Maybe get him answering the telephone a bit when staff call for help, get him to get as much information as possible, and then report the issues to you. This will then give him some helpdesk experience, and also make him think on what questions he needs to ask to get to the root of the problem.

with changing your proxy i managed to find a free download which installed an icon in IE and all you had to do was click on it. Cant remember what it was called though. but helped out with staff here when they keep taking there laptops home and having to disble the proxy.

thats the bit i am talking about! thank you scorpio! i remember seeing this on the client machines, and exactly how you have said these options are not turned on by default. you can force these options from a policy in the enterprise console.

I have not used it in a while as the last version slowed my machine down, but sounds like it has improved according to t_h and srochford.

Not had much experience configuring sophos but our network technician uses it here and you can force clients running the software to use specific settings using a policy, when they next connect contact the sophos server they pick up the settings and apply them, i think you can force the setting to delete the virus upon detection. not sure if this helps....

if you are worried about the virus spreading maybe try disabling ports on the firewall? I know we have 2 domains here and had a really bad virus outbreak a few years back and our network technician i believe blocked firewall access to stop it from spreading to the other domain. Not sure if you are running 2 domains, but just and idea if you are.

Please Someone correct me if i am wrong... But disabling the account is fine, thus stopping any user from logging onto the machine. But if it still connects or is connected to the network, via wireless / ethernet cable it will still spread the virus!

Have you tried looking in the log files to see if there maybe something in them?

If you think this maybe the case, then usually the manufacturer, has Hard drive diagnostic tools. i was going to say the same, if there in bios your fine other than that get your pen and paper and a pair of legs. Maybe try using a tool called open audit (completely open source) so its free , thats what our network technician uses, then whatever it misses out go round on foot and get the details.

The scale of a phishing attack originally thought to be directed at Hotmail may be larger than previously thought. BBC News has seen a list of more than 20,000 more names and passwords that have been posted online. The list contains e-mail addresses and passwords from Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, Gmail and other service providers. The list was published on the same website as the original list of 10,000 Hotmail login details. Some of the accounts appear to be old, unused or fake. However, BBC News has confirmed that many - including Gmail and Hotmail addresses - are genuine. Other addresses include Comcast and Earthlink accounts. It is not clear whether the list was part of the same phishing attack that collected the Hotmail addresses or a separate scam. Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing details such as bank account details or login names. A spokesperson for Microsoft said phishing was an "industry-wide problem". Can you see the Hard drive in the Bios? Have you checked in the Bios to make sure that the Hard drive is the first boot device?
