Thanks for the donation it is much appreciated. I will be having a full day of training before the jump, I don't have to do any tandems as two instructors will be jumping out alongside me just in case anything goes wrong, god forbid.

Thanks Pete, I'll try to enjoy it, I'll feel better when I'm back on solid ground. Andy

A big thank you to you both, I will keep you updated Andy

On Saturday 3rd of April 2010 I will be jumping out of a plane in an accelerated free fall from 10,000 feet in aid of Breast Cancer Care. This is not your normal tandem skydive, I will not be strapped to anyone else and will be jumping solo. I have never done anything like this before but I am willing to do anything to raise money for a good cause like Breast Cancer Care. I would like to raise as much money as possible and all donations are welcome no matter how small or large. Breast Cancer Care is here for anyone affected by breast cancer. They bring people together, provide information and support, and campaign for improved standards of care. They use their understanding of people's experience of breast cancer and our clinical expertise in everything they do. All of their services are free and it is your donations that makes this possible. If you would like to watch me jump I will update you all with the location and times once they are fully confirmed. You can donate by visiting my fund raising page at Andy Riach is fundraising for Breast Cancer Care - JustGiving Thanks in advance, Andy Riach Network Manager Brumby Engineering College http://www.justgiving.com/design/1/images/badges/justgiving_badge10.gif

I had a similar problem a while ago, something to do with the SID of the machines. Sophos provided me with two scripts to run which corrected our problem. Try running these on the affected machines - sophos-1.bat then sophos-2.bat Let me know how you get on Andy sophos-2.zip

I have actually tried a local user account not connected to the network in any way with no access to files, we do not use roaming profiles etc. I have watched this happen and today she was not even touching the laptop when it happened. Decided I need to go to the pub now and try again Monday I will update you on Monday Andy Riach Network Manager

Thanks for all your help everyone, as suggested I am going to try sitting her as far away from the computer as possible with a keyboard/mouse and see if that makes a difference. As far as I can work out it is her proximity to the PC that creates the effect - 'electromagnetic field' I think. After looking around the internet and reading the article posted on this thread it seems this is a genuine problem for some people across the world. I will keep you all updated once I know more, it's definitely created a talking point amongst the staff here. One more explanation might be the building work (BSF) on site at the moment, I did jokingly ask the building site manager if they had unearthed any ancient burial grounds! . . . I've heard sprits can be evil Andy Riach Network Manager

I have check all the logs possible, there is no indication of what causes the shutdown, the longest time she has managed is about 45 minutes but the average is 5-10 minutes. Andy Riach Network Manager

I have took all of this on-board and I am dealing with this in conjunction with my vice-principal, she will make the phone call and discuss the issue with her parents. I understand the situation this could create amongst her fellow students. Andy Riach Network Manager

I have just spoken to her and apparently just before she left primary school it started happening there however she says her home PC does not shutdown. I think she may have a stronger magnetic field than most of us - the only explanation i can think of. I am going to give her parents a call to see if she has an effect on any electronic equipment! Andy Riach Network Manager PS. Thanks for the link chrbb, at least I know I'm not going mad and it does happen to others!!!

Pupils have their own profiles, I have tried a standalone pc with local login and the same thing happens. I let her use my pc for 5 minutes logged on as myself and the same happened, I have also tried her with a static wrist band to no avail. Alien implant is becoming more believable. This was on a laptop this time! I give up!!!! Andy Riach Network Manager

I setup a brand new laptop this morning and logged on as the student, the laptop DID NOT shutdown. I logged it off and have pulled the student out of her lesson to use this laptop in my office, within 5 minutes of her logging in and using the laptop it shutdown. Both my technician and myself watched everything she was doing, no power keys, usb sticks or anything. This is getting stranger by the second. I might take your advice kmount and call Ghost Busters!!! Andy Riach Network Manager

Students cannot run commands and even if they found a way they wouldn't be able to run them remotely due to permissions.

The computers are shutting down correctly not losing power. I have tried all of the above and watched these students carefully, no memory sticks or students turning off the power buttons. I am going to try removing them from their next ICT lesson and have them work in my office away from the class environment and see if the same happens. Still confused though!!!
