I'm glad I'm not the only one finding this difficult... We're looking at licensing 4 physical servers (1 "physical" DC and 3 servers for our virtualised instances), so we're planning to buy 2008r2 enterprise licenses outright. Along with that, we were looking at getting the Desktop EES licenses to cover us for Windows Upgrade and Office, but we'd like to allow Staff to access virtual desktops from home...what CALS would we need to cover that?! Would the Enterprise Desktop licenses give us access to all the Hyper-v management tools, deployment etc, along with the licenses to allow remote access via RDS?

Thanks Chris, we run it on Ubuntu on the workstation we have running, but I battled for a day trying to get Ubuntu to play nice on Hyper-v and gave up. Hopefully someone more enlightened with show themselves!

Hello! We're trying to virtualise our fog server, which has been running happily for a couple of years on a standalone workstation. We're running Server 2008 r2 with Hyper-v over the top, Centos 5.5 has installed fine and I've got fog 0.30 installed also. I'm getting stuck when trying to upload my first image, it's giving me the "Unable to connect to the TFTP server" error. I've followed the instructions in this wiki with no joy Could it be related to Hyper-V? Any help would be very much appreciated!

We have WSUS installed on one of our DCs. Our Domain has been having a number of problems recently, mainly with replication and DNS, so much so that we're rebuilding from scratch in the summer and hobbling along in the meantime. Anyway, I've just installed WSUS on another server within the domain and WSUS on the original server seems to be failing. Would installing WSUS on a 2nd machine as a standalone affect other WSUS servers on the same domain? There are some warnings in the event log, but as we haven't tried to access the WSUS server for a few weeks, since our latest domain issues, I'm not sure if that's related...

Hello! Just been digging about in our server cabinets and found our Main GB switches all have the ability to take fibre connections. I then found some spare SFPs in another cabinet and thought, what if I stuck one of these in one of our 4200G switches and connected that directly to our Promise Vtrak E310fs, could we have ourselves a SAN thingy?! I'm not sure if that switch will talk directly to the Promise box?! If it will, any pointers on configuring the thing? Thanks! Ben.

I bought this Samsung just after christmas and it's excellent. Freeview HD, 1080p (which makes no difference unless you're 2 foot away from it or the panel is larger than 50" IMO, I only bought 1080p for the resale value if I decided to get rid) very fast response time for playing games, that was one of my main criterion and it looks great on the wall. Better yet, use quidco and get 10% off it too!

Hello, We've been running censornet on an old machine for about 6 months and we've been meaning to move it over onto a more suitable machine since we got it, anyway, a server became available, so we moved it across. We installed censornet fresh, then backed up our current config and restored it to the new server. It has a different hostname, but is otherwise a complete clone of the previous machine. We changed the proxy settings via group policy and everything was going swimmingly until a class used our Windows 7 machines. They were asking the user to authenticate as soon as Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox were opened. The XP machines and even the Macs have handled the transition fine, but Win7 refuses to play nice! We're using transparent kerberos for authentication. Any ideas? Thanks, Ben.

Beware of classes too, there are some issues with how switches negotiate power with devices. For example, one 24 port switch may have a total of 140 watts power to give to devices. If your devices are class 0 (don't negotiate and usually use draw the full 15.4 watts regardless of what they actually need) or class 3 (high power, always draw 15.4 watts) then you'll run out of POE by port 10... Other switches, usually the more expensive ones, have a full 15.4 watts available on each individual port, so you'll have no issues expanding later! Might be cheaper using a separate injector and swtich. PowerDsine stuff is nice and reliable.

Hi Skell, we've got 100+ of these netbooks, so replacing the wireless cards isn't really an option, due to cost and effort and the usb dongles would simply get stolen! Hi Pantscat, it's definitely a local issue rather than a ruckus problem, they usually detect wireless networks from over the road when they're working, but they're absent too when this issue occurs.

The card is a Realtek RTL8192E, running the latest driver.

Hello, We've got a ruckus wireless network and it runs perfectly. The netbooks/laptops often don't. We've got a load of Samsung NB30 Netbooks which every now and then don't connect to the domain. Logging in locally shows they're not connected to our wireless network and in fact don't recognise any wireless networks at all. The "view available wireless networks" page is completely empty. A simple "repair" of the wireless connection solves the issue and they connect straight away to the correct wireless network allowing the student to log on to the domain once we've logged out of the local machine. Is there a way to script that "repair" function to take place just before the login screen appears? Thanks, Ben.

Thanks for that, we're probably not going to add these to our virtualisation pool and keep it standalone for testing anyway. We'll be buying another new, full spec server when we do virtualise. We've only got £500 to spend on this test bed, you think this would be ok at that price? It's mainly for "learning" hyper-v running a mixture of Server 2008r2, Win 7 and Linux instances!

We're about to buy a testbed server for Hyper-V and have been getting quotes left right and centre, we know what we want/need for most aspects of the machine, but the variety of processors have left us baffled.. We've been offered Dual E5310s, Dual E5130s, Single E5310s and a couple of others, all for similar prices...We're running Dual 5420s in our two DCs at the moment, and comparing them to the quoted CPUs on a benchmark site, they appear to be at least twice as fast! What are the most intensive CPU tasks? Which of the above seem like the most suitable CPU? Any advice would be appreciated!
