Hi all, New website up and running: Heald Place Primary School A bit sparse at the mo, but will be adding content all the time (if the teachers ever decide to give me any). It's a Joomla 1.5 site, using a template generated in Artisteer (bit of a cop out I know, but being as I didn't get paid anything extra and it's my first website thought I'd keep things simple). Please let me know what you think, and let me know how it runs in IE from your end. Seems to be slow in IE8, especially when loading from my win7 machine at home, but superquick in firefox. - probably to do with the Artisteer template. Anyhoo, would really appreciate your thoughts. p.s I know the logo leaves something to be desired, it was only supposed to be a rough mock up but the head went ahead and ordered stationary etc with it printed on so think i'll have to leave it...*sigh*

let them play games...not your problem. Unless it is causing issues with your network or anything else you manage, its the teachers responsibility.

they call me "mr John", "Mr Dentons brother" or "Mr Low" - Mr Denton and Mr Low are the only male teachers in the school. The nursery kids often call me "computer-fixer-man" and they all believed me when I told them that I was from computerland and that I fixed them by magic cos "i come from where computers are born, so our magic is the same"

Bit of both. People should secure their networks if they dont want people listening in, and google should be more careful about what information they collect. Personally it worries me just how much data google do collect, and what can be done with it. I think it was a new york times journalist who managed to identify a particular person from 'anonymous' ip logged searches that google records. but then again, i'm paranoid

Yup cos then it would work. I can't really see any practical applications of the ipad at home, nevermind in a school. The only use I can see is for lying down on the sofa whilst watching tv and browsing the internet (so long as you don't like flash), and our kids aren't allowed to lie down in school. Perfectly willing to be corrected tho (i haven't read all the posts so forgive me if someone has already extolled its virtues for a particular application)

Especially now there is a video advertising the fact...

I never did above my 7x tables...and I still cant LOL. My mental arithmetic isn't bad and I can make pretty good guesses at most sums. For everything else there is a calculator! Although showing your working is a pain (I used to hate it), it's actually very useful for teachers, and ultimately kids. It shows exactly where the kid has gone wrong, and whether they just need to concentrate a bit more, or whether they need to be taught the whole process again. I'd prefer the guy who wrote down all his working. In a process like bridge building the working would be checked over by several people to make sure it is correct - no one would trust a multi million pound project and the lives of many people on a number one guy (no matter how intelligent) has plucked out of his head. Ridiculous scenarios aside, it is good practice and well worth doing, everyone makes mistakes now and again and you (or someone else) can always spot them if you have shown your working.

Well said that man!! And as an extra point - I've never seen our polling station so busy before. Last election we walked straight in, queued for ~2 mins. This time waited for 40 minutes. It don't think it is unreasonable or stupid to base ones plans around previous experiences.

the wire, the wire, the wire. last season is not as good as the others, but still worth a watch. Season 1,3,4 are my favourite bits of TV ever

i had it about 4 times in a week from the same student. turns out that she thought u opened docs the same way you saved them...every time she tried to open a document within word she overwrit it with a blank document...LOL. She was in at lunchtimes redoing all her work for a week. I would have felt sorry for her but if you can't follow instructions, and can't make the connection when being told to OPEN a document to click open well...

Nice job sysman. I have just redesigned our school logo (based on a design agreed by other people...not my choice). Do you know of any good monospace fonts preferably serif?

Self taught A+ (got the text book, read it, took the exams), GCSE IT...which obviously counts for a lot . Been working as an IT Technician in a primary school since the end of November (although employed as a teaching assistant). Degree was in Biology.
