I've run up a proof of concept, which runs nicely enough (Flash redirection and WMP video playback are fine) but ideally I need to soup up the graphics. Does anyone know if it will play nicely with RemoteFX if using Hyper-V as the hypervisor? I seem to be going round in a circle when searching, but it seems to suggest no.

The upgrade completely borked our Library Server. Missing videos, unable to upload, amongst other issues. Technical support seem to be incredibly busy, so we're going to rollback to get us up and running until we can revisit it properly.

I just wondered how they performed? Any obvious gotchas, limitations, good or bad points? I'm looking at them for space and power saving and would almost certainly be running them PoE.

Has anyone played with these in real life? They look the absolute business, but I wondered if they were too good to be true.

That's my one hope right now. Eventually replacing it, although a pain, is not as much of a problem if there isn't a ridiculous timescale associated with it. There are a couple of things that make no sense: 1) Why they would sell us a permanent licence until they found out we were a school. There's a buyout option for OVS corporate entities, but apparently not for schools on a 1 year OVS-ES. 2) The associated web services that were subscriptions are now given away free if your licence expires before the plug pull day (31st Dec 2015). So we'd get the filtering and malware updates we were paying for, free... but can't properly licence the software the updates are for?!... If anyone does have a couple of TMG2010 Standard licences down the back of the sofa that they'd like to sell, please drop me a line!

Sadly, we're not having a great deal of luck. Has anyone else actually managed to purchase or renew TMG recently, i.e. in 2013? The reply our reseller got was: "there is no option for a school... on an OVS-ES to continue to procure and use it..." They wouldn't even let us buy a copy outright.

Have you been told that you can keep TMG? I was told that we cannot continue to use it on a subscription basis, and it was withdrawn from sale on the 1st December 2012. At that point I had a good cry and ate an entire tub of cookies and cream ice cream as I wasn't planning on redoing the entire edge of our network from the receipt of the 60 day renewal letter. That's the biggest hurdle for us. If it turns out that we definitely can't get MS to extend it for us, from preliminary research we're going to need at least two products to get near to all of the functionality we've currently got with TMG.

What Cisco kit were you using? We use a WISM with a WCS Server and I've found it as sound as a pound.

For computer sciences we'd like to give students access to sandboxed VDIs as they'll need to be local admins for some of the exercises. The hypervisor itself would be connected to the domain, but the virtual machines running on it would only be talking to each other (or if we were to allow them internet connectivity there would be a an ACL on the sandbox vlan only allowing connectivity to the proxy box). I've found tons of articles about providing access to domain pools or domain personal desktops, but not what I'm trying to achieve. I haven't got a dedicated lab room, so I can't let them have a load of old PCs to play with. We've successfully used locally installed virtualisation software, but that limits the teaching to rooms it's installed in. In summary: The user would log onto the domain PC as normal. They'd have a connection to the VDI, but ideally not RDP as we're trying to emulate physical/console access. On the Virtual Desktop they've got local admin rights. However, they can't access the underlying hypervisor settings (e.g. can't create a new virtual switch). Has anyone done anything similar or could you point me in the direction of a guide/whitepaper. +1 for Spiceworks I just wish that there was more granularity in the admin levels rather than just Helpdesk Admin or Full Admin. Apart from that I love it.

That's very similar to how we've done it except we have the VM snapshotted so that it's boxfresh on every use. We map a shared folder into the VM for file transfer, but only programming students have access to it.

Do both at the same time without doing twice the work.. Many of the OU degree modules draw heavily on industry certifications course material so that you complete assignments for the OU that count towards your degree, but at the same time you do a lot of study and groundwork that you'd put into an industry cert. Are yours definitely affected? A few weeks back I made a call to Lenovo with the serial numbers of ours and not a single one was in the affected batches. However, they didn't show up as clear on the website checker. That came up with call support who then cleared them all manually over the phone.

So did that machine join the domain, but with a generic name? Or it got renamed but didn't join? Or it didn't join or rename?

How exactly are you prestaging? The variable you've got is correct. We use the GUID of Twenty 0s and then the MAC address. In ADUC turn on View->Advanced features. Then bring up the properties of the machine->Attribute Editor tab->netbootGUID attribute. What does it say. For me it's 0000000....MACADDRESS. Have the machines got netbootGUIDs that correspond to the machine or are they ? With Server 2008 R2 the option for prestaging wasn't available in ADUC when creating the computer account, but could be done from WDSUTIL on the command line. e.g. How to prestage a computer in Server 2008 R2? The end of the unattend file could look something like this: YOUR DOMAIN Join account password Domain Joining account YOUR DOMAIN YOUR ORG YOUR OWNER GMT Standard Time %MACHINENAME%

I think the networking would be as much of an issue as the spec of the machines. We use it in our language lab quite happily, but they are all cabled in at 1gbps. The main plus point of the Soloist/Virtusoso combo is being able to pair people/groups for real-time conversations. I can't see that working well in that scenario, and I don't know that they would even support it. Whilst you don't need the specific audio cabling of a "traditional" language lab, I'd say a cabled network is a prerequisite. If you go for their USB headphones the soundcard in the PC isn't really important, but it can add to the package cost quite significantly if you're buying one for every machine.

+1 for Freemake, but watch the new one (v3) when you're installing it or you'll end up with loads of toolbars.

It wasn't working as I can't read. On the VLAN that it wasn't working for I had missed the IP helper address in the VLAN housing the WOL server pointing back to the broadcast address of the VLAN housing clients. Looking at this properly jogged my memory. Cheers guys.

It can also be used to direct clients to a DHCP server. You can have more than one IP helper address configured on Cisco switches. We've got ones for DHCP and one pointing at our WDS PXE boot machine.

If you're using the Cisco gear for inter-vlan routing then you use the IP Helper command to point it to your PXE boot server. E.g. When used with a WDS server dishing out PXE boot resides in VLAN1 with IP address 192.168.1.1/24 and the client resides in VLAN2 which is subnet 192.168.2.0/24 you would enter the helper address under the virtual interface for Vlan2. (Edit: Assuming your inter-vlan routing is currently configured and working properly) config#interface vlan2 config-if#ip helper-address 192.168.1.1 I believe there's a similar command for Procurves if they're handling the inter-vlan routing, but the syntax may be different. ---------- WOL is causing me a headache at the moment as well. I have it working between 2 different VLANs fine. When I try and use it to wake up machines in a 3rd VLAN using the same ACLs allowing the same packets and protocol I get no joy. I know the packets are being sent because they're causing the ACL count to increment. The machines will also respond to WOL packets from within their own VLAN so WOL is working to some extent on the machines. If it didn't work at all I'd be less frustrated than having it work quite happily for one set of clients, but not another.

I thought 0.32 was the newest version? That's what I've used most recently and the images we made with that fell on their arse without running FOGPrep first. Nothing quite like deploying a broken image to brighten up my day :-) On the key front even MAK keys can be registered with a script if you haven't got KMS.

I'd be amazed if a school charging £30k a year had the cheek to fit 30 in a class. In most independents I've seen 25 is a big class.
