I've had none...don't break up till Friday tho so here's hoping :S. I did get a snickers today from one of the TA's, but this was less a present and more of my winnings from a bet. She claimed she couldn't log on, I said if I come all the way down and you can log on then you owe me some chocolate...she owed me some chocolate. Maybe I can pretend its some kind of festive snickers, paint the wrapper red or something. Last year I got one card which was from a student.

i've got an ACER 1825ptz which is a capacitive touchscreen laptop. I agree with you - Win 7 just isn't up to scratch compared to other OS's but like you say you get used to it. battery doesn't sound great tho with the latest laptop offerings from ACER (including mine) and others doing 8hrs+

Hi all, We are having problems with DVD codecs at our school - specifically the sound on certain DVD's. We currently have the k-lite codec pack installed on all our machines, but the sound doesn't work on certain DVD's. On some DVD's it doesn't work at all, on some it works for the adverts but not the main film, and of course on some it works perfectly. It seems to be at least partly permission related, as it works for the admin account on all. As a test, I installed the cccp codec pack over the top, logged on as a member of staff (they have local admin rights, they just don't know it ), and it works. The codecs were originally installed as the domain admin along with all the rest of the software and then imaged. All other videos tested so far have worked i.e. avi's, mkv's etc, its just the sound on certain dvd's. What codec packs do you guys use? and how are they set up? Any and all ideas are appreciated thanks

I used to thinkthe same but their new models are really nice... We bought 15 of these - Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ review | Laptops | Reviews | PC Pro - at the end of last year for the kids to use. Nice and slim, 9 hour battery life, lovely metal finish. The rest of the range are the same but more powerful, I think the timeline X series are their newest. edit: we got the 4GB version

Right now i'd buy an Acer. They've really stepped up their game design wise with some high quality finishes, plus great battery life, performance and overall value. You know with Acer that you aren't paying for the name...

Don't you guys realise that Apple products are PERFECT in every way...they just invented this amazing thing called "FaceTime" where you can chat with your mates by VIDEO. Its such an unbelievably brilliant idea I don't know why no one had thought of it already...MAGICAL

My mate does it at his work (outlook). IT emptied his trash...restore from backup.

We redirect virtually everything on the kids laptops - start menu, desktop, my docs etc. When working ok this is great, but when we have wireless issues the laptops become unuseable as it can take 5mins to get 2 items deep in the start menu lol. I'll get onto our reseller to see if they have a Ruckus account to get updated firmware. Thanks for all the help so far.

Is it possible to update from behind a proxy? The "check for updates" button returns "Unable to connect to the Ruckus Wireless Update Server. Verify that you are connected to the Internet, and then try again." I can't seem to find anywhere to input the proxy info either...

Right, sorry for not replying earlier. Just managed to track down the ZoneDirector login info - not logged into it before. Mesh mode is disabled. Absolutely no idea, where would I find this info? Thanks for all your suggestions. You may have noticed wireless networking is not one of my strong points (tbh I dont have many strong points). As far as I am aware, the AP's are cabled in. I think the setup was a pretty default one, DHCP is off etc. The only thing I have done with it is reset it every ~1month, as it seems to "clog up". Gets to the point where a class of kids using 15 laptops take 10-30 minutes just to log in, and then its virtually impossible to save to network drives etc. A reset seems to cure that. This is however the first time I have logged in to the ZD, so maybe I can do something with it :S

Howdy, Having some issues with offline folder sync (not working on a handful of laptops), and in my search for a solution I was looking at the DNS and noticed we have no reverse lookup zones configured. We are a primary school, 2 servers - 1 DC running DNS DHCP etc, 1 app server with antivirus, altiris etc. a) Do I need reverse lookup zones? b) Could they have any effect on offline folder sync? I don't know much about DNS, other than roughly what it does. Is this something that would be straightforward to configure, or am I going to break everything...? Cheers

haha makes sense. I went to watch a game in Oakland (oakland somebodies versus somebody else...it was a big game apparently). There was a guy in front of us filling in a sheet with all the details of the game, and working out batting averages and all the rest. You ever been to Oakland nephilim?

win 7 x64, ssd for OS installation. Got an ssd for mine recently and the performance difference was amazing (on an i7 machine with 6gb ddr3). I don't use the ssd for games, just the OS and photoshop etc (which loads in < 2secs now ).

In american football people often lead in with the head = broken neck if no padding. The padding is there because they hit harder. Rugby is still a tougher game overall, plus its much more exciting as it flows (no pauses while they sub the entire team). Baseball is the single most boring sport I have ever watched.

nope nothing special. All switches are 10/100 at the mo, but we have purchased gigabit replacements - waiting till half term to put them in. That should help with overall throughput, as the zonedirector is downstairs, and the servers upstairs - all wireless traffic upstairs has to go downstairs to zonedirector, then back upstairs to servers etc, with upstairs and downstairs connected by a single cat5e cable. The cabling etc in the school isn't exactly mapped out brilliantly and sometime in the future i'm looking to ask the head to see if we can reorganise...but tbh I doubt he will go for it. With regards to the signal in the room in question, I now base myself in a similar room at the other end of the school. To all intents and purposes it is a mirror image of the other room, and so I would expect similar problems in here but I have none. I get perfect signal, and a constant 65mps throughput.

I wasn't at the school when it was intalled. I gather that a site survey was done, and we were told there wouldn't be anywhere in the school that wouldn't be able to use the wireless. This is not true...there are places above the access points which can't get signal, but I would expect that anyway as the AP's broadcast down. The school walls are generally thick and brick, some concrete, i think it was built as a hospital in the 30's. Just seemed strange that can get excellent signal strength, but the bandwidth is so low and changeable. No doubt you are right and it is interference, just wondering if there are any settings that can be changed to improve it. The room in question is ~10metres from the access point in the corridor, but in a straight line there are 2 walls in between. I used to be based in that room, and used a laptop with wireless G which didn't seem to have many problems. This particular one is on Wireless N and the bandwidth jumps from 6-65mps and everything in between constantly. I tried with a wireless G laptop today as well and it simply wouldn't connect - signal strength was very good but wouldn't receive an ip.

Howdy, Having a few problems with our wireless system. Essentially, in certain places in the school, we get very good signal strength, but the bandwidth varies from 65mps to 6mps (laptop is wireless N capable). It seems to continuously drop and increase, and as we redirect documents etc it makes a big difference to the usability of the laptop. We have had quite a few issues with our wireless (requires resetting every so often or the whole thing grinds to a halt). We have 6 access points in school, 3 upstairs 3 downstairs and you are never further than 15 metres from one. Everybody seems to rave about the ruckus system which leads me to believe there is something wrong with ours... Any suggestions?

If it bothers you, write your own. They will never give you one as chances are they have no idea what/how/when you do what you do. Im in the same boat - employed as a TA - and still haven't got one after a year.

Howdy, We got a load of visualisers on the HTG this year, which I have been setting up. They work fine for all computers I have tried them with, apart from 2 laptops. Both laptops are Toshibas with ATI x1200's. The way they are set up is with the projector plugged into the visualiser, and then a cable from visualiser to laptop. The laptops wont recognise that there is a second display plugged in (works fine for projector only), any ideas? Tried updating drivers etc but nada. They work fine with desktops with ATI graphics, and fine with laptops with intel graphics. Anyone else experienced this or something similar (with or without visualiser)? Cheers
