Hi Drapec, I have this configured on our iMacs by mounting an AFP share at boot up, then using Folder Redirection on Workgroup Manager to redirect home drives to this AFP share. Users SMB home directories are then displayed on the desktop as a mounted volume by default. We're running 10.6.8 Client & Server in a 'Magic Triangle' If you'd like more info PM me. Thanks

I'm pushing a printer out to 10.6 clients via MCX, which is all working fine. However, I need to somehow force the configuration to only print in mono as students keep racking up massive printing bills. Is this possible? I tried monitoring the preference directories whilst setting the printer to mono in hope of finding a plist file being amended to no avail. Thanks

I was always under the impression there was a limit of 10 devices for one Apple ID, especially if you're using it to purchase apps etc. However I've just set up 12 iPads with the same ID with no issues.

Hello Si, I would highly recommend paying for a consultant to get your Apple network set up and connected to your Windows infrastructure, it saved me a lot of time and effort initially, it allowed me to concentrate on getting proper training to support the system rather than trying to patch it all together incorrectly and suffer the consequences! John Roberts (who's on this forum) installed ours, he is also based in the South West. No doubt he will show himself in this thread soon enough The whole iPad thing is slightly different, our school is just beginning to buy lot's of iPads alongside a fleet load of staff iPhones and so far the management has been pretty simple (I use Apple Configurator + AirWatch). I've been playing around with Webdav, but at the moment staff have found it easier to send documents from the ipads to themselves via pre-configured generic email addresses attached to each device. Not a pretty set up but it works. Let me know if you're nearby Taunton as I could probably arrange a sneak peak at our set up.

We only have 15 iPads so far, but also need to manage a plethora of iPhones so we've opted for Airwatch. So far this has been very useful, I don't remember what we're paying off the top of my head. I use Apple Configurator to prepare the devices, which also installs the Airwatch app. The Enterprise Integration Service means we can authenticate with AD users too.

Do you use Apple Remote Desktop? I run a Unix command 'softwareupdate -i -a'. This downloads and installs updates from the software update server without needing any client end interaction. Hope that helps

We've had an Apple network for some time now, and due to various problems this is now our setup: - Users authenticate with AD - OD Running on Mini 10.6 Server - Forced local home directories on clients - MCX redirected home folders to a separate Mini Lion server (bound to AD and OD) with Thunderbolt Promise R4 (Clients mount a 'UserData' share on boot up using auto_master with AFP as 'Admin', then users are redirected to this for 'Pictures' 'Video' 'Music' and 'Desktop' Logic has been performing quite well on the RAID device, however recently we've had lot's of issues with permissions. I think some of the problems are down to the mismatch between the two OS X Server versions, I know 10.7.3 is meant to resolve a few issues with AD binding, I'll be trying this over half term. Would it be better to run 10.6 on the RAID server instead? Seeing as OD is running on 10.6?

Not too sure why you are choosing the Mac route if you're only using primary applications... However, out of the software listed above I've only had issues with iPhoto (as others have stated) not playing when using a non-Mac formatted volume to store iPhoto library's. This, plus issues I've had with Logic has meant I've had to force local home directories, then redirect 'Pictures' and 'Music' to a thunderbolt RAID hanging off a Lion Mac Mini Server. User's authenticate with AD, but are managed through OD. The Apple network has cost the school ALOT of money to get to it's current state, and hasn't come without lot's of problems. Mainly due to integration with Windows. If I was in your situation I'd be very cautious about choosing Mac's unless there was a serious demand for them. Good luck either way though!

Hi, I'm trying to automount a volume at boot up using the 'fstab' which seems to be working with the following setup: in auto_master: /Network/Servers -fstab then in fstab: SERVERIP:/SHARE /Network/MOUNT url auto,url==afp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@SERVERIP/SHARE 0 0 At the moment I'm getting a volume mounted, that looks correct, but I have no access to it. I would like any user that logs into the machine to have full access to this volume. I have to admit I'm very green in this department! I've been playing around with some options I've found on the net: rw,gid=12,exec (GID 12 I'm guessing relates to the ID of which ever group you'd like to give access to, in this case 12 is 'Everyone') Eventually I'm going to be using this mount point to redirect home folders to (specifically 'Music' and 'Pictures') Any help is appreciated Thanks

I did back in the summer holidays, I think I added a 10.6.7 10J869 package to the build so TB was recognised. I'm sorry that's a bit vague, what release are you trying to deploy?

Personally I've found using Logic 9 on an SMB share has been very problematic. It may be down to our SAN, but we're seriously considering getting some Apple storage specifically for use with Logic. You might want to try this: DAVE v9.0 | Thursby Software We had an evaluation licence, and it did solve most of our problems. But we were experiencing lot's of panic screens, so have removed it.

We do have WGM but I managed to solve it a different way. I added 'sudo mdutil -a -i off' to apple script and adding it to login items for all computers (via WGM). Job done

Hi guys, We have AD/OD bind, and users home directories are on our SAN (using SMB share). Users are experiencing performance issues due to spotlight indexing their home directories every time they've logged on... despite leaving it running over night, it never seems to finish. I've been investigating ways to turn indexing off and found "sudo mdutil -a -i off" not to work, also adding an apple script on logon with: "mdutil -i off ~" doesn't work. There doesn't seem to be much on internet about this particular issue... does anyone else experience the same thing?

I managed to get JayCut working perfectly on our system over the last few days, however I've just received an email from their CEO stating that they are no longer taking on new customers, and may not even continue offering JayCut video editor. Any other suggestions? There must be a big market for this kind of thing

Ah yes, I forgot to mention I'd had a look at that too. (I did message you about it funnily enough!) I couldn't find a way of uploading media, or adding media to the application in order to edit it. Also it seemed a bit clunky... but I may be using this as a last resort!

Has anyone come across a solution for basic video editing within a browser, that is hosted locally, and works on Citrix? (As basic as Windows Movie Maker) I've played around with Kaltura and JayCut, both products haven't really worked as I'd hoped. I know I'm asking a lot. But it must have been done somewhere.

Another question for you Matt, what are the hardware specs of your SAN? Thanks for all of your replies chaps, I understand that Logic isn't really designed to work over the network, but given the speeds of storage/connections these days it just seems like a viable option. I will naturally keep you all up to date with any progress we make.

Hi Matt, Thanks for the reply, it's good to know someone else is doing a similar thing and interesting to know you aren't receiving the same messages. Do you know what sort of projects are being run from this storage? i.e. how many audio tracks etc? We haven't really used the system enough to experience the saving to SMB error message, but I will keep that in mind when we do!

We have a suite of iMacs that I've just configured to use OD/AD bind with no problems. Students home folders and a 'Music Drive' are located on our main storage SAN (NetApp). Whenever a student loads a large project (e.g. one of the demo songs that are included with Logic) from this network location and begins to play the song, as soon as Logic comes across a location in the song that contains a large amount of data the "Disk is too slow or system overload" message is displayed. When monitoring the NetApp system, nothing abnormal is going on during the errors. We also monitored the network during these processes and again, nothing abnormal (Low utilisation). So, I moved the demo songs to a smaller/slower NAS system (4 x WD Caviar Green disks) and when playing the project the error is seen a lot less, or more likely seen when 3 other iMacs are running the same project at once. These demo projects work fine when run from local disk. Firstly I'd like to know whether running Logic projects from a network location has been done before, and if so how can we ensure this error isn't displayed? Could someone explain how Logic handles the data that is streamed? The bottom line is, I really don't want to go back to running them from local disk! Many thanks in advance
