At my old place we did a quiz on Survey Monkey for support staff (part of the Performance Management process) questions provided by our Strat. BM I then collated the results and sent it to the Head of (Teaching) ICT who came up with a 6 month 2hrs/fortnight training schedule. All in house. I was due to due the CMIS/ePortal bits, then I left. It was quite surprising how skilled the staff were. At my new place we've recently show teaching staff copy and paste between Word docs. No one had show them before, and there were hand re-typing whole paragraphs of data between one Word doc to another!!!

Shirt, tie, trousers and shoes with a smart jumper most days. Once or twice a fortnight a suit. That puts the wind up folks, as the Head will just walk past a comment "Well you're looking smart". Especially so if there's an event at school (external group in, a VIP being shown around or if I'm on a course representing the school) an extra effort is made. The VIP/guests may not talk to you, but being smart in the background helps the overall image of the school. Most male members of staff are chinos, trainers, casual shirt. Even the male members of the SLT rarely wear a tie. If I'm really, really lazy the tie comes off, and the comfy boots come on, but that's rare.

Well as a parked domain, they seem to be auto-forwarding you to their UK site. Anyone else noticed this, it worked until very recently. I've logged a call with Link2ICT to see if it is a blocking decision or something else. I could do with accessing a file that's been backed up!

Honestly I haven't got any IT qualifications (yet!) and have made it to Network Manager. A lot of experience, self learning and an honest desire to work hard to help the staff and students can make up for a lack of paper qualifications

I noticed this last week. Someone had connected via NetSupport without having to have authorisation, password protected the NetSupport config, logged my console session off and logged on with the Attix5 account. I've changed the Attix5 password and re-installed NetSupport and sure the flag for authorisation is checked. Like Tricky I like to know when someone is one the servers and for what purpose. Especially as our SLT have their work areas on there, it's a bit of a concern. I thought Link2ICT had to get permission from the remote site everytime they wanted remote access. It's always been the way at the schools I've had any involvement with.

I had a letter through eBriefing. Apparantly they are going to charge a small fee for their hosted webspace and.... Zimbra. Imagine having to pay for that! Seems like an better way to push through a migration to LiveEdu

Hello, Due to some phenominally bad server building before I came into post I am not entirely happy with my one and only DC. I have been considering just as an extra bit of backup to promote my admin server to a DC and replicate DNS/DHCP to allow logons to continue if my curric server falls over. I cannot off the top of my head think of reason not to do this, but I know CMIS and ePortal are funny things and there might be some reason why this isn't a good idea. Can anyone see any problems here? And no, getting a second curric server is not an option at the moment! /M

Thread Resurrection! I'm trying to get hold of one of these. Most of our resources are literally still on tape, and we need an easy way to transfer to DVD (without me spending the next decade doing it on a PC!). Any idea where I can pick one up from? My usual suppliers haven't come through on this.

Sorry for the thread necromancy. Is POP enabled by default on all Zimbra accounts. I've tried to tie mine with a Live@Edu account with no success, and even trying to connect Outlook at home is bringing up a POP not enabled error.

It varies dramatically, and I think that like teachers it should be standardised. I've worked with (and as!) Trainee ICT Technicians at £13,500 per year (52 weeks), ICT Technicians £15,6000 (52 weeks). Then as Senior ICT Technicians £17,800 (52 weeks), Senior IT Support Officer £21,000 (52 weeks) and now ICT Network Manager at the same grade, but slightly higher than I am now (52 weeks). I've know Network Managers to go from £16,000 up to £33,000. It varies so much, not only the work you're expected to do, but school to school. School A may pay a NM £28,000 and have far more expectations on time, work and responsibilities than a school paying an NM £23,000. I honestly though at least in Birmingham that Single Status would sort all this out. However my current school (Senior IT Support Officer) and my new school (ICT Network Manager) both treat the job as Scale 3, but obviously the NM role has far more direct responsibilities than my Senior job at the moment. Both jobs are after Single Status. It's all a mine field, and I really think there should be a national standard. Yes some folks do little for a lot of money, but a lot our colleagues work miracles and are paid peanuts by schools who demand the world from them.

I used to leave it running on my drive way, locked the gates. Now with the (sort of) new car I can get into a fully frozen car whack the fan on and the heated windscreen and it's clear within a couple of minutes. I hate de-icer, awful stuff.

Might be because of the new download service they've just made live. On the whole how is Sky BB? I'm currently doing it the very expensive, but best way of getting full TV through Sky and landline and internet through Cable. Sky TV being the best TV by far, and Virgin cable being the best internet. Obviously this is probably costing me £35 a month more than it should, and with Sky's ondemand service launching I think now is the time to move. All props to Virgin, but when you've had SKY TV, Virgin is just pants. My problem was that when I had Be* back in 2007/08 I was always having DNS problems connecting to websites, and I know my exchange is over capacity (how do I know, even my school is on it!). So if anyone does use it after moving from cable is it good, and anyone in Birmingham how is it in the big smoke? Tech_Guy I also found this out when BB went down a few weeks ago. I ended up using my iPhone tethering. If it happens again we have a spare 3G dongle at work from the eLearning Foundation (the only way to create student accounts and content filtering is with a dongle!) which I can run over and get. It's far too stressful to be without it!!

You're in luck my trusty Risc PC is still plugged in and working. As for the software I think you're going to be disappointed. I've asked on here, and at almost every local school and no one has any Acorn kit left. It all went in the bin in the mid-199s. Hell at my current school they even skipped RISC OS altogether and just had IBM Clones. Go to the The Icon Bar: Technology News and Resources and ask there. Labour never killed Acorn dude, they killed themselves by never expanding out of the education market and moving far too slowly with networking and digital media. I'd be a very happy techie if I could run 300 networked RISC PC 2s, they were all bullet proof. If you do need Acorn software let me know, I've got barrels of it. I've try a certain Bay where Pirates may go and search for Acorn Antiques (Yes mods delete this line if it's not subtle enough!) M
