  1. It looks like an ordinary computer kettle type connector to me, but it isn't moulded. I haven't got the new projector out the box yet (we're using it as a mobile til all this is sorted) so I'll know more at the end of the day. Looks like the new one is security coded and will only work with a remote so now have find somewhere to tie it to! Things like that disappear in our school and it's not the children!
  2. Yes I thought it would be as easy as new projector poss new bracket to fix on end of pole. But the projector mains cable isn't 'hard wired'? it just plugs in an ordinary socket and the adaptor at the end of the cable that goes through the ceiling and down the pole isn't moulded and apparently won't fit the new projector. I trust the company that are giving the advise but just wish everything wasn't so complicated.
  3. Why is nothing easy? The bulb went in our fixed projector and was out of stock everywhere, so we decided to order a replacement projector, then found out that because our old projector was fitted five years ago the wiring and cables are not up to todays regs and we now need asbestos and structural surveys and new electrics to install the new projector. Is it just me or does this happen everywhere?
  4. thanks for the help, the data cabinet is full with no space for a bigger one or an additional one, also if the existing cable is to be used no need for disruption to ceiling between suite and data cabinet room, especially in the recently painted reception area with those white ceiling tiles that break as soon as you touch them! So we thought it easier to put it in the suite. It was just a last minute panic on my behalf in case the cat5e wasn't good enough and we hadn't made provision to rectify it. I've spoken with the electrical company that are doing the network cables, they are going to check the existing cable and install a switch that is fibre optic capable just in case, also they have a 'friendly' company that they use to do fibre optic. So if we do need fibre optic we have it done.
  5. Sorry when you say copper you mean the existing cat5? There are no generators it's just through the inside of school via the ceiling.
  6. I have had contractors into school for quotes for network sockets and installing a switch for 6 extra pcs. One contractor said that the switch should be connected to the main data cabinet (approx 25m away) by fibre optic, another said he would use an existing cat5e cable because we wouldn't notice any difference in performance. We are only having 6 extra pcs, we don't use roaming profiles - we use group policy, no video etc, would there be donwgrade in performance?
  7. They all have memory sticks, but as most of pcs (until the new year) are w98 transferring via memory stick is more trouble than it's worth. I'm looking to make their 'backups' as effortless as possible which is why I thought of the backup batch file, they connect to the network all day at school to enable them to print, which they do in vast quantities If the offline files cache for the current user I could see a situation where the teacher isn't the last person to logon to the network on that laptop before they take it home for the night, or have I got the wrong end of the stick with offline caching?
  8. Sorry if this in the wrong area, or has been discussed before. Most of our teachers now have laptops which are networked with a local admin account to access at home if necessary. However, until now I have stressed that it is their responsibility to save work they can't afford to lose to the appropriate place on the server. Ha ha! I haven't set offline caching because a) don't really know enough about it, but have read articles that there are probs if the laptop is used by various users - ours are. b) don't want teachers to be faced with this file is newer which do you want c) Don't want all the crap from my docs on the server - hol snaps etc So I thought maybe a folder in their my docs that they save can't lose work to, then a batch file to copy that to their home drive, either scheduled or they click on and it runs. What do other schools do?
  9. Send the bill to the little darling's parents/carer, if you know who it is, that is. I know that doesn't solve the fujitsu' 'lets stitch the customer up' situation, it might also be worth while letting fujitsu know how many of their laptops you have bought off them and that you may use dell or whoever for that large order of equipment you are currently putting together.

    nec powermate

quotes coming in thick and fast for new pcs, quite like the look of nec powermate ml450, micro tower. Anyone got any are they reliable/worth the money etc. Will I struggle to get parts when warrenty period over, do they have standard issue psu's fitted?
  11. 2003 server, I'd already looked at that page during a google search but didn't really see anything to explain why it happens. It only takes a minute to rejoin it to the domain it's just frustrating for the laptop user as they have to wait for me to sort it out. When we get back after half term I'm going to spend one of my visits closely inspecting the three laptops to see if I get to the bottom of it.
  12. Popped into school today to check server's event viewer, couldn't do it yesterday, group of teachers having stroppy meeting in server room! The error shown is event 5722 the session setup failed to authenticate etc. Access is denied.
  13. no straight off the shelf,
  14. no, added to domain, installed sophos, installed selected software, logged the users on a desktop pc first to set up their roaming profile then logged them on to laptop to check proxy settings and printers ok.
  15. None of our users save to 'my docs' but to their drive on network, but ... teachers save onto their laptops at home then save anything they can't afford to lose to their network share (in theory), so if this was applied to all users via gpo would their docs be deleted as well?
  16. sorry really silly question here but would deleting the local profiles delete all in that profile's 'my documents'?
  17. It's a wired network, no wireless. We had three of these laptops at the same time it's only happening to two of them. Because it's a school I only work in twice a week and then only for a few hours a time it's sometimes difficult to get to the root of the problem, at my other school I'm there four consecuative days it's easier to get access to teacher's laptops. After I've rejoined it to the network it works fine I test it for various logons, no problem, hand it back to teacher next time I see them can't logon again. They're not using the laptop on the internet at home so no change of ip settings there.
  18. when laptops are added to the domain they are visible in active directory, I've checked all dns settings. When the laptop refuses to logon to network and the only way to access the laptop is logon on locally ipconfig/all shows exactly the same settings as if it was logged onto network, ip address from range, dns server etc. Checked all poss 'simple' reasons for not logging on ie to network not this computer, number lock off etc. Only firewall is xp tried it with on and off no difference.
  19. Two new laptops added to domain no problem all settings applied from roaming profiles. 2 days later teacher can't logon to domain, neither can I so readd laptop to domain, check all dns configurations, firewalls etc. Next week laptop can't logon again. The teachers in question do have the facility to logon locally to install printers and seem to get confused on which logon to use. Is it possible that their local profiles aren't unloading properly so they then can't logon to the domain. I've installed the MS hive cleaner and changed the autoenrollment setting in the local policy editor. Any ideas?

    New computers

Has my post been hijacked by the thin v fat client discussion? I only want to know if anyone has brought decent branded or unbranded computers recently. I could build my own but as there's only me as part time technical support I haven't got the time neither would I be paid overtime.

    New computers

OR what about a wireless access point and have my new 5 pcs wireless enables This would mean no asbestos checks for furking about in ceilings and walls, also enable teachers laptops to be used wirelessly.

    New computers

Not sure wether this is enough info 3 switches in data cabinet in same room as server. cabling seems to run throughout school (internal only) through ceilings and trunking, arriving at patch panels in data cabinet. there are 12 classrooms, 4 yearbases totalling 20 network points, 2 in the teacherbase, 4 in the office and 20 in the suite. The cables for the suite seem to be run through the ceiling and then separated into two runs of trunking at the doorway. I was thinking that at the point the cables appear use one cable for an additional switch to provide extra network points for additional computers in the suite (plus provision for extra in the future) or to use the new switch for all the network points in the suite. Sorry not good at cabling and stuff!

    New computers

cheers for the replies, I've no intention of bulding my own computers I'm just trying to decide between local supplier of unbranded verus national supplier of branded. We are looking for small towers and I don't want to end up 4 years down the line with having to order a special PSU from Dell or where ever at a monster cost and a 5 week wait! The way the suite and the school were cabled for network is beyond belief, (it was like that when I got there!) just enough network sockets in the suite for current amount of computers, one socket in each classroom. I was thinking that it would be better to set up a switch in the suite for all the current computers plus extra, than to run mass cables from the current switches across the other side of school for the extra network sockets that we now need in the suite. I'm not capable of doing it myself but am looking for good ideas before I make an arse of myself infront of the electrician! Can a new switch be connected to the other switches across school using one of the network cables that already run through to the suite from the switch room?
