Wow, so no-one else has had any issues with XP power schemes under server 2008 R2?

Thanks for your reply. I just can't understand why despite specifying a scheme in the student group policy it is not overriding the existing power scheme on the affected machines. I was really hoping someone could offer a solution which doesn't involve the install of another third party application.

Hi All, Hope you're enjoying the half-term whatever you're doing. Well I'm at work, and one of my tasks is to figure out why random student machines are adopting the portable laptop power scheme which causes them to go into hibernation (which is a total PITA as I'm sure you know). So far I have tried changing the scheme via powercfg logon scripts AND using Server 2008's power scheme setting tool under GPO>Preferences>Control Panel Settings>Power Options>New Power Options (Windows XP), and still the affected machines won't change their stubborn ways. I have also installed the CSE pack on the machines so this shouldn't be the cause - it should be pulling down these power settings from Server 2008 R2 GPO shouldn't it? I'd really prefer to roll out power settings via GPO if I can, as powercfg login scripts seem a real pain to roll out. The only other thing I can think of is once upon a time we installed EZ-GPO, and although back in the day it never worked, it seems to have worked itself on random machines in our student machines OU. I have tried deleting all traces of the blasted software (reg keys etc) but the scheme still remains, and I can't change every one manually. Any thoughts? Very frustrated (and apologies for SaG - I'm very high on caffeine.)

I like the playlist idea. I did think autorun but then read that Windows 7 doesn't do autorun anymore. So my plan might actually not be possible.

I'm making a compilation for someone for Christmas (like in the old days when we used to give friends proper cassettes), only this one is a usb stick disguised in an old cassette I found lying around my folks' house. So the person opens up what looks like a tape, they pull out the USB stick and it blows their mind (or that's the idea). Anyway, what would be really cool is when the plugged it in it automatically launched a player which played the music in the correct order, rather than the person having to faff around opening up folders and creating their own playlist. It would be almost like playing a cassette, where you just stick it in the player, press play and that was it. Has anyone got any cool ideas they can suggest to do something like this? Obviously if this is both PC and Mac compatible that would be an added bonus. Thanks

I wanted to create a fully isolated virtual network using a Dell Poweredge T110 II that was specifically bought for the purpose, in order to test out Microsoft System Center Config Manager 2012. Does anyone have any links or recommendations of any online resources or books that cover setting something like this up from the ground up? So setting up the host OS, then the virtual DC etc etc. I have been using tutorials dotted around the web but they're so inconsistent. For example, I found one on Petri.il which was great, got to the end of part II and that was it, no part III. I was left stranded with a tutorial that was abandoned over 2 years ago. Many thanks

I deleted my Facebook account a couple of years ago, but I still look at my girlfriend's if I need a laugh. What makes me laugh especially is how desperate everyone is to look popular, posting up picture after picture of them gurning drunken and bleary-eyed at a camera or vomiting outside a chippy on a night out surrounded by a load of 'friends' pointing and laughing. Freshers Week seems a particularly bad time for this kind of picture posting. I do like Twitter but hardly follow any famous people anymore. I use it as a tool to follow people with the same interests as me who I can really admire. I used to follow celebrities like Graham Linehan but in real life that man is a complete a*sehole. Another celebrity up his own backside that can't take criticism but can sure as hell give it.

Does anyone have any experience as to whether universities prefer a workforce with degrees on account of them being universities? I mean obviously non-technical/unskilled staff probably wouldn't be expected to have one (although I'm sure a fair few of them do), but for techy/skilled staff...?

Ahh, just as I thought. I guess they rely on the intelligence of the applicant to gauge whether they're suitable for the role.

So I'm currently looking for jobs in the higher education sector (IT support based) and I have noticed that many tech level roles ask for a 'degree or equivalent experience'. Does anyone have any idea what equivalent experience to a degree is, or does it depend on the employer? Is it three years, or five years or even ten? Do universities even look at applicants without a degree? Perhaps the 'or equivalent' bit is just a formality that means nothing? The thing is, I feel I have equivalent experience but don't want to waste my time filling in an application form if they're always going to look more favorably upon little Johnny Fresh-faced Graduate. Hi, Does anyone else have an issue with either Chrome or Firefox where browsing the web causes their CPU to max? I was playing a video in YouTube (or listening to one rather) whilst browsing in other tabs and every time I scrolled or typed in the address bar, the video playback would stutter and the CPU level would peak. The same happens if I'm using Napster which has a flash based player. I have Googled and there seems to be some reference to Flash, but I'm on the latest version and said reference was on an ancient version. Thanks
