  1. the £400 is from the courier... im getting nothing for acer despite the fact that they've been horrible, and wasted days of my life The contract for repair was with Acer. By law they take responsibility, they pay out and claim back from the courier. So, You can accept the £400 in part payment, and then take them to court for the rest. Make sure you write to them to say that this is accepted in part payment though.
  2. Cant force you to do anything, They can offer, you can reject and take them to court. Dont get fooled by a "similar spec PC" its like for like, so you would reasonably expect the same quality and spec. Just because this years model is faster does not mean you have to settle with an inferior product. So find out how much it will cost you to buy another laptop of the same brand and same line as the one they lost and stick to your guns. Dont like those apples? Give me my god damn laptop back then!
  3. Write a letter. Formally asking for your laptop to be returned or a cheque for the full cost of a replacement. Give them 7 days to comply. After 7 days write again threatening to take them to the small claims court giving them 7 days to comply. After 7 days, go to your local civil court, get the forms, fill them in, pay your £30. Its as easy as that. its not that hard, and it does get results. So far this year we have won 7k in bank charges and a £500 deposit back from a crook garage.
  4. Server 2003 hacks has a script to do this, but then again spiceworks does this and makes it look pretty!
  5. kiss, Keep it simple stupid (had this drumed into me a lot) Answer, cut and paste the second PPT into the first, job done in 15s.
  6. Nailed it with Filemon. It seems that instead of going straight to the my docs folder share on the server which has the corect permissions, it goes through every folder in the entire structure. So mine is organised >students home area (share) > userarea > entry year > student name. The userarea folder within the share did not have access defined for students, there has never been a need and it stops the year 6's being curious. So photo story was checking each folder through the path to see if it had permission to access that folder, access to students home area? ok. Access to studentshome area/ user area? Nope, throw hissy fit. Instead of going to the complete path in one hit, which would be fine as the security setting are correct, it goes through this awkward multiple checking route.I have only had one other program do this, the question has to be why do it this way? I hope this makes sense. And no I have no idea why it only affected 6 students
  7. I klike the ones that involve something not to do with the network. Something like every morning the admin network goes down for 15 minutes but is up and running again when you get there, what do you check? Answers should include asking if someone is moving stuff around / unplugging stuff. The comunication side of things is very important. Also, I need a logon script written, what steps would you take to complete it. I would expect an honest reply to include looking up on the internet to see if someone has written one before. Anyone who says that they will sit there and puzzle it out the hard way would be a be a bit of a no no. Also, I would throw an unanswerable one in there too, something that no sane person would attempt to see if the come through with the bull or the honesty. But then again I am an evil sod.
  8. I am looking into it again, Current thinking is that it might be something to do with windows\temp folder. file mon is next. But its a bit of a strange one since its limited to 6 kids. Oh and deleting profile and user area including local cached one does not help
  9. Does it work, version 0.06 does not inspire confidence 8O
  10. Quake 2! Still plays well today, it will run of a network share and plays well on anything built the past decade.

What is termed good for £80 that runs crysis? Well I know this guy down the pup that says for £80 he can get you a pair of 8800GTs But point taken, I have a 7900GS which is a year old, Hellgate London sucks on it, just so slow on decent quality settings. A 8600GT is about the same sort of speed for £80 This card will run battlefield 2141 at 1600 x 1200 (20 inch high res tft) on mid quality settings without fuss. Point being there are a lot of games out at the moment that the programers have not optimised for speed. If you can do amazing things on a xbox360 with 512mb ram and a 3 year old graphics card, getting things running smooth on a PC should be easy.
  13. The problem with Real Alternative is that it breaks Real's copyright by simply distributing the Real Networks DLLs - http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=68399 has a comment from Karl Lillevold from Real about this (check the properties of the DLLs if you want to see the copyright message) The normal Real Player download has a long and detailed license agreement but it's pretty clear that you can't download and install it to a master image (as most schools would do), you can't put it on your own intranet for install (which might be an alternative) and you need to fill in an email address etc for each person who's going to use it. What you probably need is Real Player Enterprise (http://www.realnetworks.com/products/rpe/index.html) This used to be very expensive (thousands of pounds!) but there now seems to be a free version. I'm not a lawyer and I now have a headache from trying to make sense of the license agreement but it might be possible to legally use this on a school network. This is why its a dead codec. Is it just me or are there real problems with the way certain customers treat their users? Its only a codex afterall, its no better than wmv or quicktime. As far as I know there are only a few sites that still use real player, I only include the codec on my network to stop the odd complaint from teachers who dont know better.

Cost of upgrading? Quad core chips for £160, dual core fast chips for £40, mobos for £35, Good graphics cards for £80 and 2 gigs of ram for £60? Never been cheaper, you can build an xbox 360 beating rig for much less than £200 including a good HD.
  15. Try real alternative, its the codecs without the bloat and spyware. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

    Sad :(

    Because their frame rates suck.
  17. Agreed its the same stuff here and there, I used to live in hamburg and its nice to get the stollen this time of year.
  18. Torture ok? No, unless its your closest allly doing it. What annoys me is that 550 each year are killed on the roads due to drink. 3000 on the roads for various reasons. 50 due to guns. 78 due to terror attacks. Which ones get the most headlines? Oh and contrast to the deaths in Iraq 55 per day last year. but yeah we really need more terror laws and more anti gun legislation rather than vote loosing lower speed limits and no more oil wars :?
  19. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikey It means the same as chav nowadays. Meaning has morphed along with a lot of other words over the past 20 years.
  20. In fairness that's true if you're talking about the usual bog standard scenario, ie: sits in a classroom, barely gets used, teacher doesn't know how to change cartridge, it sits and dies and lo you have a paper weight. ... but if the teacher in question uses it regularly, stores it properly during the summer (ie: somewhere out of sunlight, preferably somewhere cool) and changes the cartridges when they need to be... then they can work well. All this aside, I'd still say go with the mono laser. Now the bit about if the teacher looks after the printer made me laugh so hard I blew coke out of my nose.
  21. Hp bootable drive utility http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/23839.html this needs a little fiddling, cant remember if floppy emulation or HD emulation works best. and a little prog for making images of floppys. (all my ghost disks are created from the images). http://www.chrysocome.net/rawwrite The images it creates can also be used for nero boot disks.
  22. NEVER BUY INKJETS! Lasers dont mind if they are only used once a month, never dry out and will do 3000 pages before you need to go back to refill them. Inkjets are junk.
  23. http://www.videosift.com/video/Stephen-Colbert-So-Youre-Living-In-A-Police-State You have no rights and you need to embrace a different definition of privacy.
  24. I refill all our laser toners myself.
