double post - anyone else getting alot for forum lag?

Must be possible, not sure of the best way to go about it. Maybe use virtualisation and create the image from that? Windows will request the drivers it requires automatically, so it should just be a case of adding non standard ones to the image and ammending the oempnpdriverspath line in the .sif file. I also dimly remember something about changing registry entries to reflect this also, but don't quote me on that.

Am I right in thinking WDS doesn't throw a wobbly when you try to use an image made for a machine with a different HAL type? This is the main reason I didn't use RIS much. One day I'll just have one image that fits everything!
-
Not that I get the chance to use it much these days. Alot of our floppy drives have god knows what stuck in them (*tsk* don't you love some pupils attitude to IT kit), and theres little call to swap them out as they never get used. Can't say I miss them ;-).

I use a program called Badcopy by Jufsoft http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/ 'Tis pretty good...

Hi Wes, Just a thought (cause it tripped me up). The EUIT won't register credit remaining until a document has been sent to print from the logged account. It is during this 1st print job that the server is notified. Chances are you have it setup right, this is just the way its coded. Abit odd if you ask me... I asked Sean Lower @ Software Shelf about an .msi installer for the EUIT and it's something they're working on. However it's a moot point really as it can just be run from a network share/shortcut in the startup folder... Regards, Leon. EDIT: If it was me I'd reinstall the server with a new DB. Mind you we don't have a massive amount of printers... ;-)

Linitx is a great place for mini/embedded systems: http://www.linitx.com/ I've heard good things about Kiosk CD for libraries etc: http://www.kioskcd.com/

Until recently we were just using Smartfilter, until I learned about Censornet through this board. I still run the Smartfilter on a parent proxy, with the Censornet as a bridge. Best of both worlds. On its own the Smartfilter is easily bypassed. Pupils here were uploading cgi proxies to personal webspace. Smartfilter wouldn't categorise those addresses in a million years. Yay for Edugeek and Censornet!

Good stuff, everyones logged in this morning and the update has applied. @ Mark -are you worried about clients that have missed the update changing live data? Thanks Gents.
-
Seconded, the client seems to run ok if it doesn't get the update script -I've also just applied the Feb update. On the bright side, now I've got the GPOs applying synchronously (what? Of course I'd heard of that before now!) I won't have to run around like a blue arsed fly updating machines. Me 1 SIMS 0.
-
Nice one Ric, that's what I needed to hear. I'm pretty certain our machines don't run GPOs synchronously. *one quick Google later* Am I right in thinking I can turn on synchronous processing with: Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon/Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon ...? Guess it would be best to enable that on our admin machines? Cheers.

Afternoon all, this isn't actually a post on how to do it. I've managed to sort that with this very enlightening thread: http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2606 So thanks to the posters there. This is fast becoming my favourite place on the net... What I'm wondering now is what are the consequences of a user logging into SIMS from a shortcut to pulsar.exe (local), if their machine hasn't ran the startup/update script. Say for example from misapplied policy. You might ask why would the script not run if it's applied via a gpo. And there you'd probably have a very good point! Call me paranoid... Many thanks. Leon.

Cheers Geoff, I've allowed remote access via the web and also remote access via SSH in the firewall options. Still nothing though. How can I check the SSH server is running? Edit: I reinstalled Java just in case and the same thing happens if I try to SSH to it from Putty. Leon.

Afternoon All, Just got Censornet up and running on our network -very pleased with it. I makes our existing proxy look like a joke but I'm having trouble logging into CensorNet's CCT from the secure shell access of the browser config. The MindTerm Java applet returns: "Error connecting to 10.45.224.32, reason:->Server closed connection before sending identification" Anyone have any ideas on what I should check? Many thanks.

Thanks for your replies. I was mucking around this afternoon and came to the conclusion that it would be best to use the web gui, like you suggested Hodge. Once I've got it running smoothly, I'll be looking to import using a .csv when I need to add another year group. I couldn't get the NT import to work. I guess this is because we're not running our servers in native mode, for pre-2k support. I didn't want to open that can of worms, though I wonder why they couldn't implement this feature for AD? All the best.
-
Hi HodgeHi, You must have the patience of a saint ;-). You can only assign 30 users at a time, and you can't sort by group so you have to sift though the list with each imported OU. It's looking like I'll have to bite the bullet, or try DansGuardian... Thanks, Leon.
-
Thanks Chris, I can import the students by container. What I'd like to avoid is assigning them to groups in Censornet. Death by tickbox! Is it possbile to have Option 6 (Retrieve User-list from a Windows Active Directory) create/assign users to a group automatically during the import process? I've tried the NT method every which way, and it won't play nice. Any tips for getting this to work with a vanilla 2003 domain? I've tried making a computer object for the Censornet box, but it won't retieve the group lists. Cheers, Leon.

Morning all, Our school has been using a Netpilot box, which is totally ineffectual as it only supports URL filtering, so I've been playing around with Censornet... The user guide would have you believe it's possible to import users from AD by group, and have Censornet assign those users to a group of the same name. I'm running the most up to date version but I can't see this feature. I can import from AD but only by username. Am I forced to import an OU at a time and assign groups myself within Censornet? For authentication to work with our Netpilot, the groups had to live in the same container as the admin account used to authenticate. I would try this but when I specify a container other than 'Users' for the admin account it craps out. Theres a lack of good technical info, what with their forum being down. Any help would be much appreciated. Leon.

Hi, This could be the answer to your problems. It works great here and is free to use in an edu environment... http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html It runs as a service on the client pc, which makes adding a USB device independent of user privileges. You can also make it assign letters within a stated range, so it doesn't clash with mapped drives if a usb key is plugged in from boot. :-) Regards, Leon.

Afternoon all. Nice site! After 5 mins of snooping around I accidently found the answer to a long standing Sims problem. So I've made an account... I'm chief cook and bottle washer for a secondary oop north. Leon.
