Yeah - its like they didn't bother finishing the control panel stuff. The setting for 'custom scaling' is supposed to be for all users/monitors but it simply doesn't do anything The only way to do this is to edit the ntuser.dat for each PC, and change each monitor setting as they will be unique to the PC/Monitor combination. Welcome to Windows 10 in 2020....

Argh, its days like this I want to remove Windows 10 and replaced it with anything else! We've just installed some nice new touch screens and plug them into our PCs - as the PCs only have VGA/DVI at the moment we have the DVI to the monitor and VGA to the large screen. Resolution for both is a 1920 by 1080 which is ok for both screens But Windows 10 in its wisdom sets the default scaling to 150% for every user on login, which makes the monitor look wrong. The only way around this is to create a registry hack to set the scaling to 100% for the display on that PC, which means its unique to every flaming PC - which means we have to do this specifically for 40+ PCs now Surely you'd think you could set the display for all users, but no - its has to be done for every user, or modify the default ntuser.dat file.

iPhone XR loses network connections
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
That’s what I was afraid of, it’s a random error that seems to be a problem with this model of phone. -
iPhone XR loses network connections
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Yeah I have a very thin 'tpu' gel type of cover - its been on since day one but this problem only started a couple of months ago I never suspected the case as wireless charging works fine through it, and its pretty thin anyway -
iPhone XR loses network connections

No, I've seen that article before but I'm on Three (albeit through ID) -
My iPhone XR is regularly (i.e more than once a week) failing to connect to any services - i.e it fails to send a text, and loses internet connectivity over wireless and 4G Toggling airplane mode on and off seems to fix this, although I would have thought the phone (SMS) and wifi and 4G all used different hardware? I'll do a factory reset as thats all Apple will start with, but has anyone else seen these problems? I've cleaned the sim card but that wouldn't have any effect on the wifi anyway

Error installing Mosyle MDM profile
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
You can add a device in Moysle by simply browsing to a url they provide, which downloads a profile. Its worked on the other 79 that way These were bought a while ago and weren't registered in DEP by a previous tech and the company is no longer around -
Error installing Mosyle MDM profile
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
They all the same iPad hardware and iOS, I've tried manually adding the profile from Moysles deployment page and also directly from AC2 They have an AC2 profile on them which connects to the wifi - they all have the same profile. I've done a DFU/reset twice (via the ipad 'reset all settings' and once using itunes) before preparing it. I've also tried using a hotspot in case it was a weird filtering issue. Same result every time, I wonder if Mosyle thinks this device has already been registered or something like that? Although the profile just doesn't install so it never seems to connect to Moysle to become managed. -
Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
Sheridan replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
As usual teachers getting a reward that many won't have deserved, support staff forgotten completely Personally I worked through the lockdown, mainly onsite and I would say 1/3 of our teachers did a lot, 1/3 did some and 1/3 did nothing - just based on the logins/content created etc -
I've got one ipad (out of a trolley of 20 identical ones) that stubbornly refuses to join our Mosyle MDM - I always get to the point when the profile is downloaded, but attempting to install it simply says 'Profile installation failed' This ipad works fine, and is identical to the other 19. Its been reset/prepared multiple times but will not work with the profile! The date/time etc are all OK and its never been joined to another MDM (its been ours from new) so I'm wondering if anyone has any other suggestions as to what can cause this? We have 3 other trolleys of the same ipads, and they're all working too, so its 1 out of 80 in total!

It’s just a question that’s been asked by a few people, personally I agree with you, it’s on a laptop when you buy it. But armed with the full info (and costs) I can show why we don’t go down this route!

Before I make any changes I just want to clarify I'm reading our MS OVE-ES agreement correctly. We pay for OVS-EES (Basic CAL, OS and Office pack) based on our FTE staff. We install the OS & office across the school using these licenses. With this we also get the option through OSA to allow Students and Staff to download Office to their home computer through their Office 365 login - which they also use to validate. This doesn't apply to the OS (i.e W10) as far as I can see, and this has to be purchased for Students using the Student option? So for us to allow Staff and Students to use Windows 10 at home on their personal devices, do we have to purchase the student option, and what would enable that for staff as I can't see it mentioned anywhere?

Anyone used starleaf for video conferencing? We have to set it up for some staff and as usual it seems to ignore the proxy settings. As we have a proxy for web traffic and a much less used firewall for 'other' traffic, it simply hits the firewall and bypasses the proxy

And to be fair, I've had many issues with HP in this school (and other schools) were they hang and Dlinks having port block failures - I think they all have their foibles

Thanks for all the input & ideas, I've decided to put some UPS's in in various forms (rackmount, in cupboards, in ceilings, on shelves etc etc) - every cabinet is a different challenge but I'm sick of the power cut routine we have to go through!
-
I bet there's plenty of us on here with stories similar to this, unfortunately!
-
Cheers - I totally agree with your points about the way some schools developed their cabling, but sadly I've also seen terrible cabinet positioning in nearly new schools as well I always find I'm the last to know about any new building work/infrastructure changes - which is why networking is probably often an afterthought
-
Yeah I think in maybe half the cabs I may be able to squeeze something in - other than that I might be able to get the caretakers to 'box in' a desktop UPS - as it will be messed around with otherwise A lot of our cabs were fitted well before my time, and some are in atrocious locations. The heat is also an issue in some, with 2-3 switches (inc POE) it can already get hot without adding a 1U ups in there as well!
-
The problem is we literally have no space at all for even the smallest UPS - the cabinets are full pretty much top to bottom, and mounting a UPS outside means the kids will undoubtedly pull the plug! We tried surge protectors (4 gang) inside the cabs but they didn't seem to help much - we seem to have power cut so the surge protector probably isn't much use in this scenario.
-
We’ve got a good amount of S3300 netgear switches across the school which generally work well, the biggest issue is after a power cut or brief outage (of which we get a tiresome amount!) they refuse to power back on without manual intervention. They do work if you pull the power lead out for at least 10 minutes and then plug it back in, but this is a major pain to do especially with where some of them are located. It’s random as well, it’s not always the same ones that fail to come back on, but they’re all the same model and firmware. The firmware is also up to date. I logged it with netgear when it first happened but they just said it was something to do with the power supplies which aren’t made by them. Putting a ups in the cabinets just isn’t an option due to their location and size, so I’m wondering if anyone has see this behaviour on their switches, netgear or otherwise? I’m sick to the back teeth of spending an hour sorting these out after every power outage so netgear will not be on the list for the replacements!

thenational.academy Vimeo Videos
Sheridan replied to robyholmes's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thats worked - just the /api url seems to work without allowing direct access to vimeo.com Obviously its a bit of a flawed way to do this on smoothwall anyway, as it will allow cut and paste of urls but its a workaround -

Cheers, I'll give that a try as I'm sick of being seen as just the one who blocks 'education resources' Sometimes I'd love to sit one of them down and demonstrate how quickly I can see a wildly inappropriate video within the first search page on vimeo! -

Which was the extra entry you had to add for Netsweeper? The smoothwall article only works if you a) don't have vimeo.com blocked (such as in Core Blocked audio and video) and b) you whitelist each individual video URL -

I understand the budget side of things, but do they not realise that we have to unblock Vimeo totally to get it to work, and really quite nasty stuff is one search away? They’re better off putting it on YouTube where there is at least some kind of control -

Sheridan replied to robyholmes's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I've got the same issue, I don't want to unblock vimeo as its easy to find inappropriate content and our smoothwall won't allow anything other than URL whitelists, and the national academy contact page simply says 'Oak National Academy has been put together quickly, so unfortunately our enquiries email address is not up and running yet.' Why do 'education' sites insist on putting their videos on hosts that aren't designed for educational use? It took me 2 seconds to find something way inappropriate on vimeo
