Really helpful thread, thanks everyone. Our license renewal is coming up soon and I'm trying to work out the best approach. I'm tempted to avoid shared device licenses altogether and go for 500 user licenses to get the cheap pricing, even though we don't have that many users. But I don't know if that would be impractical for pupils using shared devices due to the activation limit. From what I've read on this thread and in https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-apps-number-of-computers.html you can have 2 devices activated against your account at once and you can deactivate a device via the Adobe portal or by signing out on the device itself. I can see a bit of wasted time at the start of lessons if the pupils forget to sign out of Creative Cloud, but am I missing anything else? Is there another reason why user licenses wouldn't be appropriate and why shared device licenses are the way to go?

I'm following Microsoft's guidance on how to distribute the roles (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/desktop-hosting-logical-architecture). I had them all running on the same server during testing and it was fine but you lose a bit of flexibility, especially if you want to expand it in the future and if you want limit which roles are exposed to the Internet. It's probably a bit excessive for now, but it might prevent some difficulties down the line. Thanks for your reply, I'll have a look in case we have space on an existing UCC cert, otherwise I think I'll just go ahead with a single domain cert.

Hi all I'm setting up a new remote access solution and using the standard remote desktop session roles in Server 2016. I have 3 servers with various roles: 1. RD Connection Broker and RD Licensing 2. RD Gateway and RD Web Access 3. RD Session Host So far I've been using self-signed certificates but now I'm ready to buy some trusted certs. There are 4 certs in use across the remote desktop solution - 2 identical for the connection broker (issued for the internal server name) and 2 identical for the gateway/web access (issued for the external subdomain name). I know I need a cert for the external address but can I get away with continuing to use self-signed certs for the internal connection broker? When I tested our solution using the RDP client, specifying both the session host address and the gateway address, I got an error saying that it couldn't verify the identify of our RD Gateway. That makes sense and presumably a trusted cert will fix this but I want to make sure I'm not going to hit another error after that saying it couldn't verify the identify of an internal server. The documentation suggests that all certs have to be trusted but I'm trying to keep costs down where possible. Thanks

I'm having the same problems on IE too.

It looked OK for me too until I tried to buy an app - after clicking the buy button it asked for my credentials again (which it usually does) but then I got stuck in a loop with it repeatedly asking for my credentials. I couldn't get past that to complete the purchase. Anyone else having this problem? At least I can do a search using Chrome now and get some results returned, so progress is being made.

What is stopping you from going over 254 hosts in a subnet?

I was/am in a similar position to you, moving from a flat network running on the default VLAN 1 across all switches. Life was good. Then we wanted to replace our old phone system with a VOIP setup and this requires the introduction of VLANs as we want to implement Quality of Service as well. We haven't made any changes to our network yet, but I found this to be a really helpful read to understand about VLANs/subnets: Cisco Networking Academy's Introduction to VLANs > Objectives It's all Cisco-based so be careful if you're using HP switches, for example, because terms like "trunk" have different meanings for HP vs Cisco. The principles from the articles are the mostly the same though. I'm still not totally sure about the routing side of things because all of our switches are layer 2 devices. You'll need a layer 3 device (e.g. a router) to route traffic between subnets, so that they know how to talk to each other. From what I've read, having a core switch which is layer 3 capable is preferable so you can configure all the routes on that. Unfortunately we don't have one and we're also getting a new firewall and routers from a new ISP, so these unknowns are creating a bit of uncertainty for us at the minute.

We moved from TrueCrypt to BitLocker back when they announced the end of TrueCrypt. All works seamlessly and has fewer steps than TrueCrypt to access your data (not that TrueCrypt was a problem, just that it had the additional mounting step).

Might be a bit late with this reply but we've just ordered a few HP ProDesk 400 G1 http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=L9T60EA&opt=ABU&sel=DEF. Haven't tried them yet but the specs look good (inc. SSD), the price is good and HP have cash back deals at the moment.

Ah, these laptops are for the pupils - up to 22 per class, so plugging in isn't really an option. They get returned to charging trolleys for a top up but can be in continual use all morning or afternoon.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I wasn't clear in the original post - we will be buying new laptops (not just batteries). So I want to be sure that we don't spend out on a brand new set of laptops which are let down by battery life. I'm looking at 4th Gen i5 so power consumption should be good. Just wondered if anyone could verify that 6 cell batteries don't cause problems in their school. It's basically another £2,500 if we want 9 cell, so if 6 cells are good enough I'd like to save the money

Hi all Just wanting to get a few thoughts on laptop batteries if anyone wants to chip in. We usually buy Dell/HP laptops with 9 cell batteries but they seem to be getting harder to find at a reasonable price. It's not uncommon for laptops to be used in lessons for around four hours straight without charge, maybe more, and the 9 cell batteries cope with this just fine. If we have to drop down to 6 cell batteries, I'd like to be sure that we aren't going to get complaints about the batteries not lasting long enough. What do you use in your schools and do you think the 6 cells will suffice? Laptop specs always suggest they'll be fine but I'd prefer to get some real world feedback. Thanks

I'm having a similar problem here. We've got ports 8739, 52965 and 52966 open on clients and the server, along with remote administration enabled. Solus 3 runs and seems to work fine (it knows when clients are online/offline, etc) but it will not deploy the agent to client machines. If I turn off the firewall on the server, the agent deploys without any problems. So at the minute I have to toggle the firewall off when I need to deploy the agent. I have no idea what needs to be changed on the firewall so that I can leave it on during agent deployment.

This one's going on my wall so next time I have a great streamlining idea it can remind me not to bother

Similar to @rdsc, I ended with 2 custom settings.ini files - one for capturing (very minimal settings) and the other for deploying (with all the gubbins). Our capture/deployment rate is fairly low so I just manually switch them over depending on the task. Capturing against a minimal custom settings.ini file like the one above would be worth trying even if the one you're using appears to have the right settings - if nothing else it could help to rule out this as a reason for the capture problem.
