I wrote an article here that goes over how to take a WDS image and get it on a Mac as a BootCamp image Create a Bootcamp Image From a Pre Built Windows Image If you have newer Macs you may run into an issue with the BootCamp/Windows partition not blessing. To fix this I've had to use WinClone. I've been trying to figure out an easier method. If you have an older Mac it will just work. You can image the Windows partition and it will show up as a bootable option. Apple Windows Bootcamp Won't Bless

We have a college conference coming up and I've been asked to put on a Q&A for users with iPads, iPhones etc. and they want me to go over some of the basics for new users or those whom are not all that tech friendly. I support these devices as they come into our tech office but I'd like to make a list to go over some of the common questions that people would have. I'm thinking more questions home users would have. Thank you for your feedback!

Anyone else using Profile Manager to bind their computers to Active Directory? We used Profile Manager last year to bind all of our Macs/labs to Active Directory but now we have an issue where the Directory Utility is not using the "Computer Name" and instead using part of the computer SN#. In Active Directory this has become a complete mess. This once worked smooth as it would use the ID from "Computer Name". If I do it manually it will use the Computer Name but when Profile Manager pushes out the settings it uses part of the SN#.

If you have a default user profile in place make sure you delete the "keychain" folder. Doing this forces a new one to be created when a new AD user logs in and it will be theres. If you keep a default one in place it will prompt you for the password of the user you created the default profile with.

Have a look at this document, may help with web setup https://osxdominion.wordpress.com/2015/02/26/setting-up-munki-with-os-x-yosemite-server/

I was having issues a few weeks ago and since we push our servers out via Profile Manager we reset them and I found we needed to set the printers up as LPD printers and not IPP. Another issue we are running into is print drivers and I've turned to GimpPrint to solve a lot of those conflicts.

Unfortunately not much else I can think of and I just rebuild our Munki Server on Friday from scratch. On a client machine try to bring up a manifest by going to http://IP_Address/MUKI_REPO/ You should see something similar to http://i.imgur.com/nae9c3u.png

I know this is not your normal question on here but I figured this would be worth a try. I Volunteer my time with Skills Canada with a Tech Team made up of a few people from across Canada and one of our biggest issues revolves around licensing and Microsoft Windows being the primary. We spend a few days to setup hundreds of workstations, temporary labs etc. that get used for all of two days. Microsoft Windows does have a trial but we find this can cause issues when we try to build image ahead of time and in the end turns into a mess trying to build 9-12 images from scratch over 1-2 days to then deploy. So right to the question, does anyone know of a contact within Microsoft Canada that could possibly help us? (Of course through PM Personal Message). We've tried to reach out to MS but it's hard to get a hold of someone that has the ability to help out. Skills of course has a number of large companies that supports the event and in turn there is a lot of advertising of those companies so this would certainly be a selling point in exchange for help. By default munki checks every hour. By running the script it tells the computer to check on the next reboot.

When I've had it not responding I've found that removing the "Server Website" "Redirects" fixes the issue. Also I see you have three versions of flash? You only need to keep the latest one so you can delete the others or at the least uncheck the rest and keep the latest checked off. http://i.imgur.com/Tap2NzO.png

You want to use "Installs or Managed Installs" depending on your version of Munki Admin. Also make sure you have Flash checked off in your catalogs as seen below on mine. One step that I miss once in a while when creating a new manifest is to add a catalog. Make sure you add your production catalog as seen in the image below to your manifest. Without this it won't do anything. http://i.imgur.com/1NcmoyR.png http://i.imgur.com/BMlq1Jo.png http://i.imgur.com/sJXhuxd.png

We found a USB stick today at the college so we had a look to see if there was anything on it to notify the owner that it was found and we did. The owner was smart by having a folder at the root of the thumb stick saying "RETURN IF LOST". In this folder there was a file with the persons contact and a note. http://i.imgur.com/z1CmHYM.jpg

The client computers need to be told where the server is. With Deploy Studio I have a script that runs during Post Imaging that loads the settings for that lab. I have a copy of the "Munch Client Setup Script" you can download from here Downloads But basically it looks like this: #!/bin/sh sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/ManagedInstalls SoftwareRepoURL "http://SERVER_ADDRESS/munki_repo" sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/ManagedInstalls ClientIdentifier "Manifest_Name" sudo echo "Setting munki to bootstrap mode..." sudo touch /Users/Shared/.com.googlecode.munki.checkandinstallatstartup Make sure the server has a Manifest that's named the same as the Manifest you have in the script. This tells the client computers to look to that Manifest. From here add Flash into that Manifest as a Managed Download and you should be good.

Thanks for the info! I was thinking this was the case yesterday so later in the day I setup DeployStudio to run a script that runs the Office 2016 VL Serializer during Post Deployment. I already have a script made that does the same thing for Adobe Creative Cloud so now both activations run from the same script. I added the VL Serializer installer to the image so it's already there when the script runs. I'd rather MS use a KMS server to deal with the licensing like we do for Windows 7/10 and Office 2016 for PC. Would make life a lot easier.

Anyone else having an issue with the Office 2016 for Mac Volume License version asking to be activated? We have our latest image build setup with Office 2016 and everything is great except Microsoft Office 2016 is asking to be activated. The software suite was installed using our install and volume license installer that we get direct from Apple but no luck. Anyone else having a similar issue?

I was having a lot of issues this past week then I noticed that for some reason my printers flipped over to using IPP printing. Once I re-added them at LPD all printers started printing again.

I just keep apps like these updated on the server then copy them into Munki. From there they get pushed out to all the labs to update the apps.

I agree and disagree. Apple knows that large institutions use a default profile and the finder sidebar has worked since OS X was released. This is a bump in the road that has a big impact on the user experience. I'm not saying it's a bug but it's certainly a pain to all those that use a standard profile for deployment. Since the release of Yosemite 10.10 this has been an issue that many have been trying to get around. Yes there are Python scripts but so far nothing seems to be cut and dry simple. Either-way, for now this is a quick solution to fix the Finder Sidebar for all of us that use default profiles for deployment purposes.
-
Try opening up Automator then open this script in Automator and run it inside the application. It will show you the steps and tell you where it's failing. This will help to figure out what the issue is.

Thanks again @harryn I've posted a topic on this here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/167318-os-x-finder-sidebar-favourites-missing-permission-issue.html#post1432897 .

Full Blog post @ OS X Finder Sidebar Favourites Missing or Permission Issue I’ve been dealing with this issue for a good while now and there are countless articles online that talk about this but there hasn’t been a solid fix yet. In most cases users are playing with the Finder and Sidebar preferences but without luck. This is one of the only steps that seems to gets messed up with permissions errors or bad links when you use a default profile script. Everything else seems to work but starting with OS X 10.10 this has been broken. Today with a suggestion from @harryn over at EduGeet.net http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/72443-how-create-os-x-default-profile-template-bind-ad-10-5-10-8-a-3.html#post1432366 I simply removed/deleted the user I use to build the profile then had a new user log into the computer and there it was, all the Sidebar Shortcuts with proper links and permissions. This now means I can customize the sidebar with the users Desktop, Download, Documents folders etc. and they will properly work when a user selects a location.
-
Yes this is correct. So if you delete the use you use to build your default profile (do this after you run the default user script) then log in as a new user you will have a fully working sidebar.
-
Ahh ok I under stand what you are saying now and gave it a test and it works So the quick fix is to just remove the user used for the default profile but recommended that you still have an alternate Admin user created. If you need to make changes later just create the same default user again, make your changes, run the script then delete the user. A few more steps but it's a work around and it will fix a lot of complaining we've had over this. Thank you @harryn !!!!
