Really? I didn't know that. Well, I'll still give it a good year after its eventual release.

We've been using Windows 7 since Summer 2012. I don't really want to even begin thinking about changing from it just yet. I would think we'll eventually miss Windows 8 altogether and move straight onto Windows 10. I'll do the usual thing of giving it at least a year from its release before we do though. Let it get patched up with a service pack or two before we adopt it.

Students deleting the contents of their own home drive
mulderite replied to Benmorgan86uk's topic in Windows 7
I agree with this ENTIRELY. I am fed up with students coming in saying "The computer has deleted my work" as if there's some kind of vendetta going on with the machines. USERS delete files, not the machines. It's those kind of comments that get fed back to the teachers and it makes our IT network look poor - especially if they start thinking the system is unreliable in keeping their files safe. -
Don't be put off, the medical level IS difficult and a lot of people have struggled with it. I'm on level 12 and I'm still enjoying the experience, although I do find it quite stressful to play, hence I'm only playing it in short bursts. As a previous poster has mentioned I also hope to get it done in time for the new Assassins Creed game. Can't wait for that! Hopefully that will keep me busy up to GTA V coming out late January 2015.

We've been using AppInventor for a few weeks but we're suddenly getting an issue with trying to connect to the emulator from within Firefox. aiStarter loads up fine and is listening on 127.0.0.1. On connecting to the emulator from the browser, we immediately get the error message "The application was unable to start correctly," on adb.exe. Inside the aiStarter window, we get the following text: 127.0.0.1 - - [03/Nov/2014 15:01:56] "GET /echeck/ HTTP/1.1" 200 30 127.0.0.1 - - [03/Nov/2014 15:01:56] "GET /start/ HTTP/1.1" 200 0 Problem checking for devices : status -1073741790 I wondered if anyone else has encountered this error? Thanks in advance..

I bought this at the weekend and I must say I thought it was simply fantastic! Then again, I was a teenager of the 80s so I could easily connect with the games and knew of most of the contributors in this documentary. I've still got my ZX Spectrum and my bread-bin 64 (and all the boxed games), so to hear the likes of Tony Crowther, Rob Hubbard, Jeff Minter & Simon Nicol (to name but a few) relating their stories of the 8-bit boom was a real treat. Just don't buy the Blu Ray version as it's priced at a whopping £50! I bought the standard digital download version instead for £9.95. With that you get a few extras, such as Matthew Smith talking about creating Manic Miner and David Braben discussing Elite. Solid gold.

As a lifelong fan of the original ALIEN movie this was a pre-order game for me. On release day I downloaded it and that night decided I'd jump straight in to play the 'Survivor' mode, lights off/headphones on - stupidly thinking 'There's no WAY that a game can scare me!'. A few minutes later I was ripping the headphones off and yelping like a lost puppy when the ALIEN first pounced. About 10 minutes after that I nearly had a heart attack when my partner came into the room and she tapped me on my shoulder... Great game, great atmosphere. Just remember to visit the loo before you play.

We've been using Google Sketchup 8 in school for a good few years now with no problems. Suddenly we have a rash of machines all spitting out this error when the program is launched: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application." The .msi we use installs perfectly fine on other machines, but even re-zapping it to affected machines doesn't solve the problem. Has anyone else experienced this issue at any point? I'm trying to fault find it but I'm hitting a dead-end.

If anyone else is experiencing the "Launch the aiStarter program on your computer and try again" error, I found the way around it was to set Firefox to 'No Proxy' in settings instead of 'Automatically Detect Settings'.. worked a treat and now the program communicates with the emulator perfectly.

I've been with BT Infinity for about 3 years now and whilst things were great for the first 18 months, I soon started experiencing drops in speed and wi-fi issues. I was positive it was the homehub that was at fault but BT insisted it was some other device in the house causing interference. After countless phone calls moaning to BT they finally caved in and sent me a replacement homehub (v3). Again this seemed ok for a month or so then the speed drops started happening again. Having finally reached my wits end with it I ordered an Asus RT-N66U and never looked back. Both signal and speeds have been rock-solid since installation, so I'd have no hesitation in recommending them. Homehubs are the devil's work. I don't like BT's method of pushing firmware updates onto them without your knowledge. Who's to say they're not 'breaking' the older model homehubs with a firmware upgrade (throttling bandwidth) to encourage you to spend £50 upwards buying the latest model!!

We sorted this with folder redirection (as previously stated) but we still get members of staff opening word/excel documents from email attachments and then working on them directly. When they come to save their work that message still appears (I guess as it's trying to save it to a temp folder on the C: drive - which we've restricted). If I had a penny for every time I've said to someone "Save the attachment into your work area and open it up from there," I'd have about £1.40p.

Greetings I've also been lumbered with this and I'm also having problems trying to get the online program talking to the emulator. Like yourself it just comes up with the message "Launch the aiStarter program on your computer and try again" when it's already running!! Please tell me you've found a fix for this? *grovel grovel*

This may be an obvious question, but have you tried compatibility view?

Starts tonight (Thursday). If not, I'll drink my tea through my sock!

Thanks for the suggestions. All of the gateway and DNS addresses are set correctly for the VLANS. I've looked in Active Directory Sites & Services and there are no subnets defined in there at the moment. Is it just a case of entering each IP range and scope we've used into the 'subnets' category?
-
As an update to my original post, we have now discovered that of the 8 VLANs in our network, ones which are assigned to use IP addresses from the second-half of a range (eg. 10.x.xxx.128 - 10.x.xxx.256) suffer the issues outlined above. VLANS that use the first-half of a range (eg. 10.x.xxx.0 - 10.x.xxx.128) are perfectly fine... has anyone else ever noticed issues similar to this when assigning IP ranges?

Hi everyone, If anyone can offer any clues to this weirdness I'd be very grateful... Over the summer we created a series of VLANs for each of our ICT suites. We now have a few weird issues with a couple of the VLANS. The first niggle is if a new user attempts to log on a workstation located in one of the affected VLANs - they do not get a new roaming profile. Instead their desktop and start menu are empty. If we log them on a workstation outside of the affected VLANs, the profile is created successfully and is sync'ed back when they log off, so they can then log on ok on the previous machine. Also, an external support team has configured our Moodle site to use LDAP SSO to log the students automatically into Moodle once they log into a workstation. Again, this is working fine apart from workstations inside the VLANs where we also have the profile issue. With these workstations the auto login to Moodle doesn't work. Ive looked at the switch/VLAN setup for the areas that have this problem and can find no differences when compared to other VLAN'ed areas that are working ok. IP helper-addresses for the required servers are in-place. Each VLAN has it's own IP scope, but again I can see no difference in the configuration of the scopes we have created (other than the ranges obviously!) I should say if a student uses a workstation in the affected VLANs and they already have an existing profile, they can use programs and access the network as we would expect them too. Everything seems fine apart from the Moodle auto login, so thankfully it's not causing us a HUGE problem. It's just an annoying one. Wall+head = bang

Thanks for the info Andrew. Unfortunately for us, that particular command didnt do the trick. However, we've since discovered that it was the Windows Search Indexing service that was stalling logoffs. Disabling the service on the affected workstation fixed this issue.
-
Andrew, Did you ever get to the bottom of this? We are starting to see exactly the same issue on a small number of workstations. I could literally cut-and-paste your original post and it would apply to our issue.

What a fantastic idea! Why don't I think of these things??

It turns out the 'Prevent changing theme' policy as mentioned in this post does not prevent a student from double-clicking a .theme and applying it into their profile, as we already have that enabled. It just means that once they apply the file they can't change it back! We're going to use Sted's suggestion of FSRM to ban them saving these files in the first place. Thanks everybody!
-
Using Software Restriction Policy? We use Ranger for the blocking of applications, but as that doesnt allow blocking of certain filetypes we've never had need to use Software Restriction Policy until now. Will look into it, thanks.
-
Interesting. I think this is enabled as I certainly haven't set anything to turn it off, but will double check and try that out. Cheers!

Anyone know of a workaround to prevent students using .theme files to change the windows theme under their profile? A small number are downloading high-visibility/horrendously coloured pre-defined themes and are double clicking them to apply them, only to find it cannot be reset under their logon restrictions, so we have to delete their roaming profile and let it create a new one to reset the theme. Thanks!
