  1. From the editor of the Spectator, via the BBC Live page:
  2. If you practice moderation and only handle one or two S video cables in a day, they can actually reduce your risk of cancer (cf: Daily Mail).
  3. I cannot fathom how this has happened. Even if Labour had held all its traditional Scottish seats, they'd still have been nowhere near. Really feeling quite depressed about it all this morning
  4. Are you talking about virtual hosts, here, not virtual guests? If so, you don't have a backup server, as such - you have equal partners in a cluster. We have two hosts with gobs of RAM & processor cores and each of them has, at any point, about half of the VMs. If one host goes down, the other host takes over the running of the VMs and they all run on that while you sort out your failed host. When you bring that host back up, nothing then happens until you tell it to - they'll continue to sit on the one host until you start live migrating them back over. There's no worries about data being written to two places because it's not, it's written to shared storage -- in our case, a SAN. I think 2012R2 has all sorts of new funkiness to let you do this without a SAN, though I'm not up to speed on that at the moment (we're on 2008R2 until next year, when these servers turn 5 and get replaced).
  5. I don't know about tablets, but honestly, Windows Live Movie Maker is as simple as it comes, still gives you good options, and free. We use it here (secondary) for more or less anyone who isn't a Media student or IT technician.
  6. I think that's just because you're running 32 bit Windows, then, the Wow6432node key is for x86 programs running on an x64 OS. Didn't even think about that, sorry!
  7. Maglev? Pfft. You lot are thinking so short term. We need hyperloops! (PDF) Because there's naff all else news they can actually report on at this point on polling day, yet 24 hour news demands they say something. See also: "the royal baby has not yet been born" for a full week each time.

  9. I know you can lease, but it does end up costing slightly more overall than outright capital purchase. But beggars can't always be choosers. I can PM you details of the company we've been talking to (and who will be our managed print provider from October) if it's something you want to discuss. Ignore that, I already told you a couple of weeks ago didn't I?
  10. This is part of the VBScript I wrote to update from v7.00.24 to v7.00.30, run as a startup script via computer GPO. You need to find the ID for the installer, to look it up in the registry and then uninstall; if you open up regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ you can run a Find for "securus" and it should come up. The key name will be something like {11B677BC-75DC-42AB-8FF1-034E93FD0C56} - that's the ID for v7.00.24 that I've used below, so anywhere that key pops up in the script, replace it with what you find. ' regCheck from http://jagspage.wordpress.com/2013/04/08/check-if-a-registry-key-exists-using-vbscript/ Dim oShell Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Dim Value, StartupKey, startupKeyName, startupKeyValue startupKeyName = "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Securus Network Client" Function RegKeyExists(Key) Dim entry On Error Resume Next entry = oShell.RegRead(Key) If Err.Number = 0 Then Err.Clear RegKeyExists = False Else Err.Clear RegKeyExists = True End If End Function ' v7.00.24 = {11B677BC-75DC-42AB-8FF1-034E93FD0C56} Value=RegKeyExists("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{11B677BC-75DC-42AB-8FF1-034E93FD0C56}\") If Value=0 Then ' v7.00.24 installed, need to uninstall then install newer version StartupKey=RegKeyExists(startupKeyName) If StartupKey=0 Then ' startupkey is in place, need to remove & restart to let this script run again without software running (else can't uninstall) oShell.RegDelete startupKeyName oShell.Run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe /r /t 2" Else ' startupkey already removed, uninstall oShell.Run "TASKKILL /F /IM securusn.exe" oShell.Run "msiexec /x {11B677BC-75DC-42AB-8FF1-034E93FD0C56} /q" End If End If EDIT: whether or not that will work given your particular error message, I don't know... I wonder if trying to reinstall from the MSI would trick Windows into realising it is installed, thus allowing you to uninstall.
  11. Here's some interesting stats related to an ongoing discussion in this thread, as taken from one of my links earlier:
  12. A vote for Vetinari implies the possibility of a vote against Vetinari , and as such cannot be comprehended. Vetinari just is.
  13. Further discussion of the austerity myth: Britain: For the Love of God, Please Stop David Cameron | Benjamin Studebaker (and a follow up post @ 13 Terrible Tory Counterarguments | Benjamin Studebaker) The IMF themselves have declared austerity to be a failure. Why do all our politicians keep insisting they know better?
  14. That's no way to talk about @Pete10141748's missus!
  15. Apparently Horncastle & Louth have been Googling Nicola Sturgeon, which won't do us much good. Maybe people are Googling Farage to have a good old laugh at his smug, smug face? All the silly things he's said? Maybe? Please?
  16. It don't half tell you a lot about how uninspiring this lot are that none of 'em can win a majority against the rest of 'em. Has there even been such a paucity of charisma, character and intelligence about the political class?

  18. They're great machines. I wrote a ton of guff about them: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/152938-hp-officejet-pro-wide-array-ink-printers-super-boring-review-me.html And that is a great price. Can't speak as to whether they dry up or not, not had one in long enough, but they perform no end of automated maintenance, can detect when a nozzle is blocked and compensate for it with nearby nozzles, and use a different ink formulation anyway to allow them to print as fast as they do, so ink clogging may be irrelevant altogether.
  19. UKIP candidate Robert Blay suspended over shooting threat - BBC News So at what point do we all agree that UKIP is stuffed full of racists and bigots, no matter how often Farage tries to claim the contrary?
  20. Guys, if we scrap Trident, what is Bruce Willis going to use to save us? A gentle nudge with a nuke: Deflecting Earth-bound asteroids | Ars Technica
  21. Wait -- maybe we've all underestimated Rupert Murdoch -- perhaps, despite the convincing appearance of evil, he is actually a noble warrior defending us from the threat of apocalypse! For how can SkyNet ever be born if the EU Trademark Court were to give Sky precedence over the name? Rupert Murdoch is Kyle Reese
  22. You now get the new Batman: Arkham Knight game as well. Which is as good a game bundle as I've ever seen. NVIDIA Updates Spring GeForce Game Bundle - Adds Batman: Arkham Knight
  23. Seriously? Has Rupert Murdoch just bought and paid for the EU trademark court? Microsoft had to rename SkyDrive because Sky had once had a service (that no-one had heard of) allowing their broadband customers a paltry amount of online storage by that name, and now this? Skype is a far bigger brand than Sky -- not only international, but so common that it's a verb used by non-tech family members.
  24. Some of you lot do much more meaningful things in your spare time than I do in mine :/ Once the kids are abed and the maelstrom they leave behind is tidied, in order of time spent: Writing short fiction (SF/Fantasy) & reading lots Homebrewing, mostly wine (just drinking some very nice bramble) and occasionally beer when a party is planned LARP, in a local freeform group. One of my friends has an acre or so of land and has built an entire medieval tavern and a series of smaller huts. Photography, mostly of the kids these days (I <3 my 35mm prime lens) What little gaming I can squeeze in between all that Sadly, some hobbies have fallen by the wayside because at some point I do need to sleep, so I no longer fly in EVE Online, or game in Warhammer/40k, or snowboard (don't have the money for that anymore).
