashed last night around 3am the only 2 servers which were offline this morning were the only 2 that update directly from microsoft.

The quality issue...... This is a big issue for all manufactures of electrical equipment if they want to sell in the EU. Amazing how lead free solder + WEE has decreased general build quality of goods. Products are now being designed so that the manufacture can cheaply recover components for recycling. On this side of things Apples build quality is extremely high. Most of the materials are desirable and of high quality to be reusable in the future. I remember reading about how lead free solder has had a huge knock on effect on reliability of consumer electronics due to it being brittle compared to solder containing lead. Don't know if this has been overcome but was defiantly the case over a year ago. but gone are the days of hardware lasting 10 years!!!

If you have ZERO investment in mac kit then the double costs argument would be the right angle. One of the great advantages of having a multi platform network is it gives kids the skills to use a computer and not a GCSE in XP + Office 2003.

1) new iMacs didn't arrive in time! 2) Updated firmware on wireless access points over the summer, big mistake, every single one of them started locking up causing massive problems with registeration 3) Timetables all wrong so our new afternoon roll call (which is now teaching group not form group) is impossible to do. 4) loose fibre connection to the admin block which caused some fun! 5) Year 10 seems to have grown so much our class groups are now bigger than our IT suites 6) I forgot to turn on 1 of the new shares which hosts the Yr7 home folders much better than last year though, 4 hard drive failures in our OD Master AND Replica within 3 days was not fun to fix. oh and you'll laugh at how many people use the google bar to search for google!

I would put that down to experience. I've come from the other direction, with 7 years Mac experience and have had to deal with the ups and downs of Mac OS X Server from its initial release. Last summer we moved authentication from OD to AD to allow us to fully intergrate PC's into the network. 99% of mac problems i can fix pretty fast. but the 25% of computers which are Windows can be a real pain in the butt to fix. As GrumbleDook said having a mixed platform in schools gives students transferable skills. Also you wont believe how many staff ask if they can take their iBooks with them when they leave to another school. EDIT: forgot to say 26 are on order!
