  1. Might be worth looking into one of the Epson models with a continuous ink system. Would save you a fortune in the future.
  2. Another vote for the Brother HL2030, though another option would be the DCP7010 which only costs 40-50 quid more but scans/photocopies as well.
  3. Before you do anything, put Ghost on the other server and take a copy of the one you want to rebuild, just in case
  4. Could try from another angle and deny the executables in a policy under User Config/Admin templates/System/Don't run specified Windows applications: taskmgr.exe, regedt.exe/regedt32.exe, and cmd.exe
  5. Computer config, windows settings, security settings, local policies, user rights assignment, deny logon locally
  6. Been where you might be heading and would never want to go there again, I'd quit before it happens again. Had no end of grief getting anything done because of the constant conflicts I would come up against because the ICT teacher decided something was more convenient for him even if it screwed things up for everybody else. Best one was his home folder that become so big that the backups failed due to lack of space (he was single handedly storing 44gb of crap, twice as much as the other 200 users combined). Had to take his files out of the backups so that the others would fit because he refused to delete anything, and he refused to cough up for additional storage... you can guess what happened and who got a bollocking for it. The irony is that he spent 1500 quid on software he never used whilst an extra hard drive would have cost £50 and would have saved his ass! Don't compromise, it's not worth the grief you end up with!
  7. Thanks chaps, Thought it might be a bit easier for swapping out backups and save having to log on before removing it, but looks like I'll be sticking with plan A which is the Stardom U6 jobbie that really is yank-it-out and chuck another in...

    PC Hanging

    Longshot, but it's not a Dell sx270, gx270 or gx280 is it?
  9. Can somebody confirm whether you need to run the Safely Remove Hardware Wizard when unplugging a drive or is it hot-swap as in, yank it out? Cheers
  10. Scanning the pics may be acceptable depending on the quality of the prints, and how important they are to the teacher. They will almost certainly be worse quality than scanning the original negs though (assuming a half decent scanner in the first place) as there will less latitude for changing colour and other image settings (as the print will already have been modified and had it's line resolution reduced). It will take longer to clean up scans from the negs if you don't have Digital ICE on the scanner which uses infra red to detect the presence of dust.
  11. If a normal PC setup is an option, may want to consider one of these: SMART - DT770 Can be used with pen or finger, and on that basis is presumably more robust than a bog standard stylus-based device.
  12. Tested one over the weekend with a 20" jobbie, it doesn't! BUM! Looks like a new computer with gfx card to go with it *grumble grumble*
  13. Any recommendations? Preferably with mic input, manual focus override, hard drive or solid state...
  14. Not entirely sure. Our largest monitors are 19" jobbies. I know that the built in graphics will do 1600*1200 but not sure on 13xx*768
  15. Any model in particular to look for?
  16. I have two Dell Multimedia keyboards which had odd problems including some keys not working one second then mysteriously OK the next. Tried taking both of them apart and removing the rubber mat and discovered that there was a slightly oily residue over the areas of the affected keys. Wiping it clean fixed the problem
  17. Need to spec two devices, one for electronic signage in reception and another for use in one of the offices Been looking at a Samsung Syncmaster 460P but seems to have an odd native resolution which none of our computers delivers Any suggestions? Can spend anywhere up to 1800 on each
  18. Yeah, saw that post! Got two specced for our ICT room. Looking for something higher spec for the office peeps though, preferably of the nippy variety too...

    Wot switch?

Thanks for the suggestions chaps. Had a look at the 2626 and 2610, seems to be heading the 2610 direction at the mo as it doesn't seem to be much more. 2810 is definitely out of reach. Have an unexpectedly large surplus to dispose of in the course of looking at this but there's a bunch of other stuff to get too. Otherwise, re: setup, is it just web interface based? Any other tools required or anything to download from HP?

    Wot switch?

@Bendy The thought had occured but the unit is well out of warranty so it's a definite replacement job. @Diello Have been thinking about HPs but there are so many models it's a question of where to start looking! To start with, need a 24 port jobbie with a view to adding a second one later to split up computer distribution between them, and have some redundancy if one goes down. May be getting a fiber upgrade to the network next year, but at the least it would be nice to have some copper gigabit uplinks of some description. Seen trunked fiber on another site, can this be done with copper?

    Wot switch?

Looking to replace an old unmanaged switch which is developing a noisy fan. Never dealt with any managed switches before but looking to go this way with all of our units. Any recommendations for one which is easy to set up?
  22. Any recommendations for general office use? Been a while since I've looked into these. Got an old HP6300 which is decent enough if a tad slowish. Budget anywhere from 100-300+ each. Would be useful to scan straight to PDF, otherwise software recommendations for such would be helpful too. Cheers
  23. Sandisk Professional, Sandisk Enterprise, and Kingston DataTraveler Secure are the most common ones using 256bit hardware encryption. We've started using the Sandisk Enterprise ones, if only because I managed to find a batch of them which were cheaper than the others. Main differences according to the info I had at the time were that the Professional and DataTraveler ones lock out after 10 incorrect password attempts, after which you have to reformat them. Think you can also choose the protected partition size. The Enterprise one completely locks up after 10 attempts and is effectively useless. You can also buy server side software which lets you send a kill command to the device when it is lost and somebody plugs it into an internet enabled computer. When you plug it in it creates a virtual CD drive from which it runs the relevent software to unlock it. The rest of the space in the device is secured. If you find you cannot make the device work, it's most likely a registry problem. Sandisk have a list of keys to look at, though when I made all the relevent changes, it still wasn't doing anything so I had to rebuild one of our computers. On practical matters, also looks like the Kingston jobbie is slightly fatter than the Sandisk ones which could cause problems if you have a lot of USB devices plugged in. Not an issue with Sandisk. So far, no complaints about the Enterprise ones, and will get more when I find another cheap source for them.
  24. Monitor will be one of the standard VESA mount sizes, measure it with a ruler, looks like 10cm. Looks like a recess behind the where the six pairs of holes are, might be worth taking the desktop off to see if the holes in the back of the monitor line up. Might be a straight bolt-on job (placing the top of the monitor under the hook) in which case you don't need to buy anything other than screws that fit...
  25. Are your active directory transaction logs in the same partition as the database itself? If not, NTBackup cannot create a shadow copy unless you have specified additional files for backup in the partition where the log is located.
