Ooh have not used the Sim yet. Downloading now! Butuz
  2. I have a smartcache2 with safteynet universal and I can unblock sites or keywords by by going into the filtering tab? Butuz
  3. Last (first and only) time I had a holiday shut down the forest root wouldnt boot back up! SMT have never asked for a shut down since! Never shut your servers down - it just gives them the opportunity to misbehave!!! Butuz

I too am a bit worried that 2tb per box is not going to be enough for the next 5 years and can make a good case for going for the 4tb one instead of the 2tb one. As long as it is not massiveley more expensive. Will be looking to buy through Cutter next week. Also Phil - while your on "matching grant hero" duties - if you could get an Ultra 24 put on to matching grant (dual or quad core, not to fussed really!) - I and I am sure others would be looking to buy lots of them too! Already going to be buying servers storage and monitors - so why not make it the whole range! Will be buying at least two servers - if as DMcCoy suggests the Nehalems can be put on MG - I can make a good environemental case for moving to them too. All I need now is to negotiate matching grant on hot dogs from the canteen and I will be one very happy bunny! Butuz

Am I being ultra thick here - or is that page still linking to the actual firmware upgrade for the 7000 series rather than the vmware simulator? or is the sim included in the firmware update? Cheers Butuz
  7. Cheers Funky - nice to know I made the right choice and 500 ports can scale just a bit if needed Butuz
  8. Cheer mate have some thanks for that! All booked up! And hotel!!! Butuz
  9. Does the 7110 support Raid 6? Raid 5 with one hot spare will give you 1.752 gig and the ability to have one drive fail at a time. Raid 6 with two hot spares will give you 1.460 gig and the ability to have two drives fail at a time. Write speed is slower on Raid 6 than on Raid 5 though due to the extra calulations the controller needs to do. Read speed is just the same on 6 or 5 (bloomin fast). Butuz
  10. You can actualy use snap shots on DC's - the problem is you would have to both create, and restore the snapshots on all DC's at exactly the same time otherwise if the snapshot time difference is greater than 5 mins you will end up with domain controller(s) dropping off the network and losing replication. Basically, it can be done but it is very very dangerous, unless you have ultra tight change management processes in place - your better off not doing it at all. If you used fixed partitions at least you know exactly how much space all your C drives take up, and thus how much free space you have. If you use dynamic - you could end up with multiple servers expanding their drives at the same time and possibly running out of space (if you don't have much space free on the SAN). Butuz
  11. Yep - waiting on funding for new servers and will be virtualising all 3 of my terminal servers onto Citrix Xen. Be aware that virtualising terminal servers onto Xen/Vmware does have a performance overhead (i will be testing this to get exact figures), you may not be able to fit quite as many clients per server as you could before virtualisation but as long as you build this into your plans and possibly spec up your servers a bit - the benefits faaaaaaar outway the slight performance drawback. This is done alot in industry. My mate has hundreds of virtualised terminals servers on Vmware ESX serving thousands of users across the world - he is moving to Xen because of increased perfomance. He's currently fitting 60 TS users per Tserver virtualised with Xen and he loves it. (I think if i recall he was fitting 50 users per server on Vmware) Butuz
  12. Consolidate all your backing up on to one "backup server" using a big tape drive so that you can do a full backup of all 6 servers onto one tape. I am implementing here a Friday Full backup and Mon - Thurs differentials and 4 months worth of tapes. Butuz

Is it me or would the Edugeek Conference on 28 May be an ideal opportunity for you to take some of us aside and do the NDA group talk? Butuz
  14. It'd be an exceptional school that is able to teach pupils to use two computers to work on two different subjects at the same time Butuz
  15. And that's exactly how it should be! Butuz
  16. Hmm technet is something I've always looked at and thought "that would be handy" but never gone ahead to persuade SMT to pay for it. Maybe it's about time I did! As KS Asks - what benefits does it bering to you/your school? Butuz
  17. Planning on using 40GB for each server's OS partition here. Not converting our DC's over at the moment, so really I won't be using too much space on the SAN to begin with - just several C: drives for member and terminal servers. Butuz
  18. Oh well I supoose being in the pub is a good excuse!. I'll let you off! Butuz
  19. True - luckily most of the exams are for ICT and Business Studies and their both pie hot with the timetables etc.
  20. Mate are you a primary or secondary? Butuz
  21. thats two typos I've identified now for ya - sureley I deserve a thanked post for that? Butuz
  22. We create exam accounts here for each exam and manually enable/disable them based on the exam timetable the teacher gives us. It only takes 5-10 mins per day really and not something used often enough to need automation. Butuz
  23. Yep - it's a year by yer thing, slow but sure (unless your lucky enough to get a big investment all of a sudden). Its taken us 7 years to move from 1:7 to 1:3. Hope to get to under 1:3 by 2010. Butuz
  24. What??? Why on earth did he destroy the existing raid array by replacing both hard drives at the same time? He should have just replaced the faulty drive and then gone into the raid bios and set it to rebuild. Butuz
  25. ps - cant find the exact defenitions on Becta website but found this: So I think schools are expected to be better than 1:4.3 this year. Butuz
