  1. Call me stupid [yes, you may] but isn't it just the fan reaching its EOL [end of life]. Have you tried getting a replacement fan? Nath.
  2. Aye... but from what i read, you can do all sorts with it lol i.e. if the machine name isnt "amonkey" then dont apply this GP [or vice versa] I thought that sort of logic, amongst a whole host of stuff was possilble. I read that it will only apply the GPO if the resultant WMI reads true. But either way, its not important now :D Nath.
  3. It seems we have lift off!! Loopback Policy on the actual GPO where the user settings are held is working... even though the Group Policy Modelling says otherwise Thanks for the help guys. Nath
  4. Yeah... tried that [WMI filtering] yesterday... for some reason, it wouldnt work - tho I'm thinking that loopback policy might have a bearing on it. Gonna head on over to the music room to see whether anything has changed [no VNC on it yet lol ]. Nath
  5. lol Look at my screen shots... this is what I've got set. But the Group Policy Modeling tests paint a different picture... i.e.... a picture that says that it doesnt work lol Can we conclude that the Modellng system is flawed when it comes to certain things i wonder? :S I shall try it on the actual machine in a bit. Cheers Nath
  6. [btw What I scrubbed out is the servername and a hidden share] Not sure what u mean limbo... Basically, as u can see from the above screenshots, here's what i need: - Application Data & Desktop to point to a share on the local DC - My Documents to point to a different share on the local DC - Start Menu to point to a set Start Menu on the local DC With the exception of the Start Menu, all of those have %username% in them so each user is seperate of course. The above settings in the GP look fine geoff, but as u can see, the default staff user GPO is "winning"... but i dont see why. If a script is the best option, dont i need to tell the above settings the new location? Isn't that some sort of registry method and can I use %username% in it? Cheers Nath.
  7. If you have a script handy i can do it with then great... I only use batch scripts mainly though, so if its anything else, i need idiots guide for the time being @geoff [and all]: have a look at these attachments and see if there is something I am missing here... [are security permissions needing to be changed at all?]
  8. Geoff... were you refering to the setting in GP: Computer Config > System > Group Policy: User Group Policy loopback processing mode = Enabled Is this what you mean? I think a screenshot of the GP might be needed for you all here lol Basically, with that set, it makes no difference... using Group Policy Modelling tells me the same thing... that the winning GPO for Folder Redirection is the "Default Staff User" policy i have, not the GPO that I have placed in Computer OU for the Music Room [that is outside of the main computer OU's] that has the Folder Redirection set differently. That GPO is forced whereas all the other GPO's relating to Folder Redirection aren't. I so need this sorted... Any ideas? Nath.
  9. No. As they will end up having to use a profile over a wifi connection, and Cubase took at least 5 minutes to load lol @Geoff: Merging the topics wasnt working so just quoting what you said. Plus, thats already turned on.
  10. Hi all Bit of a mystery going on here so let me explain... [grab a cup of tea/coffee/beer and concentrate on this one folks lol] We have a suite of computers that are located in a seperate room [music room] from the rest of the school. The network link is a strong wifi link [i have another thread long ago about this - the wifi works fine... moving on...] between the two buildings and things work through it as they should. Now, I've put a replication DC from the cur server room to the music block and after trying with two lan cards to create a seperate range for the machines up there [in order to get them to logon to that server only] but just couldnt manage to get it running. The next thing I thought was to just scrap that idea - as time is short - and even if they log onto the server in the cur room [...any way I can make those clients log onto the DC in the music room btw?...] I could set group policy to point folder redirection to the server in the music room i.e. for profiles etc, along with a home dir on this server [needed for them to save the huge music files - which wouldnt be very fun over wifi now ]. Been trying this part of the week and with the assistance of my replacement, we just cant get it to work :( What our issue is is how to ONLY get a select group of computers i.e. music room computers to point to alterative set of folder redirection on a different server?? We tried using a WMI filter and triple-checked the settings of it... makes no difference. The problem is that we need to tell the system via GP that when a user logs onto a computer in the music room to change the folder redirection to the server in the music room, but not when anywhere else... Anyone have any ideas? as we are running low on them cheers Nath
  11. Maybe i was a little unclear but what I meant was that after reconnecting to the network after being offline, when you log on, the above in my previous post happens. Obviously, you wouldnt expect the logon script to work when you arent connected because it isn't "there" lol Nath.
  12. Well... we managed to get it to work - god knows how.. it just started working after some fiddling. We spent most the day on it, so we pretty much know every setting in that section on the GP. The only real problem we have is that when logging on to the network after working offline and have made changes to a document, the system decides to not complete the login script [i.e. no mapped network drives except for the H drive which is the one being sync'd] and then it "requests permission" to reconnect & to close any programs open, so that it can sync, even though its already connected and when clicking OK, it sync's - but the problem is of course that the user has to log off and back on again to access the mapped drives. Couldnt find anything noticeable in the event log either Anyone seen this or have any ideas? So close the teacher laptop's solution we can taste it lol Cheers Nath.
  13. Anyone got an example of their setup for laptop's with the use of Offline Files? [i.e. a exported GP would be handy ] Been trying to set it up and going nowhere fast for some reason. It currently fails and stops when it cant sync certain types, but cant figure out why it stops the sync'ing process. Cheers Nath

    Virus Question

Hi there, and welcome to the forum... A bit of reseach [yes... google] led me to believe that you havent stated the filenames correctly, which then led me to here: http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2767&view=next While that doesnt give u the full answer, it may help you a little. I have modified the original post to reflect what the filenames should be... If i am wrong of course, please let me know or edit your post and change them back. You may need to go into Safe Mode to delete them, or use a live CD to remove the files in question, when cleaning and AV tools cant help. Regards Nath.
  15. @norphy: Have you tried adding the usual get around for MSIs like that to see if it works? Not got the details to hand, but it involves either editing the msi or creating a transform that will add the PROPERTY of ISSETUPDRIVEN with the value of 1 [the exact property name may not be correct - been a while since i've done it at work... grab me on msn later if u like. Dont have CS3 alas, or I'd try it myself] Nath.
  16. I'll start playing it again no doubt in a few months time - once i've started my new job and stuff... I shall look u up [hope my username still exists hehe] Nath.
  17. Topic now merged with the sticky'd one
  18. Closing this topic... please use one of the other threads [suggested by Geoff] to continue discussing this issue. Regards Nath.
  19. If i remember, I'll suggest it to the guy that follows me What I might do if i get time is to setup an old server as a proxy box for this very purpose, and place any pupils misusing the net on it, so that they get filtered even more / only have certain sites they can access. I wager that I wont have time to do it before i leave, but surprises do happen dont they? Nath
  20. Although our pupils dont create swf files for work, the staff do use some sites that use flash, or i would have blocked it in my local hardware firewall ages ago. *sighs* Nath.
  21. Oh great.... now for some weird reason, people can't access their local My Documents anymore. Just gives them a restricted access message. How on earth can that have happened? Its like this system does what it wants sometimes Anyone have any ideas? Of couse, this is only happening on laptops AFAIK :( Someone want to kill me now? Nath.
  22. Have you tried ringing Pinnacle to ask them? No doubt they wont be able to help you for all manner of reasons, but i'll be suitably impressed if they do Nath.
  23. It was a new feature in 2003 R2. so no, it wasn't possible previously. Nath.
  24. The patch will likely cure it. Probably a "oh...we didnt think anyone without admin rights would want to use the product" type thing that soooo many manufacturers seems to blissfully forget, dispite how long 2K / XP / etc, has been out for lol Nath.
  25. Media Player Classic here also [where PowerDVD hasnt come with the computer / DVD drive]. Plays nearly everything thrown at it. Nath.
