  1. how about setting up a forum devoted to 'teacher bashing'. (i don't mean that literally - at least, i think i don't...)
  2. somebody 'retire' this topic please.
  3. there is nothing wrong with sophos per se - but it is over-rated and there are better ant-virus installs out there: essest's nod32 in particular is outstanding (i use it in all of my schools).
  4. *just to add when i say they went for win 95 clients, this was over 8rs ago.
  5. against my [sound] advice, a school i no longer work in [thankfully] went for viglen classlink win95 clients - absolute dross, complete waste of money [close to 50k]. funny peculiar me thinks: as an IT engineer you dole out your advice ['don't go for viglen']; the school rebuts your advice; school regrets not having taken your advice after wasting 50K; IT engineer gets the blame; head and IT co-ordinator who both initially praised the system get away with murder. funny? no. peculiar? yes. oh to be a teacher and do nothing all day...what fun.
  6. anybody for nsoptimum? rm's brothers in arms?
  7. RM? you really want to know? charlatans; incompetents [writ large]; inexcusable; pathetic; useless; outdated; over-priced [wayyy over priced]; pure marketing; oh, but all their 'engineers' [i bite my lip when i use such a title] always wear a tie on their visits - charming! [another company who all of this can apply to is NS Optimum - they are supposedly in 'competition' with RM, but i actually think they would get on fabulously with each other].
  8. mark, i've been down that road before, and am now virtually skidding off it. myself? maintaining two thousand pcs by myself in four schools; the IT co-ordinator buying any old c*** she chooses; she getting paid far more than me because she now carries a 'responsibilty' point (some 'responsibility' spending the money on redundant equipment); teachers complaining to me about her but there is nothing i can do about it/her...go figure...
  9. teacher to IT engineer: "why are the computers not working today?" IT engineer to teacher: "more to the point, why are *you* not working today [or any other day for that]?" too harsh??
  10. glad you have 'killed' the themes - everything back to normal now - well almost...

cheers bazm, and cheers chrish for clarifying - i've got it now you're both stars!
  13. http://www.nec-online.co.uk/product/p_products.asp?Id_ProDis=3591 i use an nec-Select TW100, very reliable, very good value for money. Dell poweredge servers are also very reliable (but don't touch their workstations). hp servers are over-rated in my opinion and annoyingly noisy.

"then you create a group in each domain with the opposite domains user." sorry for being so daft but i don't understand this bit i have quoted - could you explain again if you don't mind thanks, and sorry..
  15. "Please let them know what you think" - already have. enjoy my post everyone. not too harsh i hope?? http://www.tes.co.uk/section/staffroom/thread.aspx?messagePage=13&path=%2fict%2f&story_id=2138547
  16. "I'm asking as me and the caretaker are being asked to do this - he's on ~11k and I'm on ~13.2k." retain some dignity and tell them to shove it up the proverbial, for that kind of appaling money - unless they want to double your pay quicktime. This is the point i've been making all along - schools are just using people like you and me and paying us a pittance. tell them to shove it, that's what i say.13K?? any teachers out there living on that? thought not...
  17. teachers would say to me when the bulb died 3 months in "how much for a bulb! 300 quid? for a bulb!" yes, because you never bothered turning the projector off.
  18. Kyocera Mita FS-C5020N has replaced the earlier model, and now comes with additional ram (128) for £850.
  19. Kyocera Mita FS-C5016N about £1200 network ready, exceptional output, very speedy too or Epson AcuLaser C2600N about £500 network ready, not as speedy as the kyocera but still above average quality - i have one in my network at school and it does the job admirably.
  20. ATX keyboads? serial mice? parallel port scanners?
