Where is the reg file to import? regedit needs to run in elevated mode and may not be able to access a network share. Can you do it with one or more reg add commands?

It's actually interesting to look at the distribution rather than the average and then target individuals who are using huge amounts of paper - what are they doing with it? There may be perfectly good reasons for what they're doing but there might be cheaper ways of doing it (could it go on a web site and never be printed? Can it be an SMS to parents instead of a letter home?) Just looked at the printer nearest to me; since January it's printed 21,000 separate jobs. 20 out of 100 staff using it printed 12 or fewer pages; 10 people printed over 2000 pages. If we were looking to save on printing it would make sense to target those high volume users - the bottom 50 used an average of 1 ream between them each month which is not worth worrying about. I'd love to be able to get rid of printers for regular use; if devices like the iPad make that happen them maybe Apple aren't all bad :-)

If you are applying changes which are "user" changes but you want them applied to "machines" then you need to setup loopback (and it is a pig ...) *and* do the security settings *and* apply the GPO at the right level. You could also look at WMI filters - this makes it easier because you can then say "apply the policy to these users if the machine is a desktop" (but not that the "desktop" detection logic only works well for Vista/Windows 7; there's no good WMI filter for finding desktops in XP [best I've seen is to look at DIMM type; if all your desktops have DIMMs and all your laptops have SODIMMs])

Actually, kettles is the one thing where an employer could complain. The radio probably draws just a few milliamps of current but the kettle doesn't - they're typically 10A and if lots of people are boiling lots of kettles then it all adds up (and electricity is wasted because people will put more than just a cup of water in the kettle so you heat up all the water you're not going to use that time, let it cool and heat it up again later!) It may not matter - if the alternative is someone stopping work for 15 minutes to go somewhere central to have a cup of tea then the penny it costs to boil the kettle is no big deal. If you think management is looking for reasons to get at you then I'd ask "is it OK to ..." - that way you're covered.

No - that's kind of the point of local users :-) You can have a domain account with the same name as the local account and give that account permissions in the domain (eg for mapping drives) but it may be more complicated and confusing than you want.

pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys? If you're not showing hidden/protected files then they won't be included in the size you're seeing. JDiskReport (JDiskReport) is one of many programs that will tell you where your disc space has gone.

Any errors from the time service in the event log? Add w32tm /resync as part of the machine start up script (shouldn't be necessary but it might just give it a kick)

I've been using this Converting VBScript to Windows PowerShell because I know a bit of VBscript and this helps convert to PowerShell. There's an awful lot of PowerShell which is completely different (the idea of piping objects through processes, for example) so I'm not making a huge amount of progress. I'd guess I ought to get a book and read it but it's not easy to find the time :-(

We're not likely to change to Kaspersky any time soon - not because there's anything wrong with it (from what I've heard from others, it's pretty good) but just because the hassle of shifting > 10,000 machines to a new virus scanner when a huge number of them aren't even joined to a domain is just too much :-))

I've got a Sagem (Sagemcom Digital | Sagemcom Freeview dtr67320t Set Top Box Spec HD Digital TV Recorder) which will allow you to copy to a USB hard drive and then make a DVD but it's pretty slow at "exportation" Would a media centre PC work? If you've got a PC they can use then a USB tuner costs about £30 (eg Dual Tuner Digital TV USB Stick : External PCTV : Maplin) and if you've got Windows 7 Enterprise then you're licensed for Media Centre and it can record and burn the DVD.

Take your lenses out then you wouldn't see what's going on - easy :-)

Don't know that I have the answers but I can tell you some of what we do that might help. If you bring your own personal laptop into Imperial and plug it into a socket you'll get connected to our "pre-registration" network - the only thing you can do at this point is go to an internal website where you need to register your machine (needs username and password). Once you've done that, you're connected to a different vlan and you have access to a range of resources (the internet, internal file servers and mail servers, for example) If you have a machine which is owned by College then it's registered in a slightly different way and it's on a different vlan; this time you have access to more resources (but, critically, not to the one for non-College equipment) The system is much more complex than this - for example I've used the term "vlan" when actually I mean "set of vlans" but the idea is the same. I've also left out wireless networks (we have several - one for members of College, another for academic visitors, one which is just the commercial Cloud network and so on) All of this took some setting up (we have some very, very clever people in networks and security) but it now works pretty smoothly. Some of the problems are not technical (we have a network for connecting what we think of as "insecure" machines; this upsets the people who work for the US Navy and have machines certified at their highest level but we tell them that they're "insecure" :-)) This is the kind of thing which is needed in every school (probably on a simpler level) but will probably never happen while we have every school doing its own thing.

Did they cover the Kaspersky Rescue Disk and, if so, did they talk about licensing? It looks incredibly useful (basically, it's a live Linux CD with Kaspersky on it but it will scan and fix a Windows machine). It seems to be aimed at the home user so I'm not sure if it's allowed to use it in education etc but if it is then I think it would be well worth having! Alternatively, if this isn't allowed, is there a version which is available for education?

You need to set the option "automatically expand to the current folder" under tools | folder options and then I think it will do what you want - at least for the first bit. Not sure what you mean about the derangedness (!) of the scrolling??

It doesn't work because you've commented out the line which makes it work ... What it's doing is recursively calling the DeleteSubkeys routine and you need that last line otherwise it won't delete the low level keys. I think you could do: if strKeyPath<>"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Connections" then objRegistry.DeleteKey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, strKeyPath end if but try this on a sacrificial machine first!

Why do you want them back in so frequently? I don't know how many you've got but getting them in every 2 weeks seems like an awful lot of work you're making for yourself?

Do you just have a C: partition on the curricsrvr3 box? If so, you can ghost it and expand the partition onto the new drive, take out the old drive and leave just the new one. If there's more than one partition then you can still do it with Ghost - it's just a bit more work.

I've tried this on 2 folders and it works fine but I had just created them and the permissions were "correct" etc etc. If you replace the * in the final line with (say) z* then you'll only move usernames beginning with Z so you get a chance to be confident. When you do the md e:\homes step you might want to add a cacls line to set the permissions properly at the top level. The next step shouldn't need permissions changing - you're moving so the permissions will move with them. Note that this is written as a set of lines to type at the command prompt. If you put them in a batch file you need to double up the % signs (so %%i instead of %i) @mac_shinobi; - I don't think robocopy will work (I did think about it; generally for questions containing the words "move home directories" the answer is "robocopy" but I can't see how to move stuff into a sub-directory of itself hence the convoluted swap I've used. Happy to be proved wrong :-)

Eee, young folk today, they know nowt :-) It is like Teletext and it's exactly like the viewdata systems some travel agents use(d) (do any still use it??) It's what we had before the internet; you received data at 1200 baud (so up to 10 seconds for the whole screen to be drawn) and data was transmitted back to the other end at 75 baud (but you did little more than type numbers so that wasn't too big a deal) It wasn't always reliable (as is the case with everything that uses modems) and I seem to remember it was quite expensive (unlike the French Minitel).
