  1. Zero tolerance. If its a classroom PC, which should be supervised, bill the relevant pupil/parent/teacher/department for the replacement at "commercial" rates, ie. the RRP of the mouse + £40 per hour or part thereof. CCTV is worth its weight in gold pressed latinum. Now we have our "on site" policeman back again, if I can identlfy the pupil, I will also refer the matter to him as "criminal damage". If its a "public" PC. like in the library (altho' we are getting an camera and spyware for these too), I remove the rest of the PC: as my users obviously don't want to use it, I have to respect their decision. Whilst EduGeek and I would never condone vigilante justice, the problem soon gets sorted, and the PC can be replaced. We now have all Dell kit, so I stick with their optical mice (badge engineered Logitech Pilots and as close as I've found to being indestructible. With my brand-conscious users, I've noted that it is the non-matching mice that seem to get abused the most. I've also taken to plugging the mice into the front USB ports. Then, if and when they get unplugged, the kids don't have to muck around with the back of the system unit.
  2. And sn*t on the readers.
  3. Why not sell your SMT on a trendy wireless one? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SCHOOL-HAND-BELL-IN-NICKEL-RECEPTION-PORTER_W0QQitemZ310000507239QQihZ021QQcategoryZ60655QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  4. According to the Code of Practice, "portable" is less than 18Kg and either intended to be moved whilst in operation (ie. vacuum cleaner) or which can be moved from one place to another (ie. toaster). Over 18Kg is either "movable or transportable" (ie. air conditioning unit) or "stationary" (ie. washing machine). "Fixed" is something that is secured in one location (ie. a towel rail). "Built-in" appliances have poor levels of physical protection, but this should be provided by the separate housing (ie. a built-in cooker). Then there is"handheld" (pretty obvious) Finally, "IT equipment" is a category all of its own because - as has been said above - it doesn't like having very high voltages applies to it to test the insulation. Within these equipment types, you also have Class 1 (an earth connection) Class 2 (double insulated, no earth) and Class 3 (uses a Separate Extra Low Voltage (SELV) power supply).
  5. O God. Accompanying a woman whilst she is clothes shopping. Only at least a 95% certainty of seeing her in them and then, fairly rapidly, out of all of them, would make me to ever do this again. Saying things like, "So, let me get this straight. Apart from the size, style and colour, its exactly what you're looking for" are not recommended. The question, "Does this make me look fat?" is, of course, the worst case scanario. "No, your arse and podge do that" is not the correct answer.
  6. Chlorophyll deficiency. Trust me, I've been on "Gardeners' World". OK, it was with a water saving tip.
  7. Those chysanthemums, sometimes called just "American Sprays", last a really long time - ie. weeks.
  8. I can't see anyone in our English department getting too far with these walking wounded from the OED!
  9. He's not wrong: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6548/index.html
  10. I intend to die quietly in my sleep ... and not screaming, like the passengers in the car.
  11. Reverse Darwinism strikes again. If anything does happen to anyone doing this, just think of the overall benefit to humanity of cleaning the gene pool.
  12. I remember when ... the Intel SC/MP was introduced.

  14. No you're not - one of our local schools has gone "academy" - its a mess before it even opened, but not doing so was not an option. They have a 2 hours SLA on laptops - if you can spend 2 hours on the 'phone to the helpdesk in Ireland, that is.
  15. Why scrap it? The trials have all been SO successful, it will save SO much money, the service will be SO much better ... Nurse!
  16. Does anyone have any idea what causes those discoloured stripes/patches, usually down one side of a projector display? Changing the bulb doesn't work.
  17. Open them up and tape over the INSIDE of the IR window.
  18. I had a "paid, but no item" problem with one seller earlier this year. I got my money back from eBay (less their administration fee). However, I still have a question ... Would eBay have gotten the full amount from the seller or would they have just refunded the balance from their own pocket? PS. I did ask eBay - they didn't reply.
  19. BAU, I'm afraid ...
  20. Now that would be an anachronism, and the production staff would never allow it. They would say, "Sod this, let's go and nick a CART then torch it". No-one will ever better Richard Greene, IMHO.
  21. So that's what a tech' is meant to do then!
  22. IIRC, its like sofware - you can copy it, but the original & copy cannot be used at the same time.
  23. Hopefully, the new school will have better fire proofing, fire detection and fire prevention systems. I assume the police will be checking all pupils' mobiles for suspiciously early footage of the fire?
  24. They'd just leave them in the back of a taxi.
  25. At least ours is a managed building, so I will only have to do the IT kit.
