Steady now, that font could injure someone!

OK folks, with the news that the RBS fat cat SIr Fred Goodwin is not going to give back any of his £693k per year pension, after wrecking the bank and loosing thousands of his former employees their jobs. What are the general thoughts on this? John Prescott had a good moan on Radio Four (stop tittering at the back!) this moring about how it should be stopped (in part) and let the fat cat drag the govenment to court to argue his case. Form an orderly queue......

While job hunting in Canada, dropped off 120 CV's door to door around the town where I lived. -25c and a foot of snow, in trainers! Not one reply. What would I do different? Where decent boots!

When I left the Army in 1997, after 23 years service. I felt the panic you are feeling now. Probably far more so as I had a family and mortgage to service. I was living in Suffolk, but my "Home town" was in Bedfordshire and I felt a little lost. I sat reading the local paper at my uncles and saw a job at Capita (SIMS) as an IT support engineer (9k - school leaver). I applied for it, for interview practice. I had been to interviews at schools in Ipswich, twice eight of us had sat around nervously fidgiting. Twice the Headteacher had walked on and greeted the favoured candidate like a long lost brother! I felt sick. I got an interview at Capita for a better joband got that. Moved to their office in Essex, then got this job when Suffolk took on SIMS. Don't sit at home and mope. Get out and have a coffee in a Costa's somewhere and sit read a book (from your original post, you must love reading!) If it is finacially viable, go swimming. Jog if you can. The exhaution will help you sleep. Is your CV up to scratch? Do you get interviews? I am not sure of the legalities of it, but investigate any avenue to get your foot into the door of a possible emplyee. Tailor your CV to the post you are applying for, some people may feel you will want to move on soon to a better job, given your list of qualifications and experience. Being over-qualified can harm you as much as being under qualified. You mentioned your ethinc background. Frankly, if I can get you to work on time and do a fairs days work and make my customers smile, you could be from Mars for all I care. And given the diversity of work forces I have been in in IT in the last ten years, many would agree. Judging from some of the pictures on here, some may well be! Just kidding guys!

I don't know the West Midlands (or the East Midlands for that matter!) Fact is you have got a shed load of experience and so long as you have a posative approach, you will get work. (Just don't send you mortgage payments to me in the mean-while!) Seriously, my daughter lost her job two weeks ago and was hired again after three days, closer to home, more money, better prospects. Why? She wanted it. Self belief and a posative attitude will prevail. Good luck.

Examine your "Core skills", clearly most of us have organisational skills, fault finding etc. I used those skills to move into IT ten years ago, prior to that I was in Aviation, repairing helicopters (big green ones!) If you think life is hard now, try doing your job with the rain running down your nesk and being covered in stinking gas turbine engine oil! Or having to carry your toolbox the mile or across the airfield to change the computer that's gone "Pete Tong". I would never diasagree that there are days I would rather being doing something else like writing a novel, or even doing a milk round. But the bank seems to be quite happy and I don't have to work weekends or get up too early. Good luck if you move on, but just remember, someone somewhere thinks your job is the one THEY would kill for.

I use "Foldersynch", it can be run from a script and updates when new files are added to the source.

Do a poll of what interest them. Games? Then how about a games / cheats database? Cars? Speed, cost, acceleration fuel economy and stuff. You can start off with an Excel spreadsheet and end up with a SQL database being accessed by a php web interface. Room enough for growth?

I have used Partition Commander 8 since XP came out (previously used Partiton Magic 6). I think it's time I got my hand in my pocket and bought a newer version as my version does not support SATA drives. It does do nice stuff like recover dead "Dynamic disks" though, so cannot complain. My number 1 CD.

We have used it here quite a bit. Great for showing non-technical budget holders where the system needs money spending on it! A picture is worth a thousand words etc.

The IP address conflicts, are they ACTUALLY conflicts or is this a DNS issue? Your IP lease will expire and a new IP address will be issued, but is the DNS record being updated? Is DNS scavenging being done? Obviously we have no idea just how many nodes your are trying to connect, but your address range should be 172.18.0.0 - 172.18.3.255, am I right? You have confirmed the the first 254 are reserved for static devices, leaving you with a possible 750 ish addresses free. Never dipped my toe this far into subnets, but had problems with IP address and DNS conficts before, so thought I would add my half penny worth.

A tech here in Suffolk asked me to give him a reference for the headteacher at the school he was applying to. "There are three types of tech, those that think they know everything, those that DO know everything and those that know something and can find out the rest! He is the last type." The tech got the job and a grade pay rise. Has since gone on to teach us stuff. As long as you are honest with everyone about what you do and do NOT know, you will get along and people will fall over themselves to help. Good luck.

Well done Miss, I hope they were all polite callers! (Some aspects of this post should be taken with a pintch of salt as my other half would have laughed with us).

The school are backing up the entire server to tape. Or at least they were. Not fully supported by us. The built-in SQL 2005 agent takes care of SIMS .net

We have been using NovaBackup on XP for some years, since version 7.3 Did my first SIMS data migration to Server 2008 the other day and the suppliers found out the hard way that tapes are not supported. Down-loaded and installed the server version of NovaBackup 10 to get the school out of a pickle. Works fine, still not sure of cost (around £100 ish) and when all concerned are smiling at the end of the day, that's called "A result".

Oh I don't know? Maybe that would sort schools out a bit. Look on the bright side, if the ex miltary officers did not get the job, you could end up with a politician who has lost his 'seat'!

Localzuk made a good point. "Social Engineering" is the only 'hacking' he did. No mention of using readily available tools to sniff the wireless network from the school grounds.

You have not said HOW you start the program? Desktop short-cut? Start menu? Have you tried running Excel from it's executable in "Explorer"?

The "Parental consent" bit refers to the fact the school may not have a policy in force to allow the children to be videoed. Not 'small minded', just an observation.

Parental consent? Ensure the SMT do need leave you carrying the can when word gets back to the parents. Sounds dumb, but sadly it’s the world in which we live folks.
