Apple Announces The Apple Silicon M1: The end of x86?
Sheridan replied to flyinghaggis's topic in Mac
There was a definite lag in opening Rosetta based apps, but usually just the first run. Otherwise I found the apps to open at the same speed as my older mini. Like I said it may be the way I work but I’m starting to look at some of the those YouTube videos with a much more sceptical eye! If I’d never had a mini before I would have probably never thought anything of it, but the experience I had certainly wasn’t the revelation it’s been pushed as, both by apple and the YouTube lot. -
Apple Announces The Apple Silicon M1: The end of x86?

Speaking as an 2018 i3 Mac Mini owner I recently upgraded to the M1 Mini, and I have to say, I wasn't impressed. In all day to day usage (browsing, watching video, light photo work, file storage etc - typical home use) the M1 was no faster in any way, and I saw the beachball more often than on my old i3 - in fact I used the Force Quit more in the brief M1 ownership than in the previous year of i3 ownership! In the end the M1 went back, the bluetooth problems are still not resolved (as of 11.2.3) so I just gave up - even using a wired keyboard and mouse I was genuinely underwhelmed, and I was expecting a revelation - obviously I fell for the hype lol! I'm neither a fanboy, nor a hater, I like and dislike a lot of elements of both Windows and Macs, I just really like the Mini as a home PC, so I was really quite disappointed - I watched a lot of the videos on youtube and to be honest, I never saw anything like the performance they were claiming, perhaps if I'd been doing more intensive work it would have shone , but I didn't see it, as it took longer to open apps sometimes than my old i3 -
I've managed to roll back to my original config, albeit on a rebuilt server. However I'm getting some extremely weird results - for example if I deploy the setting to show 'simple' Finder, then Finder just won't open at all on the client, if I remove it Finder opens ok? I thought it may be profiles left over from the previous server (which no longer exists) but I've deleted the profiles (and deleted /var/db/ConfigurationProfiles) but is there anywhere else Profile Manager puts configuration on a client?
-
Yeah it worked fine for a few years on HS, wish I'd just left it alone now!
-
Looks like PM in Big Sur is a complete non starter - rebuilt from scratch and still can't enroll any devices. All the log shows (SCEPService.log) is: EXCEPTION: SCEP BAD CHALLENGE and Now I have to try and find a way to roll this back a version of two of Macos, as once upgraded to Big Sur you can't use the internet recovery method to roll back.
-
Yeah the server app starts ok, its just the final part when you switch on Profile Manager and then the error appears! Edit: Deleting the \Library\Server folder has resolved this, and I've managed to run through the setup - clients don't apply the config though as they get the -1001 error now. I'm sure I've seen that before and I cant remember how I fixed it! I think I'll just wipe the server back to Sierra and reload PM that way - it worked fine for the handful of devices we were using.

I upgraded our Mac running High Sierra and Profile Manager to Big Sur, understanding that I will need to rebuild Profile Manager as the upgrade completely toasts the configuration. Not a biggie as we only use PM to manage 10 older iMacs. However after the upgrade and reinstalling PM, I can't start the thing, it just comes up with the useless error "an error with code -1 occurred" - thank Apple for that helpful error code! I've tried a reset using the wipeDB command but it still doesn't work. Is there a way to wipe all traces of PM so I can start again, or is it just a flat reinstall of MacOS?

Yes, ours has just re-appeared as well! Must have been a widespread issue or update
-
Yes, our Product Keys are still showing, but we can't download anything - bit of a pain when you need the latest iso for Windows/Server 2019!
-
Thanks - I've contacted our reseller as well - its a bit worrying staring at an empty VLSC!
-
I've just logged into our VLSC account (we've had an active OVS-ES agreement for years) to find the Products and Keys section almost empty - only showing 9 Windows 7 and Office 2010 products. We're missing everything, Server, Windows 10, Office 2013-2019 etc - I've contacted MS but has anyone else had this issue?
-
We have essentials as well, it seems 6 sockets is the limit on a license before you have to upgrade and then hit the silly price band I've asked for pricing on the VM model, as £20k is a non starter
-
We've run Veeam on two older servers to backup several hosts (3 on one and 2 on another) due to legacy kit etc. This meant we had Veeam for 6 CPUs on one license and 2 CPUs on another - about £1k a year However I'm trying to merge all the hosts onto one backup server so 8 CPUs in total. However veeam won't allow us to merge them and only offer an upgrade to the version above which is nearer £20k! Thats a ridiculous price for us so we're probably ditching Veeam, so can anyone recommend a good VmWare backup solution, as we backup VMs to NAS, and also to a tape autoloader and will also probably add cloud in the near future? I'd be laughed out of the meeting where I propose 20 grand for backup software alone!

I've seen this happen with updates, software install, AV updates and issues as well as just sheer randomness with W10. Can you connect to the PCs event viewer when its in this state?
-
Well deleting the ACU, and scanning to add it back in seems to have worked. As soon as Net2 saw the ACU again it started logging events as normal. Odd, but not a difficult fix.
-
Its odd as it simply stopped logging events today, apart from the reset events from the reinstate I did I might try deleting it and then seeing if it reappears in the list of ACUs
-
That had some effect, it logged that it had been reinstated and reset, but logs nothing else such as fob activity. Very odd.
-
One of our net2 Nanos just randomly stopped logging any events today. Its connected to an airbridge and we've rebooted both several times, and the lock seems to work as normal but no events are logged in the Net2 software, it shows up as online and up to date and generally everything seems to be normal. The airbridge also has another lock bound to it and that is logging events, and all the other doors in the school are logging events as well so it looks like its just one door not logging events Anyone seen this kind of problem before?

That's what I want to avoid, a free for all of extensions and apps. Its the same as iOS apps - in that there are millions of them and everyone picks their favourite (or what another school uses :-) ) and then we're expected to know how to use it or why it doesn't work anymore etc, plus how it affects GDPR and privacy etc Its like the old IE toolbar era - let them install toolbars and they will install all of them!
-
How do you handle chrome extensions in your school, do you allow staff to add what they like or whitelist ones that are requested? We currently do the latter and I'm already sick of people finding the 'best thing ever' that need to be installed, when half the time something else already exists to do the the same job. Dualless for example allows you to split the screen, just like Windows already lets you do... The problem is too many extensions can causes issues with Chrome, and they're not supported so we're expected to help with them - and as we all know teachers will literally install everything without even checking, or removing ones they don't use anymore
-
In the end I removed any proxy settings from the Users OU and added it to the Device OU Networks. I then made it so the Users settings allowed them to specify the proxy. That works as the Device Network settings for in school devices prevents the device from using any other Wifi network, and the home use ones don't have a Wifi set at all. Problem with this is when the students bring a home use device into school it won't connect to the school wireless but thats not so much of an issue as if they're in school, then I would say they don't need to bring the chromebook in!

It was set to RAID so I switched it to AHCI mode, but it didn't make any difference. What I don't get is how slow the whole thing is, it takes 5-10 minutes to inject drivers, but on another (older) PC this stage flies past in seconds
-
Yeah I've done that as well - it didn't seem to make a difference to speed or the end result, but it was the only drivers Dell offered.
-
We're trying to deploy an image to a Dell laptop (new inspiron model) and it seems to go through the whole WDS process happily, albeit very very slowly compared to other devices. Even the Inject Drivers stage takes minutes! After hours the operating system image is finally finished, and the laptop boots to the blue screen, with an iastor.sys error I've added the Intel storage matrix drivers to WDS and MDT but it has made no difference - so I'm a bit stuck as to a) why the process is soooo slow and b) why it fails after 'succesfully' finishing and blue screens
-
When it does connect, it shows https connections being established with the gateway url, which sounds about right. I just don't see anything that would cause this to fail a few times before finally working. The simple fact it can (eventually!) establish a connection and work normally seems to suggest the firewall is fine.
