The shares with the problem are all on the same server could it have been rebooted for a microsoft update etc... while she was logged in so they went offline? If she disconnects the shares, logs off and back on again do they still show as unavailable? Edit: beaten to it

I haven't needed to do this yet myself but as far as I know all you need to do is install the 32bit drivers on your 2003 server then open the sharing tab on the printer and use the additional drivers button, then just point it at your 64 bit drivers.

If W7 clients are 64bit have you installed the 64bit drivers on the server? Have you checked the security permissions on the printer share? I've not tried it on W7 but I have been using something very similar on XP for years, the only other thing that I can think of that could cause problems is the extra security features W7 has built in.

Yes I did that once but it was quite some time ago our use was quite high even back then. What it can't show is how much time is wasted by users that have to sit there twiddling their fingers while something downloads. It may well be that a web based MIS system wont have a very high bandwidth requirement (I simply don't know one way or the other) but the issue is that its using the same connection as all of our curriculum users which already puts our connection under strain. If we are not careful we could have admin staff unable to complete their jobs because year 6 are streaming videos for the kids to watch etc... You have no idea how much grief I got from our admin staff because the HR / Finance portals don't work correctly with the current versions of acrobat reader which caused the portals to grind to a halt. I have visions of exactly the same thing happening with an online MIS system if we don't have enough bandwidth and the only response I would be able to give is wait until the kids / teachers have gome home and try again... There is a big difference between a locally hosted MIS which you have got either a gigabit or 100Mb connection to and a 10Mb link you are sharing with another 50+ concurrent users.

10Mbps is quite slow these days and is slower than most peoples home connections, yes the upload is better and you don't have the contention issues but even so... Virgin media are doubling my "entry level" home connection from 10Mbps to 20Mbps for free so downloads will be faster at home than at school which does seem a bit crazy when the school is paying 6k and Im paying less than £300. And yes before anyone starts I know you can't compare the two i.e. filtering, download limits etc, etc... There might well be some none LEA controlled schools that don't have 10Mbps connections but I thought all other schools in birmingam were now 10mb or better as that was seen as a requirement. I can't remember if it was a government thing or a link2ict thing... We are rather large as we have over 700 pupils so our internet use is quite high already which is why I question whether our connection will cope. If we have 30 kids using education city in the ict suite, half a dozen class teachers trying to play youtube clips etc, me downloading software updates, another 20 teachers checking email etc etc then we try to add an online MIS system into the equation... Oh and I almost forgot our staff with link2ict VPN connections, they don't normally connect during the day but every now and again you do get one that needs to work from home for some reason. We also have a small childrens centre onsite and they are using the schools internet connection, although it's only a small number of users it still has an impact if they are streaming videos etc. We are also about to go wireless so as we purchase more devices class room use will increase and instead of just a couple of PCs in a room there could potentially be class sets of laptops etc... I understand your point about using old kit for cloud computing but it depends what you mean by "cloud" computing educationcity is "cloud" computing as such but you are still using the processing power of the PC. Try and get XP or W7 with all of the updates, policy central and sophos running and the hardware requirements have gone through the roof before you have even opened a webpage, cloud computing isn't an excuse to stop investing in workstations or servers for that matter as our Business manager seemed to think we wouldn't need an admin server once we migrated to progresso...

Disconnecting a board powering it down, reconnecting it and powering it back up sometimes clears it - I've never waited an hour. If its on a usb / serial extension try it without - extensions are a common cause of the problem. Re flashing the firmware can also help NOTE: if it goes wrong you will need a new controller.

A thread I pulled up msvcr80.dll was not found - MS Office Support said that MSVCR80.dll is a Visual C runtime dll so it might be worth trying to download the microsoft visual c redistributable and re installing it that way. Looking at the thread it’s a common error but it doesn’t have a single solution, some reinstalled the dll, some uninstalled security software others couldn’t fix it… Thinking out of the box have you tried reinstalling the printer driver? If system restore is enabled have you tried that? It might be a case of biting the bullet and just reinstalling the laptops with the issue...

Its only one dll error TdmIconOverlay.dll is looking for but cant find MSVCR80.dll, can you copy the missing dll from another of the laptops and re register it? Registering and unregistering .DLL files may or may not work but worth a go?

Link2ict provide fibre links directly to the schools i.e. fibre to the premises not fibre to the cab as in home connections so as far as I know all schools in birmingham either get true 10mb or 100mb connections, they also have onsite squid proxies to cache data. The contract they have with virgin media doesnt allow them to offer say 30mb or 50mb connections or so I have been told. You can't access some services outside of this connection due to restrictions by ip ranges firewalls etc... If you change ISP you will need to contact link2ict or a birmingham school that has already left the fold so to speak. It might be that they are willing to allow access to services such as the zimbra admin console to additional ip ranges but they might not...

Netsupport was installed on one of our servers which our LEA ICT people use for remote support. I dont know why but it caused the print spooler to crash removing the software (it was an old version) stopped the print spooler crashing so it might not be a driver issue. It might be worth checking if you can find newer drivers from HP I would try and get the model specific ones myself rather than generic. Just the basic driver if you can without any of the junk printer installation cds sometime try to install. I always use standard IP ports when installing printers. I always disable bidirectional support. Also is there plenty of space on the drive the print spooler is on? In the days before sparklebox was banned some of our print jobs were so huge it was crazy.

I’m also interested as the cost of upgrading to 100mb is rather high and they have said they can not supply anything in between its either 10mb or 100mb. I’m sure somewhere I once saw a price and virgin were offering gig connections for the same price as link2icts 100mb links. But it is a rather large can of worm to open when you start looking at the implications! 10mb is just about ok for us at the moment but if we wanted to use offsite backup for more than admin data it wouldn’t be up to the job (a restore would take days). My current concern is that if we move to an online MIS system such as Progresso will it cope? 1. I’m not aware of any. 2. Probably but they would need to send data out to the web and connect through your new firewall which unless your ISP provide you need to do yourself. 3. Unless it has changed certain parts of the BGFL network are only available if you are connected directly. Parts of the old link2ict website were not available outside the BGFL network because they had recommended supplier info etc I don’t know if this is still the case. Other things that would need testing include the HR Portal, Finance portal, remote backup (if you use it). Their Video conferencing solution (although they only gave that to secondary schools) wouldn’t work. Their VPN solution wouldn’t work. I don’t think the admin page for Zimbra works. The ebriefing system would need testing. The admin software they use to transfer data to the LEA (can’t remember what it’s called off the top of my head). I’m sure there are a lot more… Obviously they could allow external access to some / most of these services but it’s more of a case of will they or will they say it’s a security risk? I’m not sure if the charges for Sophos and Policy central are part of the broadband fee or are separate. I don’t think the policy central interface can be used outside the BGFL network so you might have to purchase that and host it in house as well.

In a secondary where you have say a bank of PCs in a music room, science lab etc with subject software on I can see how targeting the installations could help. As we are a primary it wouldn’t be as easy to setup its only things with limited licences (which we try to avoid) or specialist software such as rossetta stone that are not installed site wide. E.g. Rosseta stone was installed in the class rooms it was needed in at the time so it’s not as easy to target as say a dedicated room and I’m happy with the way our AD structure is setup and wouldn’t want to change it unless I had to. We are also still on 2003r2 so GPP would be a pain to manage for us. Even with some software not available on all PCs we don’t seem to have the problem others are reporting. But maybe that’s because we are also using subfolders in our menu structure and possibly the load on our network / servers is lower?

I once found a shortcut that pointed to a unc path on a workstation rather than the local exe... Another time an ICT Coordinator decided to try installing some software and she copied a rather large exe onto the re-directed desktop instead of a shortcut... Ours are also grouped by subject folders with some sub folders under those with only limited progs in the main start menu.

I would check the shortcuts that you are still having problems with, one of them is probably on a network share thats not available. I havent had to resort to using the noresolvetrack / noresolvesearch because replacing the problem shortcut fixed ours when we had a problem but it should still work. Are you sure the new polocies are applying correctly did you run a gpupdate /force on the workstation after changing the policies? They are only setting registry options could you add them to your logon script and see if it works that way? Not sure if it searches for icons if they are missing or if you get a blank icon... So you created an msi which contains your shortcuts and it installs them to a folder on the local hdd? Sorry but I dont see how this would help, if a program is missing i.e. an application is only installed on some of the PCs not all of them windows explorer will still search for the missing file. You can also use offline files to cache the startmenu / desktop for laptops that are used away from the network so I don't see why you need an msi.

I would double check all of your shortcuts first! From experience its shortcuts that are looking for missing files on mapped drives / network shares that cause most problems. Shortcuts looking for missing files on a local hdd dont usually take that long. I think you can disable it via group policy as well I would start with looking at: NoResolveTrack NoResolveSearch NoResolveSearch: Core Services

We have a quantum LTO4 and as far as I can see it doesn’t have a fan, you are correct in that I think our old LTO2 did have one but I have not had any problems with our drive. “Surely two drives cannot be faulty?” Depends if they are from the same batch if the serial numbers are similar then it’s more likely. It sounds more like a problem with your server room temp / poor case design. Does your server room have air con? If the ambient temp is too high it won’t make any difference how many fans your server has because they will be sucking in hot air. Your server room should ideally be approx 18-22c even on a hot day. Our server with the lto4 is getting on a bit now but it only has one case fan on the back, a fan on the hdd bay and the usual psu and cpu fans. Can you fit more / better fans in the server case? You should be able to get external drive bays but the fans on them are tiny so don’t expect them to keep the drive cooler than in a server case. A 12cm case fan will pull far more air than the tiny things that are fitted in drive bays.

Raid5 But more drives mean the array keeps working if one fails, without redundancy and with a performance hit though. It might depend on the controller but from experience if a single drive fails in a 3 drive raid5 array the server will crash and you can't use the array until the faulty drive has been replaced and the array rebuilt. If on the other hand a single drive fails in a 5 disk raid5 array the server keeps running and the array should rebuild in the background when the faulty drive is replaced - dont ask me about a 4 disk array because I dont know. So if you can go for a 5 disk array +1hotspare +1sat on a shelf Raid5 only gives you redundancy it still needs a backup solution because if 2 drives fail you can wave goodbye to your data.

One school I used to work at had smart boards and they had this problem as well. I work at a Promethean school now and the newer boards are adjustable but I don’t know if smart have developed anything similar. It wasn’t ideal but the school I used to work at had a wide (width of the board) double step in front of them with built in storage so the kids could stand on the steps to reach and the teacher didn’t have to bend double. The smart table looks nice but the price isn’t budget friendly… You can also get fairly cheap touch screens £150-200 perhaps you could use one with a spare PC for the kids or replace the teachers screen with one and mount it next to the smart board. I’ve no idea how good the touch screens are or if you could connect one to a PC that is already running a smart board but it’s another option to think about.

Why do you need html on the desktop? Just use redirected desktop and if you really need a html page install iis on a server and create an intranet page and set it as the default home page.

Tell me about it - lol I had acrobat reader 10.1.1 deployed site wide and had to make a new package for 9.5 its like talking to a brick wall when you call them and tell them the problem is their end and they need to fix it... At least they are saying IE8 is ok these days but if I was on W7 and couldnt use IE9 I wouldnt be a happy bunny; I remember having a conversation with them once and they said I should be using IE6... Its the HR Portal and another one the bursar uses that cause the problems. Just luck so far that an app / site hasnt needed the current version to run correctly because I dont know what we are supposed to do then. You can see it coming cant you e.g. HR portal needs old obsolete version and progresso needs the current version...
