Well it's now the second week in March and still nothing from the LA. Both of my schools are in the buy back so I don't know where the schools stand with the contracts. I mean can we pay for services just till October and perhaps move away from emPSN then, otherwise it means staying with the emPSN for another 12 months.

Eset have fixed the signature file now.

Not sure where to put this one. I'm getting reports of google handing out viruses. It started with a phone call from my other school saying google was displaying a Trojan warning message and just looked here at eset console and got 33 hits already. Both schools are using Capital Bytes proxy and eset. I've tried different searches in google and they all come up as infected.

So it's probably a good thing contracts don't end till October but it doesn't instil confidence in their management.

Thanks guys, that's put my mind at rest over the DNA question. I agree with @Ben_Stanton over Danwood being a different company now and there prices were much better than the other quote we had.

One of my schools is having a couple of photocopiers from Danwood and they want to install software on the network called Danwood DNA. It looks innocent enough as it just sends usage info back to Danwood and orders toner automatically. Just wondered if anyone has come across this software before?

Have any Leicester city schools had their new prices yet? I asked emPSN a few weeks ago and was told there is a hold up at the LA which is worrying as emPSN have this on their website I thought the contracts ended in March?

So just started setting up 365 for my other school and so far have only created 1 mailbox while waiting for the validation to complete. The mailbox is [email protected] and already I have got 2 spam emails from 2simple. I have not given this address to anyone. How can this be?

I'm with BT but thinking of moving to plusnet mainly due to price and I have to admit those plusnet prices do look attractive. So with that in mind I've got a couple of questions please. 1. Does plusnet throttle at all? I was with virgin before bt and their throttling was awful which was one of the reasons I moved to BT 2. How good is the plusnet filter? The BT filter does the job but it's not brilliant so hoping for something a little better.

I'm in the middle of a cutover migration from Exchange 2010 to 365 but keep getting errors when running the cutover batch. There are a total of 137 mailboxes to migrate but I get 20 mailboxes with errors. I've re-run the cutover batch time and time again and it's always the same mailboxes which give the errors. Capital Bytes have confirmed their web filters/proxy will work with other providers outside the emPSN network.

So chances are we will be sourcing our broadband from one of the providers who have already kindly supplied a price but in moving from Kcom to a different supplier does that mean we will lose our connection with emPSN and if so does it matter? Apart from some online freebies and the monthly newsletter I don't think we get any benefit from being part of emPSN.

Both of my schools have said emPSN are finishing soon so have passed it to me to sort out. I didn't think they are finishing just renewing contracts. The LA will be sending the new prices out soon but I expect it will have a long tie-in like the current contract that is 3 years. What broadband providers are other primaries using these days? We are on a 10Mb line which can be slow when a whole class use online resources so was thinking of something a little faster. Please feel free to PM with prices guys!

Thanks guys. I've had a quote from Comms Care which was half of what Dell want but it doesn't say what is covered so waiting for a detailed breakdown.

One of my schools has got a Dell server which is coming to the end of its 3 warranty. Dell want best part of £900 for another 2 years cover (2Yr ProSupport for IT and 4hr Mission Critical) so was wondering what or who other schools use when the manufacture warranty ends?

Thanks for the response. Being a primary the HP 2920 looks more in our budget. It would be nice to have better kit but there's no money for it and I will think myself lucky if the HP 2920 gets the go ahead. Right, after a lot of messing about trying to setup VLANS I've come to the conclusion we need a layer 3 core switch. At the moment we have a flat network made up from HP 1810, HP 1910 switches plus an unmanaged Belkin switch all linked by copper to a Netgear 7224 which is acting as the core switch . The maximum devices in use at any one time is around 200. To keep it simple I would prefer to use HP switches so they are all the same. Bearing in mind this is a primary school what core switch should I be looking at please?

@Steve21 Kcom look after the router and my first thought was just to enable one of the unused ports and have a second subnet, VLANed just for the phones.

So based on the above information what would be the best way forward for me as I don't have access to the router and no layer 3 switch. I really need something simple that a novice to VLANs can do?

Just wondering how many schools are having problems with Google not working under the Capital Bytes filter. When I spoke to Capital Bytes yesterday they said other schools have reported the same issue.

@Steve21 the reason all the phones are connecting to the HP 1910 is because it is the closest switch and it will still be used for connecting the PCs in that area. My fault for not explaining more. @FN-GM the layer 3 device is the router and planning to ask Kcom for another network address just for the phones and the new VLAN.

I've spent some hours reading the forums looking for information about VLANS. I now have a slight understanding but still not 100% sure that it will work as expected. What I'm trying to achieve for now anyway is to VLAN the impending 13 VoIP phones from the rest of the network. At the moment the network is completely flat /23 with 10 switches, 8 managed and 2 unmanaged in 5 cabs. The phones will all be connected HP 1910 which is connected to a Netgear 7224 which the router (Cisco 800 series) connects to. As the Netgear is only a layer 2 switch I wasn't sure what to do next but found a post about using an additional port on the router so I could use a different IP range. Please could you look over my plan and point out the errors Create a new VLAN on the 1910 Set 13 ports to use new VLAN and remove default VLAN from these ports Tag the uplink port with new VLAN and default VLAN On the 7224 create new VLAN with 1 port that removed from the default VLAN Tag the uplink port that connects the 1910 to 7224 with the new VLAN and default tags Connect said port to the additional port on the router How many mistakes have I made? We are going with the hosted Orbtalk system in the end, easier for me anyway but still need to setup the VLAN first. The cost per line is slightly more than we are paying Virgin but will be easier to add new lines when needed.
