Hi all Well here is an update have installed 41 igel 2110lx thin machines with 19"tft monitors on each took me 2 days to install them all and set them up to run on our pxe booted network for citrix connection. Totally cool now i dont have to worry about them for oohh at least 5 years baz

Hi All We invenstigated JackPC's about a year ago, in my opinion they are more suited to the financial sector and not schools, we talked to a representative about them and from what we gathered they are exclusive to a windows environment, big shame they could have made a killing in the thin client areas bu alas we have now gone with igel. regards baz

hi all My suggestion is kingston.com they have a nice little program for telling you what you can upgrade a machine too, you just run it on your machine and it comes up with the results. baz

Hi All This is caused by toshibas wireless management program controlling the adapter istead of windows controlling it. If the windows wireless manager is used it connects to the wireless system as the drivers are loaded so the login authenticates correctly. If however the toshiba management program is contolling it this program does not run until a user logs in localy to the machine. This is because the toshiba program is a user executed application where as the windows wireless program is run as a system application or process. Hope this helps, just tell windows to manage the wireless adapter in the wireless settingd and it should be ok. ps make sure the aerial is switched on too. bazuk

MY suggestion is to find another hard drive of same type as the one you need to get into, must be exactly the same, then carefully remove the control board on each hard drive and then swap them over, once this is done reassemble the drives and you should be able to access the info. This should work only if the second driver doesnt have a drive lock password on it. hope this helps baz uk

Hi All The best way i have found to clean keyboards is to use a foam cleaner and an air compressor, it really gets all the muck out from under the keys, a good antistatic foam cleaner removes the rest. Baz (humbled)

Hi all I dont know how you do it in windows network but in a unix system you can set up a pool for thin machines which point to a bin file to boot them into a thin client system then have another pool for the rest, usually done via mac address, this is because the next server option for the isc dhcp can be set locally or globally, you just run 2 tftp servers on differrent ip addresses one for booting thin the next for ghosting, means you cant ghost a thin machine but then why would you want to??? for our thin booting we use a pxelinux.0 bin file on the tftp server i have found its easier to ghost machines using a usb key with all the network card drivers installed on it in a little menu thing, this is easier as all our new systems allow usb booting via bios regards baz

We are currently demo 2 of their units, the first is a tablet pc for the electronic registration, trouble is the demo unit overheats so we have sent it back, shame, its was pricey thought. The second unit is happilly running our micro linux booting system for citrix connections, i want to see how hot it gets over the holidays so i can compare it to the hp units we already have. Well all i can say is nearly all of our switches are dlinks (almost 23) and we have had no probs except them being struck by lightening once, but i doubt the warranty covers that. baz

Hi Geof Are you saying if i flash the buffalo terrastation with firmware version 1.04 it will integrate into active directory. I must admit i tried flashing the units with current release wich didnt work and furthermore the flash utility was in japanese?? help regards Baz

Make sure the tftp server is starting in the directory where the initial boot file is, namely the preloader, this is what the clients look for first then they look for the kernel and finally the initrd image. Also did you add the dhcp option to the windows dhcp server, namely the "next server" option, which has to point o the ip address of the tftp server. regards baz

I have a question about the buffalo NAS units namely the terastation pro series, when it states active directory support what exactly does this mean, does it for instance use NT file format and utilize the NT securty model at both files and folder level. regards baz

Anyone have trouble with Buffalo NAS namely the terastation 1TB and 2TB models as well as the Terastation 2 units, The reason i am asking is that we have bought 2 of them as they say they are Active directory integrated, this is not the case they do not integrate with active directory at all as they are running a unit kernel too boot from. What they do is namely query the server for authentication and allow or disallow the user access to a SMB/CIFS share. I know the buffalo website obly states it supports active directory but the suppliers website who we bought them of off states they ingrate into active directory, as a result, the suppliers have refused to accept them as a return. The supplier in question is misco, they say they cannot accept them as a return as buffalo have refused to accept them. I dont get this at all, anyone else had the same problem??? baz

Hi #All I considered using 2x thinclients but found out i would need to pay them some money as we use citrix for most things it came to about 140 X £14. So we had to stick with our thin client system which is basically a micro version of the linux kernel with the citrix client embedded and executed from the init rd image. Works like grease lightening, intersting fact is our version is what the 2x system used to be before 2x got hold of it, the original writer was Diego Torres Milano from argentina his code is the core of the 2x system thinclient os. Since is code was released under the gpl thats why the thinterminal part is still free. i dont like paying for anything if i can get it for free. baz

Hi all I used to repair ibm thinkpads and the new generation from say 2003 onwards cannot be unlocked, we used to have some of them come in to the workshop and basically we had to replace the motherboards with unlocked ones and send the locked ones back to ibm for them to replace the flash roms. regards baz
