p.s current server is a hp proliant g5 dl380 blade with 3.35gb RAM 546gb hdd space currently using 233gb 5x146gb hotswap hdd's with 3 spare bays growth on the hdd space is not too fast

ok. I wasnt sure what you meant by running 2 servers on the box. On the NAS box? I was going to get a new server for a second DC, keep the old one, and have a NAS box seperate. For second server i was going to get a HP ProLiant ML115 G5 Tower Server In opinion would i be better getting one of these as a NAS also OR having this do both NAS and second DC with hypervisor OR building NAS with my own parts? The ML115 states only Raid 0,1,5 does this mean i can do 1+0 or not Thankyou v much for input by the way

Well i need it to be better than our primary schools current setup which is all the data on the DC. The DC has smart array raid5 hotswap drives its a proliant dl385 g5 i feel i need the central storage

Whats best way to get it raided? Do i just get a PCI raid card...i am thinking i will build one from in an older PC

So basically a NAS is a machine with 1 gig NIC in and 2 or more drives for RAID1? Thats it? All read/write is over the wire? Thanks

So i guess this removes the issue of having to transfer data if you take the DC down with the data on and saves replication of data if i was to have to copy all data onto another DC to take one down.

Better than NAS?(not that i am familiar with that either) I am very much a laggard If i was to get this server i would get a ram upgrade but also am interested in hypervisor and storage options Thanks

Hello, In the not too distant future i am going to upgrade our server from 2003 to 2008 R2 I have been asking about and have also decided to get a second DC as a backup. I am also going to use this temporarily to promote to primary DC whilst i change the upgrade on the OS on the current PDC. Now i am wondering waht people do about data migration, all the apps and shared drives and home drives. Do i basically copy all this over into same structure on the temp machine wjilst i take down the server (which has single partition by the way)? Could i do this by using NT backup's restore function to get all the structure... cause i do know that copying files is a pain if one fails halfway through and you end up wondering which copied and which didint. Just wondered how other people manage their data Thanks.

Hiya, When you say more than 1 VM do you mean more than 1 OS on the hypervisor, and if so, would it not be the main reason for running a hypervisor setup to have more than 1 OS on it? Or did you mean something else. Thanks

Just a quick question about whether i should look towards putting a virtual machine hypervisor on before i load my server 2008 OS To be fair its probably not really needed as its a small school network, but i like the idea of using the hardware for maybe another OS maybe unix and also the idea of backing up snapshots What would be best to use? i want something cheap really. Hello, Anyone able to install easiteach on windows 7? Seems its part of Abacus Evolve Resources and I get this Error 1720. A script required for this install could not be run. Am trying to look towards windows 7 on staff smartboard laptops.

Thanks, why is it saying x86 Family 6 Model 23 in 'system information' Also does the fact that its x86 or x64 only get determined by the CPU? Or is it the board too. Well of course i guess a x64 CPU will only fit on a x64 board
