Sadly from time to time this does happen, but it's much less of a problem than kids disconnecting the cables. Actually in our newer ICT suites I had the dado trunking deliberately put below table height so all the plugs and network sockets are under the table tucked out of the way. We still ocassionally get the odd cable un-plugged but not that frequently. Sadly for our new building because of some nonsense regulation of some sort, the dado trunking has to go at a certain height so it's back to the same problems we had before because all the sockets will be above desk height again, never mind. Unfortunitely not every one can choose to live within walking distance of where they work. I would love to have brought a house near to my work place, but Canterbury is a very expensive place, so I have no choise by to live out of town and travel to work. That's just the way it is and ocassionally the car does break down, not much you can do when that happens except to get public transport which invariably makes you late because it takes so much longer (20mins in the car to get to work, 1hr 10mins on public transport) Mike.

Your school presumably takes the students all the way from Year1 right up to year 11 then because most secondarys at the moment a Year11 student would have joined in 2006. This scinario is what the 'custom settings' section of the settings box will help resolve, except I've not written the code for that yet. I'm not even sure if I still have the source code for the project actually, as I lost a lot of data on my home PC a while back and I have a nasty feeling this program was one of the things I lost. If I can find the source code however I'll try and write the section to handle the custom settings, then you may be able to use the software. Mike.

I've not read the entire thread, but personally don't see what all the fuss is about. I flash my headlights to warn motorists of hazards ahead sometimes, it's almost a natural thing to do. What difference does it make if the motorists are slowed by his actions of warning them or by seeing the actual speed trap, the end result is still the same so I can't see where the problem lies.

WPA2-AES is better. TKIP is an old standard that is based on WEP and I believe has been recently cracked. A lot of new kit won't support TKIP soon. Mike.

Critical updates are automatically approved by our WSUS server, and rolled out automatically, forced to install on a Thursday. To avoid them hogging all our network bandwidth, The bandwidth settings in the updates section of group policy are set very low, so the updates trickle feed to our machines as they are downloaded by WSUS. Other updates are installed when we update our build images, unless there's a specific one we require to be installed in which case we'll manually approve it on WSUS. Mike.

We exclude temporary internet files from roaming, along with other selected directories to stop errors like this, and also speeds up profile loading a lot.

I use compatibles in our one, and have so far had no problems with then, and they are a lot cheaper. We have only had it for 6 months thou.

We buy licenses with ours to allow us to use XP pro on them, although you can't get these any more to my knowledge. If you have a schools agreement for your licensing thou, you should be covered to use windows XP Pro on them if you wanted to.

1.4 will struggle a bit, but should be fine. As a family, my dad has a 1.4 Vauxhall Astra in the 1990's which we used to go on holiday using. That's 4 of us, plus luggage plus trailer tent also stuffed with all sorts of other things hanging off the back. It was a bit sluggish on the hills, but it was perfectally fine overall. Make sure your engine is well serviced thou, as the additional strain will exaggerate any problems in particular change the oil if it's not been done for a while. Also I had no idea you had to do a course before you could tow anything. I've towed loads of things and passed my test in 1998, was blissfully un-aware I was breaking the law, whoops!

Has anyone else realised some of the other knock on effects of this. Both the standards picked to suceed contain some form of Digital Content Protection. Ok it is only optional, but how long until it becomes a standard feature or required to play certain content? Then you'll no longer be able to use simple splitters and the like to run additional displays as you please, the device outputting the signal will be able to dictate the number of screens the content can be output on, then you're in the grip of the manufacturers with having to purchase additional licenses to run additional screens etc. instead of simply being able to use a splitter like you can at the moment. It could get very messy, film makers encoding their discs so they can only be output on a single screen etc. etc. just a thought.

The number of times I've seen USB plugs jammmed into the RJ45 network port on a laptop, and I bet I'm not alone on that one. Some people just don't take 20 seconds to actually look at what they're doing. You could make the port bright pink with a big label 'TOP' on the plug, and someone would still plug it into the wrong hole or force it in the wrong way.

If I'm honest I'm not keen on the colour scheme as I find it hard to read white text on a black background. I do quite like the green, but think the rest of the colour scheme could do with a lift to make it look more modern, fresh and inviting. Look at any site selling this type of service, and they'll always be predominantly white background with good use of strong (normally primary) colours. There's a reason for this - because it works well and appeals. Just my opinion. Mike.

It is mildly annoying that we're being almost forced into having no choice in the matter in a relatively short space of time. Projector manufacturers better get their act in gear, as so many of them are still sold only supporting VGA, composite and S-video standards only, same with monitors, you still have to pay a premium to get anything other than VGA input on them, all the budget offerings only support VGA. Personally I've never found anything wrong with the VGA standard, still use it for everything. We are lucky thou, our new building will be full cabled to the latest standards, but I do pity schools with an extensive infrastructure who will have to upgrade all their AV equipment becuse they won't be able to get compatible machines to connect to them easily any more. Even schools built as recently as last year I've seen only cabled with VGA ports on the faceplates, so within 4-5 years it's all going to be effectively redundant, what a waste.

According to advice from our LEA (who give websense to schools as part of their broadband subscription) google safe search enforcement only works if you've not put any other customised rules in place for google. So if you've manually re-categorized and blocked certain sections of the google site, then apparently it changes the way websense addresses the site and the enforce safe search option doesn't work properly as a result.

We had 200 HP/Compaq tabelt PCs when I started where I am now, they were rubbish - only had a 800mhz CPU and 256mb ram and you couldn't upgrade them. Gave the 120 or so that still worked together with a boxful of spares to charity in the end, best thing I ever did. Even now 2 years on they still turn up at the back of cupboards every now and then. Best use I found for one however is mounting one on the wall of my kitchen to act as a media player reading music from my main PC, works very well for this purpose.
