  1. Just a quick thought - when I set up Edubuntu @ school I found I could browse the network easily with a user password and access other folders. Fixed by changing all the properties of the other folders...!! Ubuntu does like to find other computers on our network too! J
  2. I've used a copy of Edubuntu @ school with a special needs child. He has loved it... He has broken it twice during upgrades... He liked using the add programs bit to get more games... I would consider how you are going to stop the children accessing the windows network - Even using our copy Edubuntu it was very easy to access other children's work on our server (Fixed this issue!) :?: Also how are you going to stop the children loading new software... :?: Please don't get me wrong - I love Edubuntu and my Dell Laptop boots to Feisty! J
  3. Work in Dorset, use SWGFL and then you get a free RM SMARTCACHE! A fantastic bit of kit! J
  4. Spiceworks is quite cool - but watch out for the regular scanning for changes - it can be draining on the resources on the host machine! (just set it to what you think is best!) J
  5. http://www.spiceworks.com/ This might help... look at the Help desk bit... it can be run as a webserver - people can request tasks and then be informed in what is being done! (And each other!) (XP SP2) It is quite cool at "auditing kit" too! J
  6. I've had a play on a test PC with Vista and Office 2007. I cried.... How long have I spent teaching children and staff how to use XP and Office 2003... The children will switch easily, but the staff!! I think if and when we convert any machines to Vista I will seriously think about changing the whole school to Office 2007 as soon as possible. The staff will find it hard to use 2 different Offices. J
  7. Ok - after a very (very) quick play... In 9.7 you can open 9.5 files and the old .xbx files too. Once you have saved a file in 9.7 it will open in 9.5!!! However the new feature of "text direction" doesn't carry across in the save from 9.7 back to 9.5. I'll keep playing. J
  8. When our server room hit "40" 2 years ago I threatened to switch off the server and switches. I was given a room fan... and asked "will this help?" Our air con is now set to 18 ish J
  9. Worryingly, I quite like the Tartan one! (I also have a tie which matches it) J
  10. It's a bit harsh about the "eats the baby" but the rest MUST BE TRUE! J
  11. Can't wait for the Geography teacher to use this one!!
  12. Winamp - - Media Library - Online services Tick the "Aol radio with XM" Choose "AOL radio with XM" in the left hand pane... 20 free radio channels from AOL!! A great selection - all free - constantly streaming!! J 8O
  13. I use the "Blue Screen of Death" as a picture to blank/disable the children's machines using NetOp. I love watching their faces    Small things!! J
  14. I like the source code for this...
  15. I was looking for a new server... however I think it hasn't the storage I was looking for - I would be worried that all my staff and children would fill it with photos within a half term!! J
  16. We have always had to rename the PC manually - in fact we have to login to the computer (not the network) then rename the machine, then login to the network. Sometimes we even have to take it off the network domain and then change the name. Sorry I could help!
