Hello, Just thought I should post an overview about the work environment here: Generally, we mainly run an AD-based Windows network, however we also run Apple’s Open Directory to handle the logins on the imac and macbook clients. This simply replicates the user accounts from AD; such that users can login with the same credentials as on the Windows side. With regards to server infrastructure, we’ve got 15 servers with eight running Windows 2008, five running Windows 2003, one running Ubuntu Linux and other one is the Apple Xserve running the mac server OS. The usual IT services run on these platforms. We are currently looking to implement SANs and Virtualisation. In terms of backup systems, at the moment, we’ve got HP StorageWorks G2 Autoloader unit, Tandberg StorageLoader unit, HP DAT72 unit and 1TB external HDD to cover the backup schedules. On the client side, in total we’ve got 650 desktop PCs; 190 of this are installed in 6 IT suites running Windows 7 and Office 2010. The rest of the PCs are located across the site, in offices, other subject specific computer rooms and staff areas; these are a mixture of Windows XP and 7 but all with Office 2010 installed. Furthermore, currently we’ve got networked Apple iMacs, networked macbooks, iPad, iTouch, e-readers and Kindle Touch. Furthermore, in the classrooms there are, SmartBoards, Promethean IWB boards and projectors installed; about 50% of these are the LED types. Most of our printers are networked, usually 1 in each classroom where there are at least 5 computers or there is a specific need for it. Otherwise the PCs are linked to our managed Sharp multifunction copiers fitted with a card reader, located in convenient locations on site. Overall, the network has been upgraded in recent years to Gigabit Ethernet; and 11 x Gigabit speed fibre channels to various locations across the site. We also run a recently installed managed wireless network platform. In terms of school size, we’ve got about 150 staff members and 1400 students. Feel free to ask me further questions you may have. Hi All, Strange problem here which I think is a problem with Snow Leopard. We've just got some new imacs running Snow Leopard (10.6.4) to join our magic triangle of existing Leopard (10.5.8) imacs that are bound to both the Mac Server (OD) and Windows Domain (AD) - this means users can login at the imacs using their AD accounts. However, we've just noticed after prepping the new imacs (10.6.4) that each time we reboot, the login LED changes from RED to AMBER with the message 'Some network accounts are unavailable' and stays here without going to GREEN. To get past, I have to login as the local admin, then unbind and re-bind to the AD domain, then it works until the next reboot. Then I went to Apple Support to have a look and I was surprised to find other people having similar issues, click here to read the Apple Support thread. I have to say our existing 10.5.8 runs without problems and connects to AD and OD flawlessly. Just wondered if anyone here is experiencing this problem as well and if they have managed to solve it? Thanks. Forgot to mention that we installed the latest updates from Apple but the problem persists.

The server *should* be fine after the demotion but would like to re-echo Vikpaw's advice - speak to Capita or Local Support before the move, that way you've got your back covered should it have unexpected results.

Hello Yacapaca, We are currently experiencing problems using your web based test. The following error message prompts when two or more students try to use the service - 'Flash has detected a problem on the network. Please check your internet connection has it appears to be running very slowly'. I have to say our internet connection is a 100mb link and with a class of 30 trying to use Yacapaca, it only utilised 13% of this bandwidth, so hardly a bottle neck issue. Please find attached a screenshot of the error message. We have tried in different classrooms and computers but still same result.

Just a quick question please: Is there a way to change the Localization Region to the 'United Kingdom' in the 'Formats' tab within the 'International' window in System Preferences on all my 30 imacs managed with an Xserve? At the moment, it's set to 'United States', I was thinking I could edit a plist and roll this out across to the imacs using Remote Desktop. Any ideas from anyone please? Thanks.

Just had a look at SNARE for Windows: http://www.intersectalliance.com/projects/SnareWindows/events.png The quote for the entry level server supporting upto 50 agents came up to £7k ish (£6k ish for the licence and £1k ish for the annual licence). Can't seem to get hold of a freeware that does this.

Basically, I'm after an application or tool that will monitor the Event Logs on my Windows Servers (2003 and 2008), collate all error and non-error logs into a single view such that I can see them all within this application instead of looking through all my servers individually. We use ARCHIWARE | PresSTORE Archive - Overview and it seems capable to handle the points you mentioned. The hardware that does the backup is the Tandberg Data Storage, uses the 1.6TB x 8 Tapes, so technically you can setup 6 Full Backups over six weeks, say every friday and 2 Incrementals to run alternately from Mon - Thursday, works for us.

Hi Paul, Once you've created your desired image on one of the imacs, you'll need to take an image or snapshot of this imac, this file will have a .dmg extension, e.g yourimage.dmg The way I go about this is to create a sizeable partition on the actual imac using Disk Utility then dump this image on the newly created partition, from there you can then transfer your image to the Netboot image directory on the OSX Server. (i.e. Volumes/Storage/Library/NetBoot/NetBootClients0). Reading through the setup instructions of Deploystudio, it will guide you on how to install it on the server and creating your .nbi file etc. Once all this is all set up and ticking nicely, you can then go the 19 imacs, depending on your network bandwidth, start them up in turn then hold down N key to make the imac boot from LAN (a spinning globe will appear during this process followed by the spinning gear) and discover the Deploystudio server, enter the login credentials and it will present the Workflow(s) you have earlier created when setting it up on the server, select the desired one, click 'play' and Bob's your uncle. On my network I can successfully re-image about 8 imacs simultaneously. Let me know if you require further info.

We went the way of DeployStudio a few weeks ago when we imaged 28 iMacs, easy to setup if you've got OSX Server 10.5 to manage the clients. You can view info about DeployStudio here: DeployStudio - It's a freeware! Additionally, if you fancy having a screen presented to your users to make a choice between the OSX and XP when the imac boots up, then try using Bootpicker, more info here: Apple - Education - IT Professionals - BootPicker Otherwise users will have to hold down the option key to select a desired partition or OS. Thanks for your prompt response. The share and NTFS permissions on the SYSVOL folder is as follows; SHARES Admin - Full control Auth. Users - Full control Everyone - Read NTFS Admin - Full control Creator Owner - Full control Everyone - Modify System - Full control Users - Read & Execute, List Folders and Read. On the NETLOGON is as follows; SHARES Admin - Full control Everyone - Read NTFS All permissions here inherited from the SYSVOL folder above. I'll appreciate if you can suggest a better alternative to these, we've got a global security group defined for each type of user in AD if that will help. Thanks.

Hello, I wonder if someone can help me. We've just installed the Xserve and a couple of iMacs. The iMacs were bound to Open and Active Directories such that users can use their Windows logon account to get authenticated on the iMacs, all properly locked down just like on the PCs. However in Simple Finder in OS X, there is a link to Network where users can browse the list of all PCs and Servers along with Shared Folders on them, as such the SYSVOL and NETLOGON folders are visible as shares on the DCs. This network link becomes visible when users open up the 'Storage Area' used for storing common files for users. I just wondered if there's a way to hide such shares from users' view? The SYSVOL and NETLOGON folders have got the default permissions on, which is Everyone - Modify, can this be altered without screwing up the DCs? Probably define the User group to have READ ONLY access? Really confused about this, just hope someone will help out. Thanks.

Just wondered if anyone has any experience of this. I'm in the process of buying a used car for an uncle who lives in Dublin, apparently cars are more cheaper here in Blighty. My question is, in order to ship the car, can I just use the New Keepers V5C Supplement slip supplied by the seller (private sale) to ship the car over OR do I have to wait for the new keepers log book V5C to come back from DVLA, which can take about 4 weeks before attempting to ship. What documents are generally required before shipping can be done? How do i go about shipping the car? Any approx. quote for this? This will be a permanent export. Thanks for your help in advance.

The LEA currently supplies my school with a 10MB Internet Connection which comes in via a Firewall which I haven't got access to. The gateway interface address on this Firewall is local to my hosts so it's used as the Default Gateway Address. The LEA remotely logs into do SIMS upgrade and maintenance etc when the need arises. At the moment I use logmein for remote access. I just wondered if there's a way I can 'install' my firewall as we are thinking of rolling out Remote Access via Terminal Services to 'selected' staff - I'm thinking along the lines of having our own VPN. Any ideas please? Thanks.
