Having an issue with remote desktop on a windows xp machine... Recently reinstalled Windows on the machine, reconfigured remote desktop and it was all working fine. Then ~Tuesday 2 weeks ago it just stopped. I haven't made any changes to any of the settings. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) 7, however the settings have not been changed (tried disabling the program completely and still can't connect). The same KIS settings work on another PC in the house, and i can connect to it just fine. The router is forwarding ports properly, as if i change the detination IP i can connect to every other computer in the house... i can't connect to the PC from the internal network either... When i try to connect, it doesn't give any errors, it just starts to try and then goes back to the "enter computer name" type screen... Any ideas?

We use the NT Backup to backup system state for AD and Exchange, and then just robocopy for files. We then have one server in a (mostly) concrete room (which is also in a different building to everything else) as an on-site backup server which has daily and weekly backups. We then have two external drives which run a separate backup and are rotated each week. We look at it as three levels of backup: 1) shadowcopies on all servers 2) on-site backup to the backup server 3) weekly off-site external hard drives Haven't had any problems in the 2 1/2 years i've been working there.

During the recent school holidays we changed our IP address range from an internal range (172.16.0.0/16) to a NSW (Australia) Department of Education and Training range (10.18.144.0/22). The servers were rolled over, and then the DHCP range updated to match (including dns servers and the like). However now we're having a problem where DNS aliases set on our internal server are not being identified by the workstations. They get a correct IP address from the pool, and the correct DNS server details in the configuration, however will not resolve internal dns aliases unless you run "ipconfig /registerdns". While we can run this as a logon script, once the PC has been on for a while the workstations go back to not resolving the addresses unless you run the "ipconfig /registerdns" again. Any ideas?

I think any form of physical activity is great for unwinding... even just a session at the gym or a run around the block a few times... I've got problems with my neck, so get regular migraines/headaches... too much slouching and bad posture... unfortunately working in schools isn't the most ergonomically correct environment, so its not getting much better quickly... doing stretches and stuff regularly which seems to be helping...

Found a hand-written "love letter" folded up and poked into a floppy drive once... wasn't too bad an effort either... seemed the recepient didn't agree... the only real times the drives are used is when we image them, so didn't really bother trying to figure out who it was from/to...

Well i'd show you the best install i've seen, but its no longer there... the mount came un-bolted from the ceiling, ripped the cabling out of the ducting and landed projector-first on the floor (we suspect it hit a desk on the way down). Fortunately it was during school hols, so it didn't land on anyone... the company who installed it have arranged for it to be repaired (only the casing was broken, turned out the projector still worked) and then they will "try again"... (of course this is the same company who, while drilling through a concrete slab between levels, managed to hit a hot-water pipe and flood the PDHPE staffroom)

Confusingly enough, it seemed to be specific to one document... and on top of that specific to the text that was there.... when copying it from word to notepad, it wasn't identifying the characters properly... retyped it out and pasted it back into the document and that seemed to fix it :confused:

There are approximately 90 machines the same, running the same image... and she is the only one having the problem... i've been using Office 2k7 on my home pc and work laptop for a while now and haven't seen this problem before either...

Well you know how when you are typing in word (or most programs actually), normally you get to the end of the margin and if the word doesn't fit on that line the whole word drops down to the next line... instead, whats happening is the characters that don't fit are dropping down to the next line, if its in the middle of a word or not... it does the same thing no matter if the text is aligned left/centre/right or justified... and its not actually hyphenating the words when it splits them... (thanks Michael and Rush_Tech for the suggestions tho)

I used to work in the bar in a local restaurant and there were quite a few staff who went to the local high school... often after work go to someone's house and have a few drinks or hang out at the local 24-hr McDonalds until the small hours of the morning and stuff like that... being one of the older staff, i usually ended up designated driver and stuff, and frequently dropped my drunken under-age co-workers home.. I then later landed a job at the aforementioned local high school... fortunately all my former co-workers understood that i had to have a certain level of professionalism in the new job, so while at school our relationships consisted of saying hello if we passed in a corridor... My other half used to coach a junior netball team, so having a couple of her players going to the school was the main source of issues.... hearing the giggle of "thats my netball coach's boyfriend" whenever i'd walk past... one of them pushed the line a bit, making references to my girlfriend and stuff but after explaining the situation to my supervisor action was taken and it quietened down after that...

One school i work at is running a trial where students buy their own laptops. One student has brought hers in due to having an issue in Word 2007. Its probably a really simple thing to fix, but i can't find the solution. When she types text, its not keeping words together when they reach the end of the line, rather splitting words as she types. There has to be a setting for it somewhere, but after 20mins seaching Word's help files, can't find anything

There is another little app, Colasoft Mac Scanner that does the same sorta thing... version 1 is freeware and looks up MAC/IP addresses, hostnames and NIC vendors... version 2 does more stuff but isn't free....

Its a bit convoluted, but i create a Net Boot Disk and then use a program called Flashboot to make it into a bootable USB drive. Alternatively, the Boot Disk can be burnt to CD. You can even add ghost.exe or a batch file interface for directly imaging PCs.

At the main school i work at, we have 1:1 computers:staff and approx 1:8 computers:students... although our new govenment has proposed "a pc for every yr9-yr12 student" so we're waiting to see how that is going to affect things

I very much believe that there is a time and a place for everything, and that includes OSes... So many people believe that Windows is only ever going to be the way to go, and Linux is just a fad... other people are the other way... but ultimately they all have strengths and weaknesses... personally i wouldn't run linux on my desktop, but have found it great as a file/web server... Recently i had to build a PC for my girlfriend's family and when choosing between Xp and Vista, i ended up putting vista home premium on it because its only used for the "basics": schoolwork, msn and internet.... After a motherboard failure i had to rebuild my desktop, i bought a copy of vista ultimate oem at the time, but stuck with XP... my work laptop is set up to dual boot xp/vista business, however i just use vista mainly to force myself to use it... as much as i could run a virtual pc on my desktop at home, i wouldn't bother enough, whereas now i'm getting to know it for if/when i need to... I preferred Windows 2000 over XP, but eventually it became easier (well after a HDD crash) to just move to XP (by that point XP SP2 had been out for a while), and eventually that point will come with Vista...

We turned some old "Win98-class" PCs into terminal clients. Cut the Win98 OS down so it was basically just a desktop, then set in the system.ini to run mstsc.exe instead of explorer.exe on bootup, with a script to restart it if it closes and to force it to use a specific rdp file for the settings. In the end it was a ~150mb ghost image, which was easily deployed... the main downside is the lack of drivers for Win98 (specifically USB drives) but other than that it worked pretty well. 2X was another method of achieving the same idea
