  1. For local printers you will be fine, they will appear as normal. For the networked printers, we add all ours to the mandatory profile. Then use a script to specify the default printer based on the PCs name e.g. ICT05PCXX will be mapped to printer ICT05_CLR There's another way using Printer Management that I'm sure someone will tell you about.
  2. Not found it in any of our sims folders
  3. I'm doing the Win 7 check too. Try: "Error 1720" when installing Easiteach® V3 on Microsoft® Windows® Vista
  4. We have 82 of these - the 610's, bough from Dan last year. Nice units, not had any issues with any of them in 6 months.
  5. When I was at uni living in a shared house, the TV licensing people wanted a licence per lockable room - even if the address for all tenants was the same. So it looks like this is what they've done with the inmates. I guess now if students don't have a telly and just use iplayer and the like, they are still required to buy a licence. However it will be harder for them to prove I'll bet.
  6. Noticed this in our local press: ICT-A/V Technician (West Yorkshire) Job Evaluation Pending Scale 4 - £17,161-£19,126 37 Hours per week, full time Closing date Thurs 25th Feb 2010 More details at: Website

  7. You can get a school version of ejay from here: Dance eJay for Schools : Music It installs much better on networked PCs - no need for CDs. Also available on site licences.
  8. Snap, doing T215 too!
  9. Might be interested for our laptops - we already encrypt them but I'm not overwhelmed by the software we use.
  10. My bad, read the question wrong.
  11. A true pentagon (all angles / sides the same) doesn't tessellate and couldn't be used alone to make a mosaic floor. It can be done like this: Shapes that tessellate - irregular pentagon grid Or should it be hexagons?
  12. From what I've read / seen SharePoint Foundation 2010 will be the free basic version
  13. Having now read the full survey, I would like to raise the following points: Methodology of data gathering - As has been mentioned, your survey is not representational of the mix of schools in the real world. Also the small sample size (200) is only 0.9% of the 22,000+ schools in England - this can result in large skews of data. The data has been used to backup opinion, not show what is fact. From your data I could also say: Almost two thirds (64%) don't anticipate any reduction in their budgets next year and less that 15% believe this will have a significant impact on the service they look to achieve. There's no data in the report to back that statement up, 38% say it is a top 3 support challenge. I'd agree, IT security is a challenge, but its not something I struggle with - a challenge cannot be interpreted as a struggle. Did you conduct any research into if out of hours support was required? Surely that would have been a much better idea - to gauge if there is any actual need for it than assume its needed to try and sell it to schools you claim are short of money. If you need further ideas and / or survey respondents, I'm sure the edugeek community would be more than happy to help. While I am a fan of your hardware and technical support, I do find this bandwagon jumping a little concerning, not just from Stone, but lots of other players in the education market. Self promotion by profit orientated entities is to only be expected but any self respecting individual should always question the motives behind it. For the record, I will not let my personal option on this affect my work though and will continue to purchase hardware from the company that offers my employer the best value. NB. Unfortunately I didn't see you invitation to discuss this in person at the show until it was too late. However I must admit I would have declined this as I was representing my employer at the show and don't want to mix my personal views with my work.
  14. I noticed a quote on a recent BBC article regarding only 14 percent of schools offering out of hours support - source Stone Group. So I thought I chase down the full story. It appears Stone Group have commissioned some research into IT budgets and other things... Summary of report here General jist is outsourcing = money saving = good for school There are a couple of things in the survey that raised my eye brows: Why is this a worry? Do staff / students need out of hours support? Managing your IT in house then is a problem for education? Why? As a long term customer of Stone, I'm pretty hacked off with this report. It looks they are after providing managed services now for schools and are willing to play the "lets scare SLT" card. The research was commissioned in time for BETT, so when I arrive Saturday, I'll be rolling up to the Stone stand and asking for a copy and seeing what they've got to say for themselves.
  15. I pity the fool .... that doesn't want to see this!
  16. Given that the Mayor at the time was Frank Ivancie, it dates the poster to between 1981-1985. Link Thought the duck and cover advice went out in the 70's
  17. I had this just the other day. Your version of PHP is 5.3.0 Joomla only supports up to version 5.2.9
  18. Typical lightweight BBC No news (or substance) in that what so ever - I'm sure they make all these fillers for weeks before xmas so they can run on a skeleton staff until the new year.
  19. Started by getting to level 4, after a couple of goes, got to level 7 8432. There are no boarders to the maps on level 7. Found something to do this xmas
  20. Currently setting up our HP SAN for Hyper V. How have you configured your SAN? Do you have a volume for each VM or are they all on one in folders?
  21. We are in the same boat and looking to get the capita hosted system implemented next year. Whats the process behind issuing forgotten passwords - letter sent? Which bit of the software generates the new password letter? SIMS or the AD provisioning software? I have concerns I will be lumbered with managing the system when I have more than enough on my plate atm. Can anyone reassure me its easy enough for non-technical people to manage day-to-day?
  22. We use VLANs to separate network roles - We have a different VLAN for: CCTV / security, IP Phones, Network infrastructure (switches), wifi, guest wifi, admin domain, student domain, cashless catering system, SAN. Looking next year at doing what was suggested above - putting printers on a different VLAN to stop users accessing them directly.
  23. No, we have large numbers of PCSE students - 16 at present (over 40 per year) so its just too expensive and onerous to support that number of laptops. We did have a request recently to issue them all with one by a department but this was turned down - we are looking at offering free wifi and a pre-loaded USB drive for them. Some universities do loan them to students I found out the other week. We do loan them to GTPs assigned to our school for their major placement (only 3 of these this year)
  24. We typically have 3 or 4 off on maternity at any given time (one of the problems with a young female staff). I have known 7 to be off at once. So with these numbers it makes sense for us to insist laptops are left. When it comes to long term sick we ask for the laptop to be returned by a partner, collected by a visiting friend from school, or if they are off for a few weeks, then an SMT will visit anyway and they can collect.
  25. Our LA has just audited our school. This was done by the financial services team but also included IT. A six page document was completed covering all sorts - licencing, portable media, password policies, system security, web filtering and more. The purpose of the audit was to assess the financial risk of the school for insurance reasons. In effect the auditors have no power and can only recommend actions to take to decrease our risk.
