  1. Cheers!
  2. Can you use an xp machine or does it have to be server 2003? Have looked at the link and fell at the first hurdle!
  3. Got my (well alright the school's) new xp computers coming next week! Reading about wsus as I'll have a few left over pc's to play with cOuld anyone talk me through in simple terms how set up a wsus server? Thanks
  4. Should we be regularly looking for 'inappropriate material' on our networks and staff laptops? If so how? Because I work in a junior school I would expect that I'm unlikely to come across anything more extreme than a picture of a scantily clad female from a year 6 boy with developing hormones.
  5. Nice to see more females joining, Andie your job sounds so similar to mine I almost thought it was me posting! This board is brill for advice, also I've found myself getting moist eyes at the 'I'm a new Dad, sleepless nights' postings recently (must be my age) I'm still looking for postings about I'm a 'mum of teenagers, they wake you up when they come home' postings so I can join in with them!

    samsung printer

Made final choice of Samsung clp550n for primary school, typical now out of stock, but notice that the 550 is still available. The 550 has no network card but a print server is realtively cheap, would we notice any differnece using a print server rather than a printer with a nic? I've looked at so many printers, worked out the cost of consumables, we need duplex etc all for under £350! Samsung 550n was my first choice with lexmark c532 dn second, minolta 2550 third. Anyone got any of these are they any good?
  7. I can set the default profile in one of my schools (we use mandatory profiles) but in the other we use GPO so is there a setting or an addon to use. I like the idea of banning the preference page.
  8. We have a page with links to children's search engines, google safe search (which the pupils know they have to use to search google) and a couple of links to websites that are used alot eg BBC revisewise. I put the google safe search on because I couldn't work out a way to ensure google preferences were kept for each user, if anyone else has done this I be interested to know how!
  9. Merry xmas and thanks for all the helpful suggestions and advice I've received and picked up by reading posts thru the year. Cheers!
  10. this happened on one of our laptops, after googling I uninstalled google toolbar and pop up blocker, error stopped not reappeared.
  11. I decided to use xcopy rather than offline and synchronising files because it seemed simpler, also if a teacher has personal letters etc on their laptop they have the choice of not backing them up to the file server but keeping them in 'my docs'. I'm going to implement it at the other primary that I work at when I feel mentally strong enough!
  12. Well - I set up teacher's laptops with a folder in 'my docs' called backup, an equilalent folder in their home drive on the server, a batch file to click on their desktop, very easy to understand instructions. Any work they don't want to lose save to the backup folder, no music or hol snaps. The result? Moans and groans akin to making a 6 year old eat a brussel sprout, all but one teacher made me feel a pain in the a**e. No thankyous and definately no xmas pressies unlike the TA's who went home more wine than someone who had ram raided the local off licence!
  13. I think it looks more suited to a secondary school. from the picture in the paper the monitor screens could hinder the view of both pupil and teacher. Also if it is to be used as a classroom there doesn't seem to be much chance of verbal interaction between staff and pupils and unfortunately in this day and age this is becoming more important. However, as an ICT suite it looks great, sets the scene for pupils to work in rather than a converted classroom with 15 pcs between 32 pupils!
  14. We had this with Nt server, never worked as a server install, I got round it by installing as standalone on each machine, a pain but the only way we could get it to work.

    motherboard dead?

Emailed local pc shop their suggestion of suitable replacement was £40, the processor is only a celeron 1.8, so if she's going to have to pay that much for a replacement board she may as well have a new m/board and faster processor for not much more. The ram is 2100 so might be ok. What would happen if she carried on using the computer without repair I know it will fail but in a spectatular flames way or just a quiet sort of death?

    motherboard dead?

I think it's about 5 years old, trouble is it's a single Mum, no spare cash to upgrade. I've looked on ebay but always think motherboards from there aren't that cheap for what they are. Im going to take it to my local computer shop and see what they've got. Is it safe to carry on using it til she can save up for a new one?
  17. Looking at friend's computer to try to solve random booting probs, after trying all os, virus, spyware etc, found time this weekend for 'proper' look and find leaking capacitors on m/board. Not worth trying to find someone to mend it is it? Not come across this before but assume I've found the cause.
  18. Are there two threads the same? I had this problem with a laptop, googled it and found google pop up blocker and toolbar to be a possible culprit. Uninstalled it no further probs.
  19. I had this on a laptop, googled, found a ref to google pop up blocker, which I then uninstalled. No more error messages.
  20. Do you mean the samsung cpl 600 I thought it seemed abit flimsy. It is hard wearing?
  21. What are the 2600's like for photos, we're looking for a replacement for a magicolor 2300dl which we use for photos for displays, print quality pretty good. I've looked at the magicolor 2550 with duplexer but am also taken by the HP printers, but the dpi is less than the one we've got.
  22. Right with it now, sorry for being so thick, it will be running from a fused spur but now I realise you can get rewireable connectors to change from one type of connector to another. With the company telling me it had to be a moulded connector I got the impression that once the cable is in thats it, but I can see now with a rewireable connector all is not lost. Cheers. It's been a long term!
  23. Electricians coming next week, we are having smartboards and fixed projectors fitted soon, the caretaker isn't allowed to do electrical work we have to have 'tradesmen' in. Whats struck me though is that the company we're dealing with are supplying epson projectors throughout, so the wiring will be specific for epson projectors ie figure of eight connectors, so if we decide 3 years down the line to opt for another make that uses the three pin kettle plug, we'll need rewiring again! Do you all do your own electrics or do you, like me have to get people in? I thought there were so many regs etc that you have to be up to speed on that only 'electricians' have to do anything that's more involved than changing a fuse.
  24. Sorry lost the plot here a bit, the old fixed projector has a kettle type socket on a cable that runs up the wall through the ceiling and down a pole. The new projector that is to be fixed to the old installation has a figure of eight socket, the company that supplied it said we would need a new cable running to a hard wired socket. If I could get a projector with a kettle lead then maybe our electrician could just rewire the current cable so it is hard wired and not just plugged into a socket. I'm just a plain and simple technician that doesn't do cutting wires and adding sockets! Also I'm female.
  25. Old projector kettle type lead - new epson projector figure of eight lead. Are there any current projectors that still have kettle leads? This one was recommended to us, which would be fine if it was for a new installation.
